Doctor Who

I decided tonight to start watching the Capaldi run after the praise for his take on The Doctor, having initially not intending to watch post-Smith. I've just finished Time Heist and whilst personally I don't think he's had the best stories to work with so far, he's been pretty great; a good mix of grumpy, sarcastic, inquisitive and funny. There have been some nice little moments between him and Clara, too (and I liked her little monologue at the end of Listen).

Consider me converted to the Church of Capaldi.

I've now watched the remaining 3 episodes and am up to date. Capaldi is still great, Clara has had some nice character moments and whilst I actually don't mind Danny, I'm glad he hasn't had much focus and become a companion.

So what do people think the 'big mystery' is? Coleman, when talking about whether or not she'll be back next year, said that they were building to something and to say whether she was back or not would change things.

There was this interesting comment section on Reddit on this, which was worth thinking about.

There was the idea of Clara dying. Which fits with the prominent Nethersphere this season and the higher tension and risk with Clara's relationship with the Doctor. It fits with the "am I a good man?" thing with this Twelfth Doctor, when Clara meets all the people that died around him. There's of course also the soldier theme running through this season. It could end up being pretty interesting in how the Doctor and Danny might try to get possibly Clara back.

Yeah, it was addressed in The Name of the Doctor.

The ending of which still hasn't been satisfactorily resolved as far as I'm concerned. One minute Clara's sacrificing herself, scattering herself through the Doctor's timeline to save him, the next (i.e. the beginning of the next episode) she's out again (as is he) and it's never mentioned again.

I don't know why this bothers me so much.

They were actually meant to address it at the end of Name of the Doctor (The Doctor was going to carry Clara out of the time stream) but apparently Matt Smith had a knee injury so the scene was impossible to shoot.

Couldn't agree more. I should probably go back and watch what 'Day of' again, as I was distracted throughout by the lack of the explanation.

Me too! And the same for the Christmas one (Time Of?)

The knee injury explanation makes it even more infuriating: they know it's a loose end. Perhaps it will be an extra on the DVD version.

Speaking of which, when are we getting any more DVDs? I think we're at least a couple of years behind with DVD releases now. Have they just stopped?

Interesting.

After watching Deep Breath, I thought:

That Clara might be Missy, but I'm not entirely sure that would work on a number of levels. But I did wonder if the underlying arc might be related in some way to Clara getting out/being forced out of the Doctor's timestream, thus allowing her to exit the series (if that's happening) and avoiding her never been seen again when she does leave. For what it's worth, I've always quite liked her character - rewatching 'Day of the Doctor' again (I've seen it a few times now), I actually resent Amy's appearance somewhat, as I feel it undermines Clara's relationship with the Doctor - which is odd when you think about it, given that the 11th Doctor was very flirty and, as we learn in Deep Breath, thought of being Clara's boyfriend.

Also, the soldier theme is mainly about soldiers who will no longer fight, I thought (Danny, the Doctor and the toy soldier without a gun).

Missy seems to be collecting people/beings who sacrifice themselves or put themselves in the way of danger selflessly. Not just people who die I mean.

That's just made me think that Clara, or different versions of Clara could be filling up the Nethersphere. After all, she selflessly sacrificed herself for the doctor many, many times... Planet of the Claras?

One thing I've noticed (and apologies if it's already been mentioned elsewhere on this thread) is how almost every episode this season has had someone who travels/does something with The Doctor, almost as if they are a companion, but at the end they don't hang around for whatever reason.

Has this just constantly been the case and I've not been awake enough to notice it, or is it intentional?

Really? The last set we've got is series 6 (Impossible Astronaut etc) and I didn't think any more had been released since then. So we're missing series 7 plus Day & Time of the Doctor. To Amazon!

Edit: and that's all three ordered. :D

If you're after the Blu-Rays there's a special edition set you can get containing Name, Day and Time of the Doctor along with An Adventure In Space and Time, which I believe is the only way to get that on Blu-Ray right now.

More importantly, that set is the only way you can buy The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot!
