Nciti was absolutely superb in Sex Education - he just has great quality - I think he's lost on Doctor Who though, its been crap since Baker left.

The fact that he’s black is just the BBC ticking off the next box on their checklist. To hear he’s a great actor, however, is brilliant news and this is the most excited I’ve been about the show since Smith left.

Are you this guy?

Surprised that the announcement came out of nowhere, instead of being hyped up in advance like the last few. Matt Smith's casting was announced in a Dr Who Confidential episode; Capaldi in a special TV episode; Whittaker as part of the broadcast of the men's Wimbledon final.

I've seen people on Twitter speculating that this was originally going to be announced at the BAFTA TV awards tonight, but the BBC announced it early to pre-empt a leak?

I don’t know why they don’t just do it as a surprise reveal when the doctor regenerates, seeing as the new actor’s first appearance tends to be one line six months before they start filing their own series. Plenty of others shows and movies manage to keep stuff under wraps.

Not quite like this. Most surprises are, well, a complete surprise. All a showrunner has to do is stop the existence of the surprise from leaking. When it comes to a new Doctor, everyone knows it's going to happen and what it means, so everyone's trying to find out. The only comparable thing I can think of is James Bond.

They couldn't keep it under wraps until the regeneration because they're about to start filming on the 60th anniversary special very soon. That's well before the next episode airs and people would spot the new guy filming on location.

Apart from tediously predictable little wanks like Darren Grimes, I've genuinely not seen much outrage about the fact that we are going to have our first black / gay / refugee Doctor. Which is obviously fantastic. It definitely doesn't seem to have angered people as much as Jodie Whittaker's casting did. Is this progress?

I remember all the fuss around RTD's "gay agenda" back when Who first rebooted - a huge fuss about nothing when really all he was doing was normalising the inclusion of gay characters as part of a diverse cast. Even though that predated social media and the country's army of weaponised gammons, it still managed to cause quite a stir. "Not suitable for a children's programme" and all that kind of nonsense. Nowadays that all seems very quaint - the kind of thing RTD was trying to do back then has become absolutely normal in UK drama to the point where it would seem odd if it didn't happen. To the extent where even Doctor Who itself can float the idea of a gay relationship between the Doctor and Yaz and everyone pretty much shrugs (while moaning about the shit writing).

I can't wait to see what he does second time around, I have no doubt he'll be trying to push things as far as he can again and I am absolutely here for it.

I'm so interested to see how he does. Would never have guessed the choice but was so good in Sex Education. RTD said he was the last to audition and he just knocked it out of the park! Interesting to see how he handles the darker moments.

I think it will be great.

Saw this announced last night and I think it's great news. He's the most consistent actor in Sex Education. I've not watched Doctor who weekly for years (I found the last two doctors rather patchy) but I'm back on a Saturday night for this. Sounds like it could be a lot of fun, especially with the involvement of Davies.

Great casting has absolutely shown he can turn on a dime (if i knew what one was) in terms of emotion and delivery he was a bit one note in the first series of sex ed but has completely shown what he can do since then.

He is an outstanding actor, I was really excited to see where his career was going after Sex Education. He stands out on that show which is full of brilliant performances, can't wait to see his take.

Look at her she's amazing.

I have no issues with Dr 10 and Donna turning up for the 60th.  I mean it's 60 yrs of a British low budget sci fi show.  That's pretty awesome imo.  Who else is coming back though.  It ain't just those two.

That would be amazing. Not holding my breath for obvious reasons (it won't change the outcome).

Now that the Morbius Doctors are sort-of-canon, we might even see Graeme Harper (the TV director) make a brief appearance as a former Doctor (still not holding my breath).

Spoiler

There are also rumours that Peter Capaldi has been filming Dr Who in the past few months, even though he's previously said he won't return.

Donna is annoying as shit but it'll be fun to see Tennant again. A great big crowd-pleaser of an episode to bring the audience back seems like a good way to kick off RTD's return.

Donna was a great companion.  I thought she'd be too much after her first appearance but she had such superb chemistry with Tennant and she was an excellent character.  I think she toned it down considerably when she became the full time companion.  Her performance in Turn Left was fantastic.

Absolutely MILES better than any of the cardboard companions poor Jodie has had to work with.
