Yeah, Robocop makes Batman Begins look like Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was gritty as buggery.

I see his point though. There was something very OTT about that film, and I'm not just talking about ED -209.

We'll have to see how it pans out.

I don't agree. I think it had a typically Verhoeven slick, glossy feel to it, with only a few dark and gritty scenes (well, gritty for 80s, at least) - Murphy's death, for instance. It kind of reflected the corporate world it was satirising.

Exactly. A number of the events in the film are dark but visually it is surprisingly bright.

exactly

"Murphy, transfering in from Metro South"

"Nice precinct"

Yeah, pretty good."

"You work for a living down here."

Delta city idealism vs the Detroit slums reality

the shoot-out at the closed-down steel works was a statement about the loss of us manufacturing to cheaper foreign labour, for sure.

"they'll fix you, they fix everything"

This is still very much a non-news story but it could be the first sign that Aronofsky will NOT be making this film:

In June it was reported that Darren Aronofsky was shopping around a project titled Black Swan with Natalie Portman signed on to star as a veteran ballerina who finds herself “locked in to a competitive showdown with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance.” But it isn’t as simple as that — the big twist is that Portman’s character is not sure whether her rival is a supernatural apparition or if she is having delusions.

And what does this mean for the Aronofsky-helmed Robocop remake/reimagining? If Black Swan went into production this Fall, Robocop could ramp up production in mid 2010, which is enough time to make the 2011 release date. But thats pushing things. Aronofsky usually likes to take his time in the development phase, which I think most people would agree, pays off in the final product.

And THR is reporting that MGM has put out feelers for other directors in case the timing doesn’t work out. I have a feeling that Aronofsky won’t end up making Robocop after all. And without Aronofsky behind the camera, I’m not sure I really care to see a new Robocop movie.

One of my favourite films ever, watched the bluray last week and it's still as awesome as ever. My sister and I used to watch this every weekend when we were younger, for something like a year. It was 75p to hire it out from the dodgy van that came around the area and we eventually wore the tape out. It's also the film we watched a short time ago the night before her wedding, most girls would pick a rom com but my sister prefers 80's action films as that's what we grew up together watching

Who remembers the 3pm ITV edit ? :hat:

The one I always remember is the bathroom scene - "once I even called him... airhead". :(

It's a sad indictment of our society that by removing a few swear words, such ultra-violent movies RoboCop and Aliens were deemed appropriate for a pre-watershed evening.

What on earth actually went through the heads of ITV when they aired that shredded POS - AFTER 10pm.

Not a single fuck? or even shit or pisshead. On a robocop, after a 10 o clock??

I never understood. It's not like swearing wasn't allowed after the watershed!

Having always watched it on my dad's Sky (from the age of 5!) I was a bit taken aback when they started going on about how they'd "shove this stuff so far up your nose you'll be sneezing snow for a week!", at 1am, on ITV, aged 22.

Reboot Canned.

Robocop, the forthcoming Darren Aronofsky-helmed reboot, has apparently been taken offline permanently having been crippled by MGM's fiscal fiasco.

According a report by The Financial Times, The Wrestler director has walked away from the Robocop reboot due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM, which is reportedly on the brink of bankruptcy.

Crippled with $3.7bn of debt and struggling to make interest repayments, MGM has recently had to shelve the development of Bond 23 and the two-part Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit, with Robocop the latest victim of the ongoing financial saga.

As MGM lack the money to produce films and are too heavily loaded with debt to tempt potential investors, this is unlikely to be the last high-profile project to get the chop.
