Doctor Who

That was really good. :) Loved what they did with the Ice Warrior, enjoyed the smaller scale of the episode. Well played.

Next week's trailer looked awfully generic. "She's here..."

EDIT: As an aside, I really hate the way the trailer is shoved under your face the moment the episode finishes. I wish they'd stop doing that.

Going to be the lone voice in the wilderness and say that while the concept was interesting, the execution was dull, listless, frequently naff and just plain trying too hard. Again with the emotional speeches to defeat the villain, and an utterly unconvincing threat from the Dr to destroy the sub and his new GF to save the world. Just felt very very average, and I wonder how much of the love here is a mix of relief that this wasn't as risible as last week, combined with a tickle of nostalgic fan service? Just asking.

It was a decent episode but I agree that they had a good cast wasted on it. Had it been a bunch of unknowns I'd have been happy enough with it, you need an average episode to define average ...but David fucking Warner!!! What a bloody waste!

I didn't think much of it really. Did anyone else think it was rather disjointed? There was a weird edit between the scene with the Tardis dematerialising and Cara waking up. I couldn't quite follow what had actually happened there. And generally it felt sketchy, especially the way they shot (or didn't shoot) the Ice Warrior getting his suit back.

Yeah, bit of an odd episode. Uninvolving. Still better than last week, I guess.

Also thought it was a bit meh. Wanted to like it but the premise seemed... Uninterestjng, like we'd done that dance already. I liked aspects of it though but to say it was in the same realm as Dalek isn't anywhere near the truth (IMO).

How many eps this half series? Its done very little for me so far :(

I don't think anyone here considers it in the same league as Dalek, but when compared to other introductions of older villains, Cold War certainly beats Rise of the Cybermen, The Sontaran Strategem, etc. The only other episode which reintroduced an old villian in a proper way was Utopia. But even that got ruined by The Sound of Drums / Last of the Timelords.

Ack!! Those words. Half.Series :(

Lazy fuckers should do a 13 episode run in one go. Shit shit shit shit!

As regards the episode this week? Not too bad actually.

You know the professor who likes Ultravox and Duran Duran? That's exactly the character and class of acting I want for the Doctor himself! He was maybe a little old, but he convinced me.

Also, someone mentioned earlier that this episode was frightening. Really? The cast never gave the impression that they were particularly scared, and Clara didn't sell the horror of the 'dismantled' body at all. This wasn't helped by the fact that the worst you saw the Ice warrior actually do was stroke their heads a bit, which looked very cheap to me. "Right, we've got these gloves, but no monster suit...".

I didn't even like Matt Smith much in this. He just didn't seem all that bothered and the script had him do the usual thing - wave the magic wand about a bit, and do a speech at the baddie. Annoying.

Yeah, this was my issue with it too. There doesn't seem to be any sort of threat any more in Doctor Who, no-one important ever seems to be in real danger and they all just saunter through each episode like they're having a tremendous time. I never got that impression in Eccleston's era or in most of Tennant's run so I'm wondering if it's a Moffat thing. Maybe it's because once you've rebooted the whole universe and brought a companion back from the dead half a dozen times there's nowhere left to go? Or maybe it's just that we know no-one's in danger because any regeneration or change of assistant is heralded months in advance. Dunno.

The lack of threat in New Who is one of my biggest gripes. I know the show is never going back to the good old days, but in the classic series the Doctor would frequently be fucked. About to drown, be shot by firing squad, decapitated, arms and legs pulled off, hit by a train, you name it. And although you knew the Doctor would be back to fight another day, it was properly sold to the audience as serious peril, with a week to wait until you find out if he survives or not.

I really miss that.

So he was never in real peril, but you thought he might me?

Think the difference here might be your age?

New Who has done tension well lots of times. The Angels have been generally effective in this regard, the first use of the Silence put Amy in fairly tense situations, the one with the Dreamlord. That's just Moffat and off the top of my head.

I caught the last one about a third through and thought it was ok. But when i rewatched from the start I thought it was a lot stronger. End could have been better but it was definitely one of the better eps.
