Is there any advantage in acquiring all six of the "cell" parts before evolving? I keep getting prompted to "grow legs" but I've still got two pieces to find...

Don't think so, none of the Cell parts are much use later on. You do get a 'badge' for doing it though.

It determines which basic creature parts you get in Creature mode.

I spent the afternoon pootling with the Creature stage. Managed to cross off some achievements, including the Flight of the Bumblebee one, which I'm chuffed about. I've got no idea how you kill an Epic, though. I thought maybe a team of Rogue creatures might be able to finish it off, but an Epic Flamenco killed one of my mates while an Epic Guardgoyle landed on top of the other. That was a mental moment, hearing the sinister music, then looking up and seeing the thing flying over us. All the Epics were my own creations - I don't know whether that was a coincidence, but I thought it was a nice touch - a sort of "You're only doing this to yourself".

I've been trying to collect all the creature parts in case it unlocks another achievement. I've only got a couple left to find, but it looks like you can't collect carnivore or omnivore mouths if you're a herbivore, so I might not be able to do it.

I love that your Spore page displays what other people are doing with your creations. I guess there's something about my Blit race that makes people want to Epic them.

Edit:

I've just discovered the game keeps an animated record of everything you design in the game, including every evolution! Check in the AnimatedAvatars folder in My Spore Creations - it's all there.

There's also an Easter Egg on the main title screen, that should be familiar to anyone who found the one in the Creature Creator . . .

Try spinning the galaxy really fast.

I love this game. How can you not love a game that has an Aphex Twin reference in it?

I really wanna get this, but for some reason £26 seems a bit steep for a PC game. I'm probably gonna wait, but then again I get paid next week, so I'll probably order it in a fit of spending madness.

I'll keep you guys posted!

Nah.

I'm finding far too often that i'm left a little bemused as to what to do (and occasionally bugged so i can't continue immediately.

Cell stage was over in a flash, creature stage was a little more fun after i learned how to do the whole social thing (it's kind of like top trumps but with them always picking) tribal stage was a bit of a doddle and civ stage just involved getting an efficient city and churning out units until you'd won.

Space stage is a bit more fun though.

Socialising in Creature's a bit baffling. I mean, I know what to do and I know how to do it, but it doesn't always work. Even with maxed out social stats sometimes the meter doesn't fill all the way up. One baby creature would just give up on socialising after a couple successful interactions.

I can't figure it out either. Took me ages to complete the creature stage.

After the most primative-looking creatures I find the easiest nests to convert belong to to the orange angry face creatures who'll attack you if you hang around for too long. You have to convert one more than usual, but their stats are geared toward attacking, so you'll outclass them in singing, charm and so on. It's also easier to socialise with creatures who don't have as many hitpoints as you. Inside a nest, babies are the easiest to convert, and alphas are the hardest, but alphas give you body parts if you convert them, so it's a trade-off.

its installing... i am really anticipating this one

how long did it take fr you guys?

The installation took a while at the beginning and really chugged while installing the support files but after that finished the rest of it was rather quick.

Would there be any problems playing with a standard MacBook? I'm a complete technophobe when it comes to these sorts of things - haven't played a PC game since the Sims, ironically enough - but I'd like to give this game a go...

My mate is happily playing it on his '08 base MacBook. If you've got the GMA X3100 onboard gfx you're fine. i've heard it even works on GMA 950s, too.
