Is there any reason why they threw out the 13th Doctor's final episode and regeneration on a random weekend in October? I had no idea this was even on until I saw this thread suddenly come back to life.

The episode was commissioned as part of the BBC's 100th anniversary - hence a lot of the fan service, I imagine. I think ending up as Whittaker's final episode was coincidental.

I didn't watch the episode while it aired. But I did go on Twitter last night and saw one name trending...

Spoiler

Matt Smith

Which gave me a very misleading expectation about what would happen in the episode or teaser trailer!

I'm actually a little bit disappointed that didn't happen. I'd like to see RTD writing for that actor.

The special itself was, I thought, one of the better episodes that Chibnall has written during his run. It was heavily reliant on fanservice for that, of course, but at least it wasn't a big boring blob of nothing like the Sea Devils one.

So annoyed with myself that I sat through that dreck, incredibly pissed off with Chibnall swiping material from Dennis Fucking Potter's last interview in the Doctor's final scene. It's like he watched Day of The Doctor and attempted to cargo cult an episode from it. The only redeeming part of the entire thing was Ace using the Hand of Omega-charged baseball bat, and that's because I am of A Certain Age.

Still, I won't lie, seeing Tenant going "I know these teeth!" has already got me counting down for the return of RTD…

Given how much of a car crash RTDs later episodes with Tennant were, I’m not overly excited for both of their returns.

Chibnall was absolutely riffing on RTDs worst excesses in that finale. I hope he can turn the dial down from 11 when he takes the reigns again.

The Disney Plus news ain’t great for those of us outside the UK; since its inception it’s been shown in Australia on the national broadcaster, the ABC (also where a bunch of the missing eps and clips were found), no payment required. This deal will, sadly, put it behind a paywall.

I suspect the iplayer team is going to see some big spikes in VPN access when new eps hit as well…

Yeah there is a good chance I just won't bother watching if it is no longer on ABC.

No need to do that to yourself. I don't have a Disney sub and never will and have never missed an ep of any star wars show and won't miss any Dr Who shows either.

It is more my appetite for the show once it is off ABC.  I actually have disney at the moment.

Never really watched Doctor Who, only the 2005 series, but the parts I’ve seen since always looked a bit 90s-CBBC-drama, so this news is very welcome tbh.

After enjoying House of the Dragon recently I reckon Matt Smith would make a good Doctor. They might be able to afford someone like him with the extra cash I guess?

yeah, I reckon he’d be really good. I’d have him wearing a fez.

Bloody hell, so much to talk about here, and fortunately, not all of it is bad!!

The fan service was tremendous.  Ace was always my favourite companion as a kid and she was just awesome in this.  It speaks volumes just how much better, charismatic and cool she is compared to the consistently dull Yaz.

Spoiler

The scene at the end with the old companions was probably my favourite thing Chibnall has done - such a lovely scene.

I actually thought the regeneration scene was one of the best for a while too - beautiful location and a genuine WTF moment when it wasn't Ncuti Gatwa at the end (I hadn't a clue it was going to be DT - was on holiday last week and managed to avoid any spoilers too.  Added to the fan service!)

The negatives were the usual mix of too much happening at once making the whole plot feel confusing at times, and yet again the very poor use of the 'main' companions.  Yaz (and also Dan) are not characters that anyone will look back on with any nostalgia.  They're just so beige.

As for Jodie - I feel more and more sorry for her every time a new episode airs, and never moreso than here, when the very ending is set up to almost retcon her entire era!

I think it's quite telling that so much of this was fan service, when pretty much the entire first season of the Chibnall era was specifically and deliberately the complete opposite.  It's like the show has had to come full circle to win some viewers back - nods to previous eras of the show was the correct thing to do, and for this reason (and the fact we don't have to put up with any more Chibnall nonsense) means I'm actually looking forward to the show returning.
