Metal Review (probably the best metal review site in terms of good writing and coverage, although they do seem to be late with major releases for some reason)

From The Dust Returned (covers new and old releases with regular features, such as reviewing every German thrash album or the current feature focusing on Floridian death metal of the 90s)

The New Review (decent reviews, although with an occasional tendency to be overblown and not particularly critical - see the review of the latest Hate Eternal album for an example)

Sputnik Music (made up of fan contributions as well as regular staff reviews and so the quality can vary a lot, but the staff reviews tend to be very good and since the highest rated review becomes the default review for a particular album they are usually of a decent standard)

3 Inches of Blood - Deadly Sinners

The new ManOwaR.

,Jan 14 2005, 03:01 PM]3 Inches of Blood - Deadly Sinners

The new ManOwaR.

i downloaded the first manowar album the other week, brings back memories, metal daze indeed :D

the music reminded me more of early maiden, the vocals were similar to manowar, but a bit more high pitched, not bad,but his voice would get on my nerves after a while.

That's in THUG2, right?

Fun to start with, but gets annoying IMO. I took it off the playlist.

Finntroll are great. By all rights they should be a comedy band, but their music is very listenable.

(Edit: Is that even a word?)

I don't know if it was in THUG2, I was recommended it by someone else.

I like it though.

,Jan 15 2005, 05:26 PM] Help me name this song!

Found it in my playlist, but don't have a clue who or what it is. "s fucking good though.

Any help appreciated.

Wow! Really didn't think I'd have a hope of knowing it!

But I do B)

It's 94 Hours by As I Lay Dying

Unfortunately it's their best song by a long way (IMO) - but you can try stuff off the same album, it's called: "Frail Worlds Collapse"

I liked the 3 Inches Of Blood by the way - Kerraigs been recommending them to me for a while too.

I see you like Million Dead - I was invited to be in their new video last weekend... but I couldn't be bothered - video shoots take sooo long and are quite dull. Still... maybe I shoulda

In fact a lot of your Audioscrobbler is ace... good work

Heh - well I'd hope some discussion too - haven't you ever read the hip-hop one?

Personally I'd prefer to focus on newer music, cause that's what I have trouble keeping up with.

IMO, we should also absolutely ban any mention of:

Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Machinehead and so on and so forth :D

(unless they release anything new, where possible, that is)

new SoaD song, sounds alright, I'm interested to see what the more original stuff they've been talking about for the new album(s) is like.

Incidentally, it's a stunning time for metal gigs at the moment, with the likes of Mastodon, Megadeth, Hatebreed, The Haunted, Judas motherfucking Priest on the go, and a full System tour later on in the year :)

gonna get deaf

Well I like emo and METALcore () more than most straight up metal, so sure...

I dont think there has to be any strict rules as long as things don't get out of hand. As long as it isn't a list thread, I'll be happy -- so no just listing 20 albums/songs you like on their own!

It sounds like a good idea, but I too have tastes similar to Rantin' James so maybe make it a more general metal/hardcore thread?

Heh, I'm not long-hair-metal at ALL :P

Y'really don't need to be so precise about definitions.

Also, was reading the Hip-Hop thread and maybe we should just have a 'Metal' thread (this could be it) instead of a monthly one -- cos they talk about releases for THAT month... and I certainly can't keep up with that level of granularity... I wonder if anyone here does?

Also: MOST metal fans on this board are probably about 5 years younger, on average, than the hip hop fans.... which does make a difference.

Does anyone get CDs from Alice's Records? They have a pretty good newsletter/catalogue thing which has reviews of all the new stuff they get in. Usually worth looking through to see if you can download samples of them.

Let's do it... and cheers for naming that tune!

I think it should start with a "Recent Bands You May Not Have Heard" + links to free MP3s. I almost pissed myself laughing at that Finntroll song - Nordic Pirate Metal comedy gold!

All-encompassing too, methinks.

Oooh, I might have to look that up.

For me, Leviathan >> Remission, though Kerraig assures me that's just cos it's so much more accessible, which may be true.

Seen them once before and was deaf for days!

So, In Flames - tell me a track to d/l or put a link up here... I've never really heard any - what're they like?

Maybe we should just make THIS the metal thread and leave it at that B)
