Doctor Who

[Picture: I'm guessing this episode had a larger budget than most, or they simply used it more efficiently. Admittedly, the sets are somewhat barren, but all the creatures and CGI must have cost a bit.]

I'm fairly sure I remember reading recently (in fact I think it was here) that RTD had big issues with the season long format and blew lots of the budget early on/with this episode which led to production troubles down the line...

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/01/09/steven-moffat-promises-unbroken-runs-of-doctor-who-for-both-this-year-and-next/

Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, which I don’t have to hand but has been quoted across more or less the entire UK online press this evening, Steven Moffat has stated that both this year and next year will see unbroken, “traditional” runs of Doctor Who.

Here’s the oft repeated quote:

We’re not going to do splits [in series eight], and the same format will repeat exactly the following year like that – so it will be the traditional form.

Of course, the “unbroken” bit doesn’t mean there won’t be Christmas specials. Or, you know, if they had some other special they wanted to stick on the calendar somewhere. Perhaps. Maybe.

Elsewhere in the same interview, Moffat apparently says that this year’s unbroken run kicks off “in the summer.”

Filming continues on the first production block for this year’s episodes. It really can’t be long until the BBC toss out an official image of Peter Capaldi‘s new costume.

Thank fuck for that.

It's a scene from The Chase in which they end up in some American film set or something. It's one of the worst classic Who stories IMO, very silly.

Although if you go back in time and all you have is a Target novelisation it's the best thing ever. Target books make even the Dinosaur Invasion good :)

The Unquiet Dead

(Blog has pictures)

In the tradition of the original Doctor Who series, a science-fiction episode is followed by a historical one. (Thankfully, this is not a tediously dull four-part serial where the Tardis gets stolen or trapped.) It's 1869, it's Cardiff, and the Doctor and Rose meet Charles Dickens on a trip from London. Remarkably, that's not the most memorable aspect of their trip. Gaseous ghosts are inhabiting the bodies of the recently deceased, and they either need to be helped... or stopped.

[Picture: Granny's feeling a bit blue.]

Even when I first watched this, the idea of aliens reanimating dead bodies was hardly a new idea, although I confess it reminded me most of a terrible episode of Star Trek: TNG. 'The Unquiet Dead' mixes some horror tropes with some quirky characters and actually manages to pull off a surprisingly decent episode. Such is the nature of this new format that the story is a tad rushed. I would have liked to have learned more about the Gelth. Turning from blue to red to signify their evilness is terribly clichéd, too. And just how trusting and/or daft is the Doctor to believe them in the first place? Side note: the Time War is mentioned again and is made out to have been a devastating galactic conflict (rather than some Dalek ships attacking Gallifrey). This is also the first mention of the "big bad wolf". Foreshadowing done right.

[Picture: Hey, look, it's Gwen(eth)!]

As Rose is still new to this time-travelling lark, the story has a sense of wonder and mystery about it that later episodes will sadly lose. Even the very notion of being here in this time and place, stepping out onto hundred-year-old fresh snow, is such a big deal. Time travel should be a big deal - that excitement has been lost somewhat lately. It's also nice to see Rose is a reasonably realistic portrayal of a person, asking the right questions and objecting to the bizarre solutions the Doctor conjures up. And it's only their third story together, but they seem to have become fast friends, holding hands while facing down death.

[Picture: The Doctor gets some great lines (and puns) with Dickens.]

This has been a nicely varied and refreshing bunch of episodes so far. I'd forgotten just how much the tone and pacing of "NuWho" had changed even after just eight years. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but these episodes are straight-forward, standalone, no-nonsense fun with a good sense of humour. A shame it's about to get worse...

You inspired me to re watch these and I watched End of the World last night - pretty sure Bad Wolf was mentioned by one of the other guests in a background conversation at one point when we flicked back to them. Something like - 'This is a Bad Wolf situation'

I think I might watch Torchwood this time. I only ever saw the pilot episode when it first aired and thought it was utter dogshit, but since I'm doing this marathon thing now, it seems appropriate to give it another chance.

EDIT: And SJA too, I guess.

Most of Torchwood is dogshit but some of it's enjoyable. Honestly people who enjoy recent episodes of Doctor Who have no excuse whatsoever for not liking Torchwood, they're about equal on the dogshit scale.

The Children of Earth miniseries has some genuinely good stuff in it (particularly all of Capaldi's scenes).

See, most of Torchwood is a bit shit, but it's so GOOD when it's good - like the episodes where the dickhead character becomes a not-dickhead, and... err... Tosh. She's fit. And Asian. There's a dinosaur in it too for some reason. Err... Children of Earth!

Torchwood is mostly rubbish for the first season, dipping to astonishing lows with Cyberwoman, but I remember it having a couple of decent episodes. Season 2 is better, and Children of Earth is somehow superb. It's best to just forget about Miracle Day.

Torchwood needs to be endured if only to see the greatness that is Children of Earth at the end. It's a shame they didn't do any more after that but it was a good high to end on.

Don't dare to argue with me fuckers.

For those who listen to the big finish audio plays, that nice man Jim Mortimore (original musician for AV and later BF) has just put up on media firewhat was Big FInish's precursor Audio Visuals. After a shaky start (I've not listened to them mind), apparantly they improve no end. Space wail (the first) is admitted to be a bit naff but this was a pilot and was them learning what they could and couldn't do. After the third or fourth (I forget which) Nick Briggs (yes, him) takes over as the Doctor. Worth a listen if only for historical value as without av there could well not have been Big Finish. These were released on cassette back in the day for about £1.75 each.

It only ever had the odd good episode, and even those generally weren't followed up right. (e.g. Billis Manager was fucking creepy...but never explained...)

The people out of time episode and the Risen Mitten eps in S1 were surprisingly good though.

S2 - I generally thought it was all terrible.

CoE - still can't believe the same people made this. Utterly brilliant (some notable exceptions).

MD - still can't believe ANYONE made this. It's just terrible. Bad characters, story, motivation, logic...it's just a stupid nonsensical mess that's not even slightly entertaining...
