Doctor Who

I thought this episode was decent enough, but it still feels sort of like the Doctor and Clara are intruding on other people's stories, rather than them being the focus. It's like each episode is a Doctor Who TV movie aimed at people new to the show who just want an adventure without much character depth. Clara hasn't had to go through the motions of becoming accustomed to travel with the Doctor - two stories in and she's already acting like she's been around forever. Which isn't Jenna Louise Coleman's fault, and maybe it's because it's so far into the season they don't want to do that kind of character introduction, especially since she's already been introduced twice before. There's something missing. I feel alienated.

Maybe she's just not a very good actress. In the bits where she was supposed to be terrified in the last episode she looked like she was barely suppressing a grin and was still talking in the same ’gosh this is such a lark' cadence. Has anyone seen her in other stuff to compare?

I can kinda see peoples criticism of Clara, hotness aside she's just not as interesting as Amy Pond was when she first came along (remember all the faces she used to pull in the background when the doctor went off on one? Brilliant) or as funny as Catherine Tate. Hopefully they will do something interesting with her

Not sure that's true. Last week we had "I don't speak Russian" this week the "We're just ghosts to you". She's just not outwardly freaked out. It seems a deliberate decision, do you really want to see the same character arc again?

Plus Amy was one of the stronger companions.

That pretty much sums it up for me. It had such a strong, scary start, then the door knocked and I just knew I was going to be annoyed when the Doctor waltzes in and starts prattling and touching stuff.

I think for the best Doctor episodes, he's not the hero. He's not the focus. He's the outsider. He's the catalyst to move along someone else's story. Not some dick who wanders in and takes over everything.

THIS. If I had my way every* Who episode would start with the Tardis landing somewhere and the companion being all like "where are we". That's something RTD got right, and so did Moffat in his Tennant/Eccleston episodes. It should be a journey of discovery. Nowadays the Doc always seems to know what's going on in advance.

I liked it.

I liked it all except for the ending. It felt rushed and weirdly edited, and the bombastic music during dialogue was too much (again). I liked the 'creature', and the idea of a

love story

, but it needed more than the last 30 seconds to get that across properly.

If the Tardis could go into the

pocket universe (or back into it), why did he need the wormhole open again? Why would the Doctor put Clara in control of the Tardis again while he risked jumping through on a rope? And, slightly nitpicky, if time in the pocket universe is moving slowly, why wasn't it thousands of years later when they came back out?

I liked the Planet of the Spiders reference. :)

YES! Although he pronounced Metebelis weirdly, the big weirdo.

Has NuWho done these sort of references regularly, or am I only noticing them now?

----

More importantly though, when is Sprite going to start in on the Tom Baker years!?

As of this morning. :)

I really enjoyed this episode again. These last two have been the first in ages that I've wanted to go back and re-watch. When Matt Smith is good he's untouchable.

But did I miss some explanation? At one point they say the Tardis can't travel to the pocket universe due to quantum entanglement rhubab rhubarb batteries run down. But then they travel there twice. Was that explained?

Yep, pretty much, there have been a fair few. Cloister Bells being one of the big ones (and we heard them again on Saturday!)

I figured it was hitching a ride on the wormhole, don't think it went in when it wasn't open?

I'm interested in why the Tardis doesn't like Clara and also why she was willing to fly solo. The Tardis doesn't have much of a history of that and I was surprised it passed without comment from the Doctor.
