Doctor Who

Not sure what I thought of that, there were individual moments that I liked but I didn't think it hung together that well and on the whole it was incredibly masturbatory.

McGann still getting dicked over, couldn't they just have had someone in his costume like they did with Colin Baker's Doctor at the start, if rights to the TV Movie footage were an issue. Speaking of which, not sure why all the others warranted proper looks and Colin only got a stand-in wearing his coat and a wig for the second time in the show's history.

Maybe they're both personally appearing next ep ;)

Well, that was distinctly OK-ish.

One thing that puzzles me though. Why did Clara only meet 11 Doctors? I would have thought that RichE Grant would have tried to destroy every iteration of The Doctor in the timeline, not just the ones up to that point.

I guess that whilst Grant was in the timeline it meant the timeline would effectively end at that point, as the Doctor was doomed to an eternity of writhing around on the floor in that exact spot. Possibly.

Personally thought it was a bit rubbish. Not massively rubbish, but underwhelming and slight. Clara's reveal wasnt anything exciting, the Doctor was impotent in the face of danger and the only thing of any interest to me was the whisper men who were basically the silence meet the bad guys out of Franklin.

Far less clever than it wanted to be, thought it was or could have been. Very sad. To think we were all cheering from the rooftops once that Moffat was in charge.

The emotional impact of Silence in the Library is pretty much ruined with the idea that River will not only be back, but live for quite a while by the sounds of things. Is the biggest thing that bothers me.

Clara telling the first Doctor which TARDIS to steal was the neatest moment, I'd say.

Intro was more rushed then I'd expected, would have been cooler to see how she might have saved earlier generations, even if off-screen. Rather then shouting 'doctor can you hear me' and such.

Totally baffled by John Hurt.

IS IT NOVEMBER YET?

One thing I found particularly irritating was when they were all standing around at the end (or lying on the floor in the Doctor's case) telling Clara not to enter the spinny-light thingy, whilst hundreds of billions of people across time and space were dying and it was obvious to everyone that the only way to stop them all from dying was for Clara to jump into the spinny-light thingy and save the Doctors from Withnail. Why weren't they all bellowing at her to stop wasting time with crappy one-liners and just get the fuck in there?

Because sending a girl to her death is sad?

She's hardly a soldier nor trained to be, you know.

But yes, you could say it was slow padding regardless.

That was lovely. :)

So, very little substance, but thematically cool and with lots of geekery. Anyone spot what episodes all the clips were from? Was that footage of Patrick Troughton running wearing the big fur coat? I didn't recognise the episode. Fail. :(

I think the promise that The Doctor was talking about was that by calling himself The Doctor he made it fairly explicit to the universe that he would be going around trying to fix things, and that John Whurt changes his name to something else when he decides to take the path of destruction, thus breaking the implied promise of his previous name.

Upon rewatch I think I can say that this, along with Hide, is probably the best ep for me this series. Big improvement upon The Wedding of River Song with a much more satisfying ending and some great dramatic bits thrown in between. For me it's best thing Moffat's written since The Impossible Astronaut / Day of the Moon and easily his best episode for this season.

And I'm not even talking about the last 3 minutes to be honest...oh my.

For whomever wrote River still can come back: the scene before the Doctor steps into his timestream is very clearly to be taken as a goodbye not just to this version of River but a goodbye from the Doctor to River. The next time he'll meet her is probably their date in Last Night, a short mini-episode that's included on the series 6 Blu-Ray. Them saying goodbye certainly felt like a set-up for that and certainly as a goodbye moment for River from the show.

But doesn't her grave imply she had further adventures beyond The Library? (and how is she appearing there in the first place in ghost form or whatever it is, I think it was explained but I didn't understand) Or are we to assume it's simply a tombstone.

Not been putting spoiler tags since, well, those that haven't watched yet are hardly going to be viewing the thread until they do, surely?

Edit: River had also made it seem she knew many many doctors and has so, so many adventures. Granted a younger River could be playing alongside The Doctor in the future, but I'd also assumed that if they were to do the 'Last Night' (haven't seen, trying to find on youtube-y) some Doctor far in the future would be referencing doing the 'going to the concert' thing. Poor show to have made Eleven do it. (though haven't seen to judge)
