Heads Up: Garth Marenghi's Darkplace Repeat

Okay, there's gonna' be a DVD release of Garth Marenghi this Christmas (that's when it's due for release, anyhoo) which will include directors commentaries on the episodes (presumably all of them) and about 90 minutes of "talking heads/bickering/bad behaviour and bad mouthing".

In addition to that Richard and Matt have a new series out in the Autumn which is currently untitled.

My thanks to the lovely Stephan Abrahams at Avalon (whose working on the DVD) for giving me this info.

Best news I've had all week - yay!

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to dig this up, but i need some forum support.

Personally i think the show is genious and one of the most innovative and high-concept pieces of comedy in years. Watched it with some american friends last year (for about the 2nd time) and they all loved it, but not seen it since. Anyway, i put the first episode on for my housemates tonight, who had heard of it but not seen it even though they're really into their comedy, and....they hated it. They thought it was shit. I tried to explain, but they weren't having any of it :(

I'm a bit gutted really as it's great to watch things through again and introduce people to new comedy and make them fans (as with my american friends). I just need to feel some forum love for the show to make me feel better

fuck it, going to pre-order the dvds to make myself feel better ;)

They've dragged their feet on this one for so long that I doubt it even has a market any more. I certainly don't give a shit.

They've taken far too long, sure, but I don't see how the market will have changed? It's not like people would go off Darkplace; the DVDs will be snapped up - if they ever arrive.

I mean, the original audience must have been miniscule, and how many of them still remember it? It's not likely to receive a big marketing push.

True, it would rely on its cult status with a very select audience to make anything approaching a profit. Channel 4 never gave it a big push when it was first aired, unlike some of the other comedy tripe they are only too happy to sell, so I doubt they'll make a triumphant fanfare about the DVD release.

Again, if it's ever released.

I don't think that's true. There were trailers everywhere - that's why I and all my housemates started watching it. Now, whether they were good trailers remains to be seen.

All I remember is a few short ads, and once the show started Channel 4 went mute. Perhaps they wanted it swept under the carpet after poor viewing figures.

I'd say exactly the opposite was true. Fuck all people watched it when it was first on, true, but that hardcore of fans loved it for the most part- word of mouth on the series will have built enormously since it was first shown. I bet there are loads of people who never watched it first time round who've seen it via downloads, or who've been shown it by friends. It can't harm the programme that there's a spin-off show coming up, as well.

this was what i was trying to explain to my housemates. They saw one ep, said it was shit, and weren't surprised it was cancelled as everyone else must have switched off at that point too. But that's the thing, Darkplace wasn't watched by millions and then everyone thought it was shit and switched off. Quite the opposite; hardly anyone watched it, and those that did loved it, and roped other people into watching too! Thus creating the cult classic we have today that NEEDS to come out on DVD, as there's likely more fans around now than when it was on TV.

I completely missed this first time round and have heard so much since about how good it is, but strangely enough, very little of what it's actually about.

Correct me if I'm wrong but is it some sort of crap horror novelist -- in the vein of Shaun Hutson -- type thing? I used to read Shaun Hutson as kid but Christ, are they shit when I look at them now. I used to think Slugs was the pinnacle of literature.
