Doctor Who

I enjoyed the episode for the way it took all the stuff that tends to appear in series finales, and stuck it in the opening instead. Some things about it I didn't care for (the Doctor knows he's dying again!), but the hand mines, Missy, and the Doctor-as-Doof Warrior made up for it.

But I'm going to focus on a little nit-pick:

There was that line where Missy compares Clara's relationship to the Doctor to the dog being walked around by a couple.

Why were those people even walking past that close (apparently oblivious to the frozen aircraft)? Given the lack of anyone else at all, I assumed that UNIT had cordoned off the whole plaza being covered by their snipers.

If this odd detail had happened in the first episode of the 2010 series (Moffat and Matt Smith's first), right now I'd be speculating that it might be Significant, like the duck pond and the date on Rory's ID badge. But I'm not, because it's now five years later and we've learned that Moffat isn't quite as perfect a writer as we hoped then.

I liked it. So far. I think it is unfair to start complaining about the story structure when we are only halfway through the story.

I tend not to be a fan of this type of ret con in general - the Doctor is there in Davros's childhood! - but the central conceit here is enough to run with it and see how it pans out. The "Doctor is dying!" is a distraction. It's not really the Doctor is dying, he's simply afraid and it is much more about the moral quandary set up at the start.

I don't think Clara or Missy were ever dead; they both had Vortex Manipulators on and Missy has already faked out one disintegration. You can nit pick over the woman with the dog or the tank but they aren't what will determine if this is a good two parter. That'll be down to where this goes next week.

Things moved a little slow, and the tank bit felt like padding. But that was always the problem with two parters. First episode is intrigue and slow, second is jam packed. But everyone wanted more two parters. I think 8 60 minutes would be better.

But we had all that with Smith very recently. Why do we need it again so quickly? There's no excuse for a shit 2 parter plenty of shows in the past and present manage to make them good no reason for Doctor Who with it's short seasons to suffer.

Why not? Moffat very clearly wanted to revisit the question posed in Genesis and so off he went. If it covers similar themes to some previous eps then so be it, as long as it works. There'll be more episodes that cover different stuff. Most of which probably covered in the series history somewhere.

For whatever reason New Who has a number of two parties that are too slow in the first and too fast on the second - those pitched right are much rarer. Other shows might manage it more regularly but they tend to be continuous and less open ended that Who.

I don't know how this one will play out. So far it has been all set up - the intrigue is enough for me at this point, but I'm looking for pay off next week. The Master is the curious thing for me here, since surely Missy must have some significant role.

Now, my nitpick is that the Doctor was on Skaro for Asylum so I'm not sure why its existence is a shock. I know Moffat just thinks keeping it lined up is impossible so ruck it, but he could at least keep his bit straight.

Oh and there are obvious series threads here too - does anyone think that confession dial isn't in the finale?
