It's been Mixed just like the recent RHCP albums. Same producer, same engineer. This is what happens when people don't give a shit about the art of audio engineering. Instead they maximise The Loudness of the final master by CRUSHING the dynamics with Gain Limiters. It's sounds very Mid-ranged and an absolute square wave master. Just so it's as loud as possible on the radio. Just like fucking TV adverts.

This is a Mixing and Mastering issue. I doubt the final CD release will sound much different.

Oh right, I apologise. Sucks if that's true, if it's the case that this is an accurate representation of the recording then I'm really disappointed, I wouldn't let something as distorted as this out for public consumption. It does sound like it's massively compressed but I'd attributed it to MP3 conversion, Synchronated seemed pretty sure it was a low bitrate mp3 that had been re-encoded higher. Listening to TDTNC at 2.20 (for instance) the amount of distortion that's present is absurd if that's to be released.

I can't believe that this is what they're planning on releasing but I'll be sure to give you credit if it's the case.

I was just pointing out stuff I had read.

One thing I will say, Taking into account files that are data compressed to various levels, The amount of dynamic compression and over all output gain of the album rip and every preview track is the same. At absolute maximum. This Leaked album rip is supposedly from the retail version and it sounds moderately better than the previews on itunes. This is what the record sounds like. completely in the red.

But all will be revealed in 10 days time.

I agree with you that the songs are too long and would be better had they been edited. I still think that about the end of TDTNC, but the song itself has grown on me, just that the song finishes 2 minutes before the timer on my iPod says it does.

Overall, right now it's the only Metallica album I'd have in the house.

the last 2 minutes of TDTNC are amazing... :P

if this is the only Metallica album you'd have in the house, it must be special...

:P

I guess it'll be Nile headlining. I've seen one awesome show by them (Bradford, In Their Darkened Shrines tour) and one bafflingly mediocre one (Leeds, just before the release of their next album). Anyway, it's on the 21st, and I cannae go - only a week after Metallica, and I'm out on the lash the night before.

Do you have any Nile records, DJSatan? I can wing some over if you like. You don't need to be a real DM fan to like them. The Egyptian stuff really spices things up.

Did anyone (Talvalin) get Itchy Phallic, or whatever the hell it was called? What was it like? I haven't bought a Nile rekkid since '...Shrines'.

Nah, but if you could mate, that'd be awesome.

Aye it is the 21st, i double checked. Probably too soon, but i just thought i'd give the heads up. I know i have a habit of missing stuff thats right under my nose (Gigs wise anyway)

All the currently* leaked versions are from a 128kbps WMA file. But whilst it isn't great, it seems better than the version of In Rainbows that Radiohead sold/gave away before the physical version appeared - I can't hear anything that sounds too awful, it's all just not very vibrant. From what people have said, the 320kbps versions kicking around sound worse than the 128kbps versions though.

That said, I'm pretty sure the article above is based on the CD itself (it's written before it was leaked) that was press demonstrated though, not the copied version. If so, they're not talking about what we are listening to. So I'm pretty sure that the released version will sound better than the current pirated copies, but I don't think it is going to sound good.

*When I "looked" for it earlier.

Title: Deluded Interval

Description: Awarded for claiming your favourite band is still capable of a good studio album when they've been shit for over a decade.

:P

(and staying true to form, the title is an obscure reference to which band and album?)

Not yet read the rest of the thread but I want to say "Diabolus In Musica" by Slayer.

*wanders off to check*

It's a riff on the album Lucid Interval by Cephalic Carnage, who aren't as obscure as some other bands that I listen to, but I'm guessing that only Kerraig and a couple of other people who post in this thread have heard of them.

I'll get my coat.

Damn.

Every time I listen to it now, it edges up in my opinion.

Once I get past the (failed) guitar player listening (i.e. I stop going 'oh, all he's doing there is sliding a powerchord a semitone') I'm really grooving.

Best thrash album I've heard for a LONG time, and I'm starting to think it's their most consistent since MoP.

Also, the production is probably their second or third best :P

People writing it off, it deserves a good few listens to gel. I'm thinking it's less disappointing than Tool's last, and all those disjointed riffs are starting to flow nicely.

Overall, I am liking it a lot.

Musical tastes and personality type are closely related, according to a study of more than 36,000 people from around the world.

The research, which was carried out by Professor Adrian North of Heriot-Watt University, is said to be the largest such study ever undertaken.

It suggested classical music fans were shy, while heavy metal aficionados were gentle and at ease with themselves.

Professor North described the research as "significant" and "surprising".

We all rule.

If he interviewed people from around the world, he clearly must have missed Norway if he suggests we're all gentle and at ease with themselves. Stabbing a gay guy to death cos he tried chatting you up displays neither gentility, or being at ease with oneself...

(minority example, I know)

Listening to the whole of Death Magnetic now (it's out-there)

Metallica have been dead to me since I first listened to Load, they've totally dropped off my radar. That's not to say I'm no longer a fan as I still listen to Puppets and Justice...

But this has really got me interested, I wouldn't be as bold as saying it a return to the good old days (would we even want that?) but it's best thing I've heard them do in a long time. It's going to take a could of listens before it sinks in and I can form a true opinion.

Oh I'm listening to it as 320Kb CBR MP3s, and the drums are easily the worst thing about the album, yeah Lars lets have the drums higher in the mix than the guitars, coz that is what metal is all about. Drums. :(

Let me add some fuel (hehehe) to the fire now that I've listened to the entire album a few times...

It's good, it's better than St Anger, but come on guys... It's not a 'return to form' (if with 'form', you mean the first four albums). It sounds like it's the third part of the Load-saga if anything (Reloaded, lol). Lars should also fuck off, btw. Death Magnetic's nice, but it definitely doesn't deserve the attention it's getting.

Now for some subtle trollin'! The last two Megadeth-albums shit on St Anger and Death Magnetic. :( Ooh!

It's much heavier and faster than Load... I love Load though. It sounds more like the kind of album I was expecting after And Justice - rather than TBA. Puppets is a one off - it's a work of genius... but the other albums are well stuffed with some pretty average tunes. Everything I've heard about this one, I like. So that would put it somewhere between AJFA and Ride the Lightning to me.

Oh - Cryptic Writings was Megadeth's last good album. They've been LOL since. Their last two albums have good stuff on it - but most of the tunes just wash over me and sound like filler from Peace Sells. IMO...

Rust in Peace was Megadeth's MoP. Amazing album and will not be bettered by them (him).

that's DM's problem though... he wants to lead when he should be riffin'. Hetfield will always rank above him in the Metal God CHAMBER OF AWE.

... but .. got to disagree with you, Rust in Peace is a phenomenal album. I want to listen to Tornado of Souls NOW
