Kung Fu Hustle

it's a great film - everything a kung-fu movie should be - an unexpected hero, comedy villains and amazing fight scenes.

it's all done with such enthusiasm and enjoyment, with a real love of storytelling where the Good Guy always wins. i love the way the main characters are seemingly ordinary, middle-aged Joes who just happen to know Special Techniques and kick seven shades of Fuck out of the baddies. the wire-work and effects complement each other so well and make a mockery of turgid multi-million dollar abortions like the Matrix sequels and Kill Bill.

i smile all the way through it. wonderful.

The only reason I didn't get around to it sooner was because I thought the CG would ruin the fights but I was wrong. It is a fab movie.

I recorded this off Film 4, but they have decided to broadcast it with an enomous black bar talking up a quarter of the screen, presumably becuase whoever is in charge of these things has some sort of disability that means he can't read normal subtitles.

I'd sooner watch the dub ^_^

But that's probably just shifted the black bar that would have been on top to the bottom, so it isn't actually cut. That's what happened with The Passion of The Christ that I saw a bit of anyway. I don't see any reason to complain about that.

I was randomly scrolling on Netflix* earlier and found this. Cant believe I’ve never seen it before! Extremely funny.

I’m not hugely literate in king fu cinema, but even I was able to pick up on a lot of the references and pastiches. It’s all done with such a straight faced sincerity, impossible not to fall in love with everyone.

The 00’s CG effects are truly awful, in a way that accentuates the comedy massively. But! For a comedy, the soundtrack, sets and wardrobe are excellent. Really give you that classic Hong Kong cinema vibe.

Shaolin Soccer next. :)

* Fitting, as Netflix launched their streaming service in the same year as this thread was last updated.

What do you mean by that? Is there an interesting story behind it?

Hong Kong cinema has be on the wane since handover 25 years ago, but there has been interesting film still from time to time.  In the last few years though, Hong Kong as a whole has lost a lot of freedoms very quickly and films are part of that.

Back in the days films like Infernal Affairs would get endings for Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese versions because of censors in China, and you can get films like Johnnie To’s Election that uses triads to make a comment about HK politics.  Now censorship also applies to Hong Kong, but the red line is very vague.  I am not sure if you can have Axe Gang on Kung Fu Hustle without the police stepping in and arresting everybody at some point in the film.

I always hoped Chow would do more films like this and Shaolin Soccer, but as far as I know he never did. :(

Mermaid was good.

He also remade on of his earlier films in some kind of weird sequal with a female lead.

I can't remember the name right now.

Also CJ7 or whatever it was called is a great family movie he did.

I was cringing when Dr. Normal and the Multiverse of Blandness stole the music fight fron this but did it boringly.
