Don't be a badge snob. Either you're saying 'All GM cars are shit', or you're saying 'All Vauxhalls are shit.'

If it's the former, then yeah, for the most part they are, but they're the second largest car company in the world (last I checked), and they get things right from time to time.

If it's the latter, then I completely agree with you, as the VX220s are brilliant (Lotus built), and the Monaro was developed (as has been mentioned) in Australia. It's also not a Vauxhall in all but badge.

I drive a Honda, in case you're interested.

Point taken :D .

Yes they do get things right - very, veyr occasionally - It's just when spending £30K on a "sports" car, I would go elsewhere. I mean the VX200 is a great car, no doubt, but I will still have an Elise - I just couldnt cope with buying a Vauxhall for £30K :(

And as for Honda , now ther do have pedigree, and build great cars.

Honda Trivia : Honda have never had a VTEC unit fail in the field. Other engine failures yes, of course, but the actual VTEC unit has not had one failure in all the millions they have sold.

I got the demo (finally!) this week - and I quite like it to be honest.

Graphically it "isn't all that" - but then I've played demos before where the final game was "night and day" more impressive so that doesn't bother me at this stage.

Handling - feels realistic, perhaps TOO realistic. GT's genius was in creating cars which handle the way people THINK cars handle - rather than how they actually DO handle. This results in everyone feeling like a driving god of course - but what they also did was reward those with skillz into infinity - in that it's possible to reduce your laptimes almost endlessly through finding better lines etc. etc.

Forza, by contrast, feels a bit unforgiving. It also feels a bit odd at times - especially once all grip is lost (when you're on ice regardless of where you're headed!). The cars are also awful to drive with the TC etc. on - there's a feeling of "not actually being in control".

It's also HUGELY throttle/brake sensitive - at one point I thought I'd broken the steering in the car only to realise I was ever-so-slightly touching a trigger and the car was therefore ploughing through the corner rather than turning-in - moving my finger a fraction caused the car to change direction like it had hit a tree!! (XBOX controllers aren't exactly subtle in this respect).

Upside is that there is a HUGE range of different "feels" in the cars available in the demo (esp. the tuned-up ones) and there's also a wide range of talent required (that 333 Ferrari is a BEAST!) - I just worry about how much will be required just to progress and whether that will put-people-off (tho the only sale I really care about is to me!!)

and then, finally, comes the AI - which is - erm - a bit poor IMO. On-track they just don't really try - we're not talking as poor as GT's "mobile chicanes" perhaps, but nothing special either (tho I'm sure you'll be able to up-the-ante on their skills).

One VERY worrying thing is the way they will just PLOUGH into you at any opportunity - making a trip from the grid/into the first corner a bit of a lottery.

One one occasion a car tapped me at the start/spun me round and then proceeded to push me all-the-way into the first-corner offside gravel-trap whilst I stared at him thinking "erm..."

Certainly looks to be something worth trying tho!

Ironically its not a vauxhall.... its a holden.....

It's going to carry the Vauxhall badge in the UK, isn't it? Good enough for me.

In my considered opinion, Vauxhall are a dire dire company, and smell faintly of cheese. The mere look of the "Monaro" (nice name, chaps) does nothing to enhance their reputation to me.

Yeah, I saw that Top Gear too.

I do love my VTEC.

TeamXbox preview

Forza Motorsport’s Career Mode allows racers to compete in both offline and online racing to earn credits (money) and improve a driver’s overall level. A home region is first selected which mainly affects how easy it is to access foreign cars in the game. For instance, if you select North America as your home region, expect to pay out the ass for a ride like the R34 Skyline which isn’t imported Stateside (yet). On the other hand, good luck getting your mitts on 70’s muscle cars if you live in Japan. The same goes for the European region, where Porsche’s and Ferrari’s are a dime a dozen, but both Asian and American cars are quite rare. You will still be able to unlock every car in the game no matter what your home region is, but it’s a good idea to choose a region that is most cost-effective for the types of cars you’re into. But don’t think for a second that you’ll be able to pick up an Enzo or similar uber car cheaper in Europe just because it’s made there. The truly rare cars are big bank no matter where your home region is (more on the rarity system later).
The online car swap meet should prove interesting due the rarity system and the ability to sell cars which have been highly modified by the original “owner”

How's your Japanese ? Are there any Japanese LIVE players ?

Hello,

Just for info, my friend is an M$ developer who worked on the AI (Drivatars) for this game.

I spoke to him the other day and said that the demo was getting negged on forums.

