Doctor Who

They should make them all two parters. 45 minutes isn't nearly long enough to have any meaningful characterisation or scene setting, and it also means that the new series largely lacks one of Doctor Who's most iconic elements - the cliffhanger ending.

A lot of the two-parters they've brought out have been pretty shitty, though. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood and Rebel Flesh/Almost People two-parters were pretty awful and felt like stories that could've been done in a single episode, stretched too far.

I thought Rebel Flesh/Almost People was great, for the record. Much better two docs than Gaiman's recent one.

In other news, I found a Tom cover Radio Times after a bit of searching Sheffield. We've a surfeit of Troughton and Matt's with a sprinkling of Hartnell's so took some rummage.

EDIT - Interestingly, cover photo of Tom appears to be new. Are Davison, Baker and McCoy also new shots? Like they did for McGann before he appeared in a 50th show...?

I'm not a huge geek on doctor but I watch every episode and follow this thread and I have absolutely no idea what happened in the last episode. I thought it might be because I forgot but now I realise I just had no idea at all.

I did like the stuff with clara and the link to the first episode though. Hopefully saturday's show will be super fun and make sense all at the same time.

The Radio Times, in what seems like an attempt to save money, have mostly used photos they've already used on covers and anniversary issues. Hence Docs 1 and 2 are actually from The Three Doctors and 4,5,6 and 7 are all from execrable Children In Need charity minisode Dimensions In Time. Most of the monster pics seem to be from the tenth and twentieth anniversary special issues and are of exhibits from the old Blackpool and Longleat exhibitions.

Amazingly, the TV Times has actually made the effort and used proper photos for their four covers.

Don't forget to watch The Curse of Fatal Death. :)

Thanks for this, I probably would have overlooked it. Again, I think I saw this in 1999 but I'd forgotten it and probably wouldn't have got some of those references at the time anyway.

It's pretty funny. I mean, it's got fart jokes, but when Rowan Atkinson does fart jokes, they're funny.

I also liked the Bill and Ted-esque "I anticipated this and went back even further to put the trapdoor under you" stuff. And the couch! And the Dalek "bumps"!

Worth 20 minutes of my time. :)

Same here, I can't really explain anything that goes on in Doctor Who these days, it's impossibly convoluted. Doctor Who is so self-contradictory and random at this point you can't take it seriously.

I hope they stick to the 13th rule and then end the show, then just reboot it 5 years later and start completely from scratch without any baggage.

Speaking of two-parters, I finished watching Ecclestone's run again yesterday and remembered how well the last two episodes worked as a surprise two parter. I know it was spoiled in the preview, but the Dalek reveal is amazing. The Master's reveal in Utopia is similarly great, although the episodes that followed were no Parting Of The Ways. That was really the only time RTD managed to nail a season finalé, feeling epic without going overboard.

Why are people getting confused at the plots? Sure they have great big gaping plot holes but apart from stuff they don't bother to clarify (Like who blew up the Tardis) everything is pretty clear. If anything the resolutions to major plots tend to be pretty basic as far as sci-fi goes.

After watching the The Ultimate Guide documentary (surprisingly good by the way!), it certainly sounds like there's more to come from the Silence.

Anyway, new webisode time. For some reason you have to "purchase" it for £0.00, so I guess I can't embed it, but here it is:

It's nothing mindblowing like the last one, but it is a nice little teaser.

I think it's because there is too much detail in terms of the lore and about the central characters and tenets, rather than about the specific stories. I get bored with it and lose track.

Watching Blink now, which was on BBC3 on Sunday. It's utterly fantastic.

Nah. The Cybermen have been shit for years and years, but their early appearance s are still great.

I enjoyed the season 5 two parter anyway, even if it did take liberties. Someone will come up with another good story sometime in any case. It's a great hook.

They're not confusing, they're just full of holes and non sequiturs.
