Meteos - Famitsu Like.

Not saying a great deal, but they really have been taken with it, saying it has a bit more substance than your common or garden puzzler 9, 9, 10, 10 - Dendo Platinum. You might get me playing my DS on the train yet.

I've watched all those videos but i have no idea what's going on in that game. Still my most wanted DS game though because i love the puzzle games.

I suggest we drop the Lumines comparision as that'll soon turn this thread into a PSP vs DS war again. Even if Meteos is th king! I always thought that Mizuguchi was more of a producer on this one. Is he just hogging the credit Miyamoto style.

Yeah, he's more of a producer bloke on both titles, but I'd be surprised if he didn't have a lot of input into it.

Apparently Meteos was Mizuguchi's idea, but then the Kirby dude introduced the whole rocket and weight aspect of the game, which pushes the game to another level, or something.

I've been reading quite a lot of articles about Mizuguchi after falling in love with Lumines, and this has been my most wanted DS game for quite a while. There's a video interview with him at www.kikizo.com, and he goes on about how he thought the PSP and DS were both great consoles in their own right and how he wanted to make specific games taking advantage of each one's strengths, rather than make one game to be ported to multiple consoles.

Lumines is a PSP game through and through; I don't think it would be as good an experience on the PS2. Likewise, Meteos with its stylus block shifting (basically you can move any block anywhere on a vertical line) looks to be a DS-only experience.

Meteos in action looks a lot better than the screenshots, I must say. Also liked the avant garde piano music too.

I like how Mizuguchi seems to have produced two of the must have titles on the new handhelds. What a god.

Now, I know it's all about how it plays, but doesn't it just look woefully unfinished to anyone else? Those graphics are sub pc-shareware titles from the mid nineties.

I must admit that it is surprising to see how relatively under-developed the graphics look for a game that has been in production for a significant amount of time. The images below are some of which I consider to be especially sub-par:

ss_gelgel.gifss_byuboom.gif

____________Gel Gel______________________________Byu Boom

ss_sabon.gifss_faulte.gif

____________Sabon_______________________________Faulte

You can see all the hallmarks in these shots, I feel, of the "cheap shareware"-ish look of the game: somewhat generic posterized backgrounds; customizable block designs; modernistic, plain organization of on-screen artifacts and furniture... It's difficult to look at screenshots like the one for Gel Gel and not be slightly disappointed by the lack of "wow" factor in the game. Of course, people will say that the graphics were made simple on purpose so that the single-card multiplayer mode might not be hampered, but Chu Chu Rocket! on the GBA, (for example) which had the same feature, certainly looked somewhat more sophisticated, graphics-wise --in my opinion. It's probably because of the overall plainness of the (intentional) graphic design of the game that makes it somewhat unappealing --much like Rez or Lumines, in my view.

Which is not to say that the game doesn't look interesting. On the contrary, there are some intriguing ideas on display in Meteos, but every puzzle game needs some panache, I feel, to convey its ideas to the audience to the fullest degree. This doesn't necessarily mean that it must have hyper-realistic or super-stylish graphics, but enough so that it becomes a contributing part of the design and not the weakest part of the chain.

teh pr0n?

Close enough.

Also liked the avant garde piano music too.

I don't think the music belongs in the avant-garde department as much as, say, Cecil Taylor's work, (it's still somewhat tonal) but each to his or her own opinion, I guess....

I know the screenshots look crap, but have you seen any of the videos of the game in motion?

I mean, are you actually going to have time to admire the aesthetics of the game when fuckloads of blocks are constantly raining down?

My DS is recharging and having a break after around six hours of constant play (by various people - one of whom is buying a DS to play it on his way home tonight) Tetris now has a daddy, simple as that. Importers - go for your lives - bit of hiragana/katakana (menus) and the story centres around you destroying the titular Meteos- a big eye. Plays like a cross between Tetris, Space Invaders and Star Fox. Oh, and if you hadn't guessed -it's bloody brilliant. Really bloody brilliant.

Having some Japanese ability helps - but the story isn't anything you'll lose sleep over( trust me) and you can basically get going right off the bat. If you have any real trouble - PM me and I'll translate what you need (shouldn't be necessary, mind)

Are the menus easy to navigate? I mean Chokkan Hitofude had one of the strangest menu systems I've seen and because it was all in a japanese I didn't have clue what I was doing for a while.

I deleted an 80+ completed game by mistake 'cause of the menu. Boy was I pissed, took much longer to get back to that point than it did originally as well! :(

Is it as easy as Wario Ware to navigate?

I mean i figured that out pretty easy and i don't give a toss about the story. Just knowing what the options are.

I really must buy this now.

Anyone know the release date in the west for this?

After chokkan, I might wait a bit if possible.

I haven't even found the marathon mode in chokkan yet. (That's the one with 1000 puzzles).

I've found the 100 intial puzzles and the tetris mode, but the larger challenge mode which edge talks about, I haven't found at all. Anyone know where it is?

I think Meteos is due sometime in April in the US. I might wait for it. As for Chokkan Hitofude, that's the first I've heard of a marathon mode. Are you sure that edge aren't calling the tetris-style-endless-falling-blocks mode the marathon mode?

In terms of menus, there are a few - but if you were o.k with WW, you'll be fine here. As for the game, everything is so clearly presented and thoughtfully done that a five year old would probably take a minute to pick it up - import away. My DS has finished charging....'Star Trip' mode - soooo good.
