Movies On The Psp

I find this a somewhat difficult concept to understand. I suppose that it's yet another way of shutting yourself off from the outside world on long car, bus, or train journeys, but......well, are movies actually enjoyable to watch on something that is so small ?

I personally can't imagine wanting to watch a movie on a handheld. I would prefer to see it on a large TV screen, or at the cinema.

So, are any of you lot really looking forward to watching DVD.......sorry, UMD movies on the PSP ?

As far as I can tell the PSP screen is only marginally smaller than a standard portable DVD player screen, so I'd say it wouldn't be difficult at all.

I've watched episodes of Futurama and Garth Merenghi's Dark Place on my GBA SP before comfortably and the PSP screen is twice the size.

the screen is marvelous, and if you can watch a movie and enjoy it on a plane - then you will enjoy it on your psp.

This is why this aspect holds no interest for me. I never enjoy watching films on planes, or portable DVD players while travelling.

I need to be relaxed in the cinema, or slopped out on the couch in front of the TV.

Well, I have always thought that a portable DVD player has a screen which is far too small to watch movies on, so maybe it's just me

If you can download a movie onto a memory stick and watch it, like you can with a PDA, then that's great, but hardly revolutionary. Bet they'll look nice on that PSP screen, mind.

The UMD thing I just don't get. I mean, I buy a lot of DVDs, and if there's a film I want to watch, I'll buy the DVD. I wouldn't buy the UMD disc as the only version of that movie, and I don't really appreciate buying it twice. It's not as if I can plug the PSP into my TV and watch Spiderman 2 on UMD on the big screen without it looking inferior to the DVD version, surely?

The entire idea of a proprietary format for movies seems like an anti-selling point to me.

It's the inappropriateness of the name that tickles me. Could anything be less 'universal'?

Aye. I watch loads of stuff on my PSP (I travel a lot, so I buy series of TV shows and stick them on memory Stick), but the DVDs I can still watch at home in their (and my) 'natural habitat'.

Buying a UMD movie = sad and wrong

Watching stuff you already have in a proper format, but in portable form cos you've also ripped it to Memory Stick = clever.

I agree about the UMDs, I really can't see why anyone would want to buy them over an actual DVD. Playing downloaded movie files on the PSP is rather good though. Invader Zim on the train is marvellous.

Indeed... Invaders Zim is a top choice and one of the first to be heading to my memory stick once I get a PSP!

As for Movies on the PSP never seen a market for it maybe for the odd long journey T episodes however is where it's at, at 20 to 45 mins an ep you can easilly watch them during your work comute or even at lunch... perfect for those times where you don't have a seat!

Cheers

I've been watching tv episodes (simpsons, scrubs, Family guy , Transformers :) ) etc) during my commute since I got the thing, not sure I could live without it now. ONly watched a couple of films, all comedies, not sure how well an action film (or any 'big' movment' type affair) would work to be honest.

TV shows like the simpsons are fine as they require little concentration, can be stopped and started where ever as the plots are small and can be enjoyed without even watching them. Films how ever i cannot watch while on the move. I either get bored or dont wana watch it. Ive always got southpark or simpsons on my phone/pda.

You can easily be as immersed watching a PSP screen (with earphones) as watching a normal TV.

But rumours are that Sony is going to be charging £15 for UMD movies - and I personally would never buy a UMD over a DVD, unless I was about to take a huge journey or something. I imagine most sane people would balk at paying £15 for a film you can only watch on your PSP too. Can Sony sell them for less without a loss? I dunno, but wake up Sony or noones going to buy your UMDs, especially when they can just rip DVDs for free..

Are the seriously trying to make them fail, or what?

Quite possibly. They did with pre-recorded minidiscs. Theres not much profit in them, but if they don't make any they can't really claim the film playback as a selling point over the DS. By making them, charging a lot, then pulling them off the shelves they 'win' on all counts. And they'll blame "the filthy pirates" for watching films on memory sticks when they do..

if i had to travel a lot on train etc i think it would be pretty neat. I mean i have tons of tv programmes i have downloaded but not got around to watching yet. It would be ace to download them and just watch an episode on the way to work and back.

But fact of the matter is, my job(s) are only 5 mins away and i drive so its kinda pointless.

I love my damn PSP but I just can't see myself ever buying UMD movies for it.

If Sony dropped the price to between 4 and 6 pounds it would land them in impulse buying zone - but even THEN I'd be hard pressed to justify a purchase.

The encoding route to my 1GB stick is perfectly satisfactory and makes my entire DVD collection portable (although not at the same time, naturally). Unless other portable players come out with some fantastic USPs - I can't see UMD movies taking off at all.

Are there any issues with DS/PSP and planes? Do the wifi thngs interfere with the plane's systems? Will airlines claim they do anyway? Technically you aren't even supposed to use CD players on planes, though surely laptops with CD/DVD drives would be out also?

Surely if Sony had made the PSP link up to a TV,for UMD playback, out of the box, you'd have millions of PSP owners who would, potentially, adopt UMD as their primary method of movie watching. Provided there was enough titles on offer.

It's time for another good idea bad idea.

Good idea:

UMD for home and on the move, together with the chance for people to display a PSP under their TV (with some obscenly priced stand).

Bad idea:

Asking people to pay out for both UMDs and DVDs, both at an annoyingly high price.