He said that the devs were aware of this and that they were forced to release an early build for the demo.

He said that the version he has now been given is much nearer to Gold and that it is a *lot* better.

Just so you know.....

I will definitely get it now...

The first impressions by a racing game fan on the Eurogamer board are the following....

First he wasn't so sure...

HarryB: anyway...

disappointing aspects to me are definitely the sound and the handling with all the assists off... the demo seemed to me like th eengine sound would be the loudest part of the sound... when im playing with surround sound now...ot's muffled out by birds tweeting and other crap...hardly hear the engine! :(

and the handling is a bit mad right now, but I guess this is because I'm driving shitty slow cars...

be back with another chunk of info soon

But then he changes his mind big-time....

HarryB: i have played the demo and after getting used to some differences it is definitely better... the handling is even more realistic than before with all assists off etc... it feels very real and the physics involved looks fantastic when you see the weight of the car shift from side to side (was doin some hand brake turns at 120mph)

i took the car i drive (a lexus is200) and thrashed it the way i have a few times and it has the same hadnling characteristics too! its an impressive game... but i think i need to sort out my sound... still aint getting the roar of the engine for some reason ;)

a very anal thing to note is that the skid sound effects actually sound real instead of a shitty skid sound effect from a certain ps2 racer...

Frod: ok :D now compare handling to certain ps2 "driver" :)
HarryB: Love it, so much more natural... i dont even feel like i need a wheel for this... it just works really nicely... like taking a tvr out for a spin with no assists is wheelspin frenzied excitement... take a mini cooper out and it squeels like shit as you go round the corners way too fast :)

you kinda feel the limits of the car a lot better and it definitely seems a lot more true to life

just tried to see how it deals with a J turn in the lexus and trying a 360 (speeding down a straight... hand brake to the right... release and turn to the left..)

it all plays out like my car does in real life... certain ps2 racer did not do this at all...

thumbs up!

the handling really is amazing... i just hurtle a lotus exige down a downhill course and its so nimble... i was throwing it all over the place and its so damn responsive... take my car out and i was spinning it all the time thanks to it being a rear wheel drive :P

AAAH IT IS SO PERFECT TO DRIVE!!

ill go take a mini cooper S on an avol and see if the top speed in-game is the same as real life for fun..

I got a 133mph out of the little thing... going to check for mini cooper S stats

real life top speed is 135... :D so the wind is maybe effecting it... when i was loading the track it said the wind speed as 16mph..

ill go take it to the ring and drive it down the massive straight see if i can get 135

hahaha, it's rather nifty... i got it to 135 on the straight... I couldn't get it any further... sounded like th eengine was going to bloody explode!!

yes I am definitely buying this! it is the same mad feeling i had when i got pgr2... I can see myself playing this on LIVE for over a year just like pgr2

So... Seems positive, and from memory he was bang on about Rallisport 2 and TOCA2 when he got hold of them.

The screens on IGN are worrying in that basic models of car look terrible (very poor detailing) but the super cars look amazing.

I'll have this soon enough anyway. I pray it's amazing for LIVE.

AND there'd better be an F1 car....

From my quick play of the demo in GAME, it's okay. The graphics are pretty damn good if you ask me. On a par with Gran Turismo 4. The handling is a bit.. overly stiff, but that could be just because I was driving a Lancer Evolution.

That demo is year-old code.

The game is 'out there', incidentally. Spent the last few hours playing it.

Hate it - it's a bland, characterless racer that emphasises realistic simulation over fun gameplay, with horrible car models, featureless tracks and terrible music. I expected nothing less, but had hoped for more.

It's better than the demo, but the demo was one of the most shite things I've ever interacted with, so it wasn't much of a task to better it.

Anyway - if you're one of those people who likes that soulless Gran Turismo shit, you'll probably fucking love it. Go have a blast.

Seems like it might not be your thing. :P

I've just bundled my way around the Nurburgring. It's very tough (even with all but 1 assist on)

It looks great, replays especially look superb. I haven't got a PS2, so can't compare to GT4.

I got into GT1 and 2 back in the day but couldn't be arsed with 3. Not sure if this will grip me yet.

EDIT: Soundtracks are implemented superbly, no stopping at loading screens, changing every 5 secs etc. All smooth and you can save it and have it all playing in the menus an' ting.

Crashes surprised me aswell, nice and meaty. I expected the old bump and stop of GT but I hit the back of this VW and sent us both spinning out onto the gravel :P
