Doctor Who

Incredible television. I gave up after 2 episodes of the last series and this made me remember what a fucking amazing show it is. What a way to introduce my girlfriend to Doctor Who! We're now starting from the Matt Smith era going through the main good episodes.... the opener, the Angels two-parter, then Amelia's Choice first up.

I watched The Five(ish) Doctors today. Very good! I agree with the suggestion that Peter Davison would make a good sitcom director.

He talks about it here. That was Jon Culshaw doing the bit with Tom Baker on the phone! I'd assumed it was edited archive audio clips...

But the announced list of features on the DVD/BR release of the special suggest it won't be included. :(

Watched it with my kids and they enjoyed bits of it. They're 5 and 3 so all they want to see is monsters and explosions. They liked the Zygons and they like the two Doctors talking with their 'Granddad'.

Got a bit bored towards the end, but they were smiling like loons when old Dr Baker appeared. :)

Amazing how they can accept as an alien the Dr can change faces, but then be talking to each other!

Ah, I thought that Gallifrey's destruction was the start of the whole 'Who' thing - didn't realise this was a 'recent' thing.

That being the case then, how did the Doctors that pre-date Hurt know to surround the planet at the end? (I'd assumed that Hurt, when returning to his own time had started the idea off for all subsequent doctors).

Probably not as complicated as I'd imagined...

It wasn't made explicit but seeing as how Bad Wolf Rose /The Moment could bring both the Tennant Doctor and the Smith Doctor to the point where Hurt's War Doctor had to make the decision, it's fair to assume that they also managed to contact the previous Doctors as well and arrange for them to work in unison.

The frequency of new episodes in comparison with the RTD era is pretty rubbish. Somehow he always got them done, despite the utter chaos he outlined in The Writer's Tale book (scripts written very late, etc.). I don't know why Moffat seems incapable of giving us 13 episodes a year these days. He managed it in Season 5. I have no doubt that it's a complicated show to make, but big US shows manage it easily.

I just assumed they used their time machines to go back in time and tell them.

It's hard to shake the suspicion that Moffat is more invested in Sherlock than he is in Doctor Who.

I love them both, but surely the BBC could have engineered a situation where two of their biggest shows weren't being run by the same man at the same time?

I think that there is probably more going on than we know. Moffat is probably worse at it than RTD bit I wonder of the BBC isn't messing about too.
