Doctor Who

That's Marco Polo out of the way then. I found the purely historical story kind of refreshing, and I wouldn't mind seeing a modern take on the format at some point. if only as a one off. The sets and costumes looked really good too, so I guess the budget went much further when they didn't have to design and build an alien planet.

I was really impressed with the Loose Cannon reconstruction too. I was planning to skip the missing stuff as I couldn't imagine sitting through the likes of a seven episode long set of slides, but thanks to the audio, the timing and choice of the slides and the novelty of colour it really worked. The story itself was a bit too long mind, and could have been compressed quite a lot without losing anything, but over a few days it was entertaining enough.

Back to the future for the next one!

Yeah, most of the Loose Cannon recons are really well done. It's sort of like an audio book but better rather than a TV show but worse, if you get me.

I rewatched the 50th special. Not much to add, but I enjoyed it more the second time. I could actually hear what Tom Baker said this time, rather than being drowned out by the cheers in the cinema. I also caught a few little tidbits that I liked, such as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart mentioning the UNIT archives, saying 1970s or 80s "depending on the dating convention". That plus the Doctor talking about lying about his age were nice continuity patches. Unnecessary but cool.

I also completely overlooked the fact that somebody was obviously doing an impression of William Hartnell's voice for his appearance on the screen. Any idea who that was? It was very convincing.

The Light At The End had some equally convincing impressions of the first three Doctors, which was a nice surprise. I think there were some more little easter eggs in the special too. Having just re-watched The Daleks, "I do not understand his words!" stood out as a rather nice touch. :)

Back to the classic series, I've just finished watching The Keys Of Marinus. After stretched out Marco Polo this was a pretty big shift, with almost every episode being a mostly self-contained story within the quest arc. It was like a compressed Key To Time season in that regard. Also while The Doctor buggers off for two episodes for no good reason, he gets to have a bit more fun with the character when he's around. Before this serial he's often been more of a hindrance than a hero, but here he starts to show the spark of the character the Doctor would become. His stint as a detective/attorney was rather good fun. :) The aliens at either end of the serial were a bit rubbish, but you can't have it all.

So, my son comes out of school, and he keeps saying "estimate, estimate", and I'm there thinking its something they learned in maths...

then i asked him why he kept saying it.

"its what they say in doctor who, father"

[edit]

and I video'd it, duh!

Oh, the thing that bothered me most in the 50th thing is... at the end of the last season, when the Doctor comes face to face with John Hurt on that planet of his death... well, what happened? Next thing we know, he's nowhere near the planet or john hurt. Did I miss something?

I was also confused by this. I presumed they wanted the 50th to stand alone so people who hadn't seen the previous episode could follow it, and so I'm hoping the Christmas episode will fill in the gaps.

It was in his mind, wasn't it? Clara realises the Doctor has a shady past that he doesn't talk about, and the Doctor sort of says "yeah, I don't talk about him" and then presumably they bugger off back into the real world / present day.

What's to miss?

Perhaps it's just me being dense and/or pedantic but how would they just bugger off back into the real world?

AIUI the Great Intelligence went into the Doctor's timeline to muck his whole life up. So Clara followed him in to fix everything. And the Doctor followed Clara. So they were "inside" his timeline (whatever that means). I must admit I was expecting this to be the set up for the 50th which would allow them to hop from one event to another in the Doctor's history and undo the GI's meddling (like Back to the Future 2 with old Doctor Who clips). When this wasn't the case I was a bit surprised, although not at all disappointed. I loved the 50th, but I was still confused how they got out.

It seems very un-Moffat-like to set it up as a kind of cliff-hanger in this way and then ignore it, so I'm hoping he will join the dots later. Even if it's only as a mini episode on the DVD.

I think the idea is that when you jump into someone's timeline, the "now" you exists at all points in their life. So Clara doesn't go back to the day Hartnell hopped in the Tardis and then live a full life following the Doctor around everywhere. She's just always there around the corner. Once it's all resolved and they leave the Doctor's timeline via the special timeline door or whatever reset button they use, everyone's just back where they started, a moment after they all jumped in, but with everything magically mended. Free to go off and have more adventures.

They just left his time line and went home

It's obviously just me then. I'm really surprised that after all the build up to getting into the timeline, we're just left to figure that they got out "somehow".

Wasnt a cliffhanger

Perhaps they shouldn't have the Doctor wanking on about what a massive sacrifice and how terrible it is for someone go into the glowy thing if resolution to going into said glowy thing is 'they got back out between episodes lol'.
