Doctor Who

What always winds up being such a shame for the Pertwee era is that the Doctor was made into the straight action hero. Not that the character can't work like that but when you see Pertwee in a far more humorous story such as The Time Warrior or especially in The Curse of Peladon, you can see how funny he could be in a performance.

And yes, the Daemons is shit. Especially when compared to the heights Pertwee's run on the show could get such as Inferno or Day of the Daleks.

The action hero stuff ended up being quite fitting, considering Pertwee's former life:

I quite like that Pertwee's Doctor is a bit of an arrogant dick, mocking nearly everyone for their relative idiocy is certainly more entertaining than constantly fawning over how brilliant humanity are. I'm also a fan of the extra-terrestrial non-UNIT stories of his final season, which rarely seem to get mentioned.

He spends most of his time belittling Jo and eating tiny sandwich triangles. Sometimes mid "action":

Oh yes, that's always been the case. I don't really call myself a Dr Who fan, as I only like about 20% of it.

Of course it did have a pretty spectacular purple patch from 1974 to 1981...

This strikes me as a really odd thing to say given your username and your number of posts in this thread relative to everyone else.

God, now it sounds like I'm having a go, when it's not my intent,

I love it for just the reasons Ulala describes. Sometimes the story is good, sometimes the production values are good, sometimes the acting is good. The charm and talent of the lead keep you going while waiting for the rare occasions that all three coincide.

Yeah, this is absolutely spot on. It's all about the eponymous lead.

Winds me right up when a lot of my sci-fi obsessed friends start (negatively) comparing it to BSG or similar, or when they start obsessing about canon/continuity a la Star Trek. It's a totally unique show and *probably* has more in common with general Saturday night television than science fiction. Save for the odd story, naturally.

No, that's understandable. But my username isn't a Dr Who fan thing, it's just something a mate said when he was stoned once.

I did get a massive pang of nostalgia for the show in the mid 90's and basically bought all the VHS's and a few (factual) books. And I loved the action figures a few years ago. But I haven't got any of that stuff any more, and only about 4 DVDs. So I have been/am a fan in that sense, and in the sense that I know a lot about the show and have seen 99% of the episodes, but even back in the 90's I'd buy one and go "Well that was shit". My missus likes the classic show, and has been recording it on the Horror Channel, but if she asks me if I want to watch one I usually can't be bothered as I've seen them all. Except City of Death which I watched most of the other night. I love the show as a whole, but individually they're more miss than hit. I'm certainly not into the expanded universe stuff, and I mostly loathe the new stuff since Tennant. Haven't even watched Capaldi yet.

I suppose I go through phases. I'm in a phase of not being bothered at the moment.

I watched the Robin Hood one yesterday, and thought it was pretty good. I think because the plot felt like it had some kind of structure to it, and progressed in an (internally) logical way. Plus Capaldi was really good. I like that he's quieter in certain scenes, holding back where the previous two doctors would have been leaping around and gurning.
