Doctor Who

That was the most epic piece of fanwank I've ever seen and I loved it. Some surprising appearances I hadn't heard leaked. I'll miss this Master. He's been excellent.

Hopfully the first special will air on New Years like usual. I can't wait.

Yeah, was actually touched by that. Wasn't expecting that.

That was dreadful. But it’s over now. We never have to think about the timeless child ever again.

God I hope not. Needs to be confined to the "let's never refer to that again" vault

The Rasputin bit should have been a story on its own. What a waste of a class idea.

Spoiler

Did the Rasputin disguise have a purpose in the story? I mean, besides allowing Chibnall to claim he watched The King's Man for research.

I enjoyed it as a TV movie (mostly due to the classic references), though it did feel that the old Doctors were overshadowing Jodie Whittaker's departure in places.

That was shit from start to finish. So the whole last season with Yaz falling in love with the doctor was what.... Just queer baiting?

And the ex assistants circle jerk was insulting. "I'm Graham I fix volcanos in my spare time now and I knew the doctor once, sorry Ryan couldn't make it because he was the wrong sort".

Quick, here's some fan wank to take your eyes off the stupidity.

There's a little girl in a box that's a giant pasta monster that has mystical plot abilities for reasons that the master controls with an iPhone 6, look out doctor for regeneration again reasons because the plot needs it. Sorry what train, no train here we've all moved on you dullards.

Run over here, new tardis, hah hahahaha reasons di ex machina post it notes with words on, pull that leaver, ignore that plot hole, ex assistant wank.. Shiny lights, keep moving, she's fine

Absolute bollocks.

Well, the actual story was a load of hyperactive bollocks, to the point where I genuinely couldn't tell you what was going on for most of it. It wasn't that it was hard to follow as such, it was just bollocks.

However,

Spoiler

all the fan service stuff was a genuine surprise, Teagan and Ace aside, and led to some neat little moments. They were all completely gratuitous, but nice all the same. It said a lot that Teagan and Ace probably got more development in the episode than any of the new companions.

On the subject of surprises, I really enjoyed going into a regeneration not knowing who I was going to see next. I knew about Tennant being in the specials of course, and assumed Whittaker would regenerate into him, but we also know Tennant isn't the "Fourteenth Doctor" so maybe his return would be handled some other way. But no, here we are. :)

About that regeneration. It annoyed me a bit that Whittaker somehow regenerated her clothes, especially seeing as her earlier forced regeneration did no such thing a little earlier. Maybe there's an explanation for that, but I doubt it. That aside though, I thought the regeneration was handled surprisingly well. It was quite restrained by new Who standards, but looked pretty great and had just the right amount of emotional weight behind it. Fair play.

Anyway, this era is finally over and I can't wait to see what RTD can do next. :D

It was absolute bollocks, but as soon as soft lad survived a bullet to the face in deep space I disengaged my brain and went ooh at all the nice colours and people I remember from long ago.

Probably the best episode he’s written, but that’s hardly a compliment.

Arguably the best episode of the Chibnall-era, though I appreciate that's a bit like me cleaning up the garden after my dog and deciding which one of his turds I like the most.

Seriously though, some of it was very well done and there was a nice bit of weight to the regeneration scene, which benefitted hugely from not being the overblown bollocks we've come to expect from New Who regenerations. Some of the cameos really made me smile, though the fan service was laid on a bit too thick even for me, and I'm the kind of person who thinks Ghostbusters Afterlife is a really great movie (seriously, I do, I love that film!).

Spoiler

I mean, seriously, how many people watching would've got that "The Master's Dalek Plan" gag?

But yeah, overall, I liked it. Bit shit we have to wait until November next year for more.

Spoiler

Not to mention having to wait until Christmas 2023 before we see Ncuti Gatwa in the role.

I took

the clothes and David Tennant apperance to be something to do with 'reversing' the regenerations... so she's reversed stuff literally.  Still has her clothes and her next regeneration skips a whole bunch back to the conveniently most popular one for ratings reasons.  There'll be some

GALAXY DESTROYING REASON that if the Doctor Continues regenerating backwards, everything in time, the space between time and the space between the spaces between time will be wiped out from all existence and only by pointing a sonic and a wobbly thing and shouting ALLONS-Y can it be driven forwards again...

Apparently...

Spoiler

Tennant is officially the 14th Doctor. His clothes being very slightly different is meant to clue you in on this not being the 10th again. Ncuti Gatwa will officially be the 15th Doctor.

Actually, we know for certain he IS. RTD has specifically said so, and Ncuti is the 15th.

Yeah we know that now. I didn't know that going into the episode though, which made it more exciting.

Spoiler

I don't think Tennant was officially announced as Fourteen until after the special. Gatwa was certainly widely reported as the Fourteenth Doctor when he was announced:

He might be a master of evil. But he's shit at photoshop.

Also the earing kept disappearing and reappearing from scene to scene.

The thing is, as great a master as he was, he was playing the joker all the way through it. Missy was such a better evil nemesis because she wasn't constantly chewing the scenery. She had gravatas not just insanity.

Is there any reason why they threw out the 13th Doctor's final episode and regeneration on a random weekend in October? I had no idea this was even on until I saw this thread suddenly come back to life.

Watched it today and, well, I guess if you're going to go out as showrunner then that's one way to do it. Completely insane of course ("unleash the volcanoes!") and stuffed full of fanservice but somewhat despite myself I thoroughly enjoyed it. I want a spin-off series with Graham and Ace. The companions' support group at the end was a lovely touch.

As with many here, the Chibnall era hasn't really been to my tastes but I've been a Who fan long enough to know that just comes with the territory and there's always something else just around the corner. When I look back on the last few years I'd like to remember the good stuff:

- Sacha Dhawan was, for me, the best Master of the modern era (Missy fans are allowed to disagree)

- Graham and Dan were decent companions

- The historicals (Rosa, Punjab, Tesla) were generally very good

- At least half of Flux was great, and the Weeping Angels episode was excellent

- Karvanista!

- Fugitive of the Judoon was a hell of a moment, even if the whole Timeless Child thing turned out to be bollocks

- We got an actual surprise regeneration for the first time in forever

- Jodie Whittaker did her absolute level best with often quite poor material, and one day I hope she gets a Colin Baker-style shot at doing the role properly with Big Finish

Looking forward to what comes next. If there's one thing I want from the RTD era though it's that they manage to produce a series every year again - the lengthy and somewhat random gaps between series or even episodes does the show no favours. November 2023 is a long time away.

I thought that was the point. Maybe a nod to the recent real-life Jesus restoration fuck-up. But it was done to get attention. Poorly done was actually better.

Did it destroy continuity though? I've no idea because I wasn't paying that much attention to it. I don't have any piercings, but I'm fairly sure you can take them out if you want though.

There's bad photoshoping and then there's just lazy 5 minutes of work. It almost looked like they'd run out of ideas and just printed a big picture and stuck the change directly onto the film. OK it's a bit picky, but by this point I'd just lost all patience with the whole thing.

As for the earing, it was changing from one shot to the next, that's all I could think about.
