Doctor Who

So, so nice to see McGann get his moment in the spotlight. He's been such a staunch supporter of Who over the years and has done some sterling work on the audios. He's as much a proper Doctor as any of the others, and finally he's got his regeneration scene.

Also - the fact he's aged actually added to it, for once, which was nice.

Also nice the regen effect was a bit different from the standard one, almost like a cross between the old and new.

Yep. :D Hoping they're using it as a bridge, and the next one will be totally different.

Watching it again - god, it's brilliant. Paul goes through a whole spectrum of emotions and mannerisms and is never anything less than The Doctor.

I always felt bad for McGann, he was sort of the "forgotten" doctor. This was a nice way for the fans to get to know him a bit better, as well as my wee lad. He is fascinated by regeneration so he was cock-a-hoop to see one and he was gripped by the story.

Funny how kids don't seem to question there being a different actor, he just accepted it was the Doctor. He has only really known 11.

Genuine question then: anyone know the best way to approach the 8th Doctor Big Finish audios?

I listened to a couple of them years ago (Storm Warning and one or two subsequent ones) and thought they were great. I'd like to give them a proper go. But the BF site itself is confusing as hell, they seem to have loads of different shows and series and all I'd really like to do is listen to them in order. Anyone know what the best way to tackle these might be?

Yeah, as well as the main range there was a seperate Eight Doctor line kicked off by BBC Radio asking Big Finish for some new stories. The first two BF seasons are probably the best to start off with, which it sounds like is where you started before. They were part of the monthly main range and began with Storm Warning, Sword Of Orion, Stones Of Venice and Minuet In Hell for the first season and the second runs from Invaders From Mars to Neverland.

I just happen to have decided to relisten to all my Eight audios, so was figuring this out myself, if you want to do them chronologically then it goes...

Main range 129 (Company Of Friends)

Main range 153-155

Main range 20 (Storm Warning) and all the Eight Doctor stories up to 103 (The Girl Who Never Was)

Eighth Doctor Adventures seasons 1-4

The surprise of the minisode was marvellous and a joy, of course, but I have problems with the actual content:

The Doctor being so easily persuaded by the Sisterhood to abandon his principles and become the War Doctor. Sure, the entire thing was only 8 minutes long and so the storytelling needed to be quick, but I didn't think for a moment that there was enough 'there' to make him make that decision at all. Plus, the opening lady was a pretty shitty actress (at least until the scene with the doors). And I don't believe The Doctor would have stayed on the ship to die either, given that he was right next to the TARDIS.

I think it's gotten a bit of a free pass because of what it is. I enjoyed it, but the writing wasn't all that.

That was a pretty boneheaded

death, even by the Doctor's standards. And that's even when compared to getting shanked by some teenage gangbangers, or sticking his hand in some mysterious goo. At least he didn't whine like a bitch and go on a massively self-indulgent and sappy tour of the multiverse.

Sprite!

Don't watch Night of the Doctor* until you've watched the TV movie. It's perfect timing. Timey wimey!

*unless you've already watched NotD of course

Right, watched the TV movie and followed it by this mini-sode! What a serendipitous bit of timing! Really strange to immediately watch the same actor after a 17-year gap, but that was really well done. The BBC kept that under wraps well - nobody had a clue this was happening, did they?

I'll probably watch them both again before doing a write-up.

There was a vague rumor a few months back that McGann had recorded a scene in the 50th but nothing concrete at all. Gives me some small hope that Moffat convinced Eccles to film a quick 30 second regen. Just him standing there saying "Fantastic" would cover it :)

I really doubt that Ecclescake will be in the anniversary special. It's almost as if the J. Hurt Doctor's a 9th Doctor replacement for the purposes of the special, to get the Doctor count up to three, or something.

Although... Seeing as we've been surprised yesterday, who knows what will happen? Perhaps the Hurt Doctor will be shown regenerating into a non-Ecclescake Doctor, or to the P. Capaldi Doctor, anything's possible.

The war had been going on for some time before the webisode, so I don't think the decision was made for that reason alone.

I thought that the Sisters merely enabled the decision, and as he was dying the Doctor just thought "fuck it". The hero Gotham needs and all that. Based on Cas' reaction the war had clearly taken its toll, and he had the chance to do something about it.

the other one is capaldi, surely?

Well yes, but I wasn't talking about that. I bolded the bit about him wanting ALL the regenerations on film. ;)

As some people are suggesting, maybe Moffat is doing the ol' bait and switch again, saying the Capaldi regen is going to be at Christmas, but really doing it in the 50th instead. Same with how Clara was supposed to debut in the Christmas special last year, but actually appeared in Asylum of the Daleks. It would be a total mind-fook if Hurt regenerated into Capaldi, and the Christmas special could be about Smith and Capaldi trying to sort that out.

On a side note, I'm hoping the appearance of the older McGann Doctor will help convince some of the casual viewers that an older Doctor is just what we need now.

That was pretty wonderful. I've been filling the dry season with eighth doctor audio. Some of them ('Invaders from Mars' for instance) are great and give the tv series a run for its money. I've really been enjoying Paul McGann's doctor with his snappy delivery. It was lovely to see him on screen looking exactly right too.
