Devil May Cry 3

Like I say, it gets better the more you play it. Once you get your technique down with the weapons and you know the enemies, *that* is when it hooks you.

The graphics are superb, some of the best on the PS2 - the art direction is brilliant once you get passed mission 3. IF you get passed mission 3

Rayn: the challenge doesn't stop at the end credits :(

@ AG Systems: It's very similar to DMC1 the first time through on Normal: for the most part it's not bad, but the bosses may cause some grief until you learn their attack patterns and develop your tactics.

Be aware that there's actually a difficulty level ABOVE Dante Must Die this time, called Heaven Or Hell

PAL version is due out 25th March. Import. You know you want to.

i am considering it now, cheers buddie.

Another 'issue' I have with this game is that it's quite often not your fault when you get attacked, and this breaks your combos.

There doesn't seem to be any weight behind any of your moves either.

I am finding it tougher than the first game (I'm only on misson 3) and I really hope it gets more gothic as I don't really like the art direction on the first three missions.

I have been favouring Gunslinger, but I reckon I'll go for the one that lets you run on the walls and stuff as that's the kind of thing I prefer.

What do you mean? I have only been playing the first three missions trying to get some good rankings and just generally practicing. But that is one thing that I did not find at all. When ever I was getting hit, it was because I wasn't breaking off my combos in time. For the first bunch of enemies you come across, it is fairly easy to spot when they are about to attack you, which is usually my cue to block/dodge/attack that enemy.

A wiser man than myself pointed out that you can cancel out of any combo funk you may be stuck in by jumping or rolling.

And don't rely on the R1 lock too much, you'll often end up facing the wrong direction if your target moves (not entirely unlikely).

Yeah. I'm getting more impressed the more I see. I am up to the worm boss in the tower now, and have ditched the sword for the time being, as you need to be locked on to do high time.

Graphis have improved, level design is back to the good old. Sweet. :D

Much fucking harder than the first one. Or perhaps I'm out of practice!

  • 2 weeks later...

This is one bitch of a game.. but I absolutely love it!

Battling my way through Mission 5 at the moment and "Hard" is a bit of an understatement. (playing through on Normal..Easy is not an option!)

Its the boss battles that do it. You spend 20 minutes fighting your way through the level to get to the boss. You then spend another 10 minutes slowly chipping away at his seemingly endless health bar only for him to unleash a new and unexpected set of moves on you just as your nearing the kill!

Has to be said though, the satisfaction when you finally down one of the bastards is immense!

At times it strays dangerously close to that fine line between challenging & frustrating. Luckily its still on the challenging side of things at the moment and its keeping me coming back for more.

I thought I was the only one who was finding this tough. I even considered going to Easy but that would make me a softcock.

How do you kill the first boss (if he's even a boss)...the shadow dude?

Also, it's not that easy to pull off combos is it? I seem to end up performing the same moves and combos...anyone have any tips for this?

Am i the only one who thinks its shit? graphically dull, many jaggys, silly and none intimidating enemies, rushed presentation. How it got 8s all round i dont know.

The 1st one was way better in every department (except the pal one sans 60hz).

Keep on replaying mission 1 till you get the combat down. The first boss had me for a while, then it was the 2nd boss that had me cursing some more

Still a fantastic game and can't wait to get back on it later

Man this game kicks arse, I had high expectations for it but I don't think I expected it to feel exactly like the first one as soon as I started playing it. It's damn hard as well, or at least it is to start with - that bastard dog killed me many times until I decided to redo the first missions a few times. It felt a bit like cheating as you wouldn't be able to do that in DMC but I wasn't too bothered as it is definately harder than it. I'm actually wondering whether Normal is equivalent to DMC's Hard, not just because of the difficulty but as the Devil Trigger lasts for such a short time when you finally get it.

The styles are pretty cool too, I can see the potential in Royal Guard but I haven't really used it much yet. Trickster is great though and I would say essential for the first fight with Vergil. Trick away when he blocks, stinger back in and start your combo, repeat to fade. Excellent <_<

Man, I think this game's cool but after getting tanned once again by the mission 3 boss I gave up for the night. Having to redo the whole mission from the start gets annoying when the boss is such a challenge in himself.

I tried some of the different styles and found swordmaster to be the best fun and gunslinger to be the least effective (on that mission at least).

Love the movies, they put a big grin on my face. Dante rocks! Having played DMC1 and not 2, the difference was a bit of a shock, but I like the change in style, it feels like it's own game now.

Typically I turned off the PS2 when I gave up, forgetting that I hadn't saved the game at all! Oops! Oh well at least I can get some extra red orbs playing from the start again. I should probably try that Royal Guard defensive stance against the mission 3 boss next time, is it any good?

Use Gunslinger on the boss, very easy. Do not approach him, just stand to the left or right of the door you enter and keep shooting one of his heads. None of his attacks can harm you, except for the 'icerain'. As soon as the boss lifts his heads up stop shooting and run around in a small circle, dodging all of his 'icerain' attacks. And that is it. Just shoot from a safe distance.

I might grab a movie of it, just to show you how easy it is :(

Oh, the more powerful your Gunslinger style, the more easy the boss is <_<

Won't you get shit style marks if you don't mix it up? As well as utilising the guns I took the route ofJumping ontop of it and throwing down a few sword attacks, It'll roll to knock you off but it only takes a few attempts to sort it out.

I don't think Alan Stock cares about style points :( I sure did not when I played the game for the first time <_< And of course there are many ways to defeat the boss, but hey... the one I descriped is probably the most cheesy and effective one :D

I'm struggling with this game too. Do any of the later levels become MASSIVE? cos if so, starting from the beginning every time might stop me persevering I reckon. Its fun when Its working but its incredibly not fun when you're confused.

i'm at the start of level 5 fighting these blood bat things, but they just keep coming and coming.

So do you guys use lock on most of the time or do you mostly fight free? i've been using lock on about 90% of the time but I think I might be hampering myself.

I find it useful to use a mixture of the lock on and just manual aiming(if you will). I found that holding the lock on down often led to me facing the wrong way. So what I do now is manually aim most of the time with a bit of lock on to get me facing in the right direction and keep going manually. Against the bosses I tend to be locked on most of the time, except of course when they do some attacks that require you to run around abit to dodge them.
