I don't think I've seen or heard one bad thing said against this show.

I must get the DVD set and see what all the fuss is about.

Shame it's gone up in price everywhere though.

Check WH Smiths - my local store was doing it for £15. Bargain!

EDIT: Start with season 2 of Buffy. If you watch Season 1 1st you WILL be put off. Nothing happens in it that you won't pick up anyway.

No way! If you did that you'd fail to get the Buffy/Willow/Xander dynamic. Cordelia's gradual inclusion into the group wouldn't work and Passion, arguably the finest episode, would lose most of its emotional weight. I'd be more tempted to skip Some Assembly Required, Bad Eggs and Go Fish. They add nothing.

Also, I love this thread. Every so often I'll see a post by someone saying "hmm, might check this out', I come back a few weeks later and they're jizzing all over it. I fucking love the internet sometimes. n.b. I liked Firefly first.

Hmmmm. I must be the only one who didn't like firefly one bit. I yarred all the episodes, watched 4 or 5 of them and quickly deleted them from my hd, and no, i'm not gonna torture myself to death-by-boredom by watching the rest.

I guess it just didn't click with me.

Nah, you're not alone. The US government recently resurrected Mussolini and that was the EXACT same thing that he said.

I'm surprised Mussolini actually watched the pre-requisite "four or five episodes to get going". "Cowboys... in Space" is a hard enough concept to market to normal people let alone facist Italian dictators from WWII.

So yeah, I finally got around to watching this after hearing nothing but praise for it. And to be honest, it's not all that different to any other Sci-Fi space opera show from the last 10 years.

And they try far too hard with the whole Western in space thing, sublety is your friend. A western theme tune, with a western looking title sequence, with western dressed characters over a western-wanted poster like filter with a western font is not subtle.

It's not bad, certainly watchable, just hardly as excellent as made out. The weird sister is a good character, everyone else is a cardboard cutout. I think I can sum it up by the fact that when it had finished, there was an epsiode of Andromeda on right after, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out if it was another episode of Firefly or not until that clown from Hercules showed up. It looks like just every other sci-fi show going, except with slightly shoddier CGI, the sets looked absolutely identical.

The fact it's Joss Whedon seems to have gotten people a bit too excited I think.

I don't th8ink I've ever read such a consistantly wrong paragraph in my life.

Be my guest to elabourate on that, the epsiode I saw didn't exactly give an insight into all the crew but from what I saw there was the good old, outlaw Captain who still has strong values (and let me guess, he's probably a former soldier of some kind), the untrustworthy greedy guy who's totally hard as nails, the kind doctor, passangers with myserious past/person looking for help with trouble on their tail all rolled into the brother and sister, the rest of the women all seemed too boring to be noteworthy although one of them seemed to be the good old female engingeer stereotype. It's like a cut paste job of every space crew ever.

Yes, but one episode doesn't exactly give you the best idea of character development. Try watching some more and see how you find it.

Out of curiosity what episoe did you watch? If you can get hold of the DVDs then watch them. The ensemble of the characters, their relationships and the way they interact with each other is simply unmatched by anything else. That's where the show's strength lies and that's where it's better than any other 'similar' sci-fi shows. It's not really the sort of thing you can understand from watching one episode.

The writing, too, in most cases is incredibly quick and witty. The show has an amazingly funny streak and heart to it but can very often turn incredibly dark. As for the SFX being poor... They're certainly not.

I intend to watch it some more, but it hasn't exactly got off to a good start distinguishing itself. I'm guessing one of the other crew members is the elegant, extravagant girl who dresses classy, and the other was meant to be the hard as nails woman?

The epsiode was one where they broke into a hospital to scan River(I think?) and steal some drugs to sell.

I was expecting some typical, Wehdon-esque witty dialogue but there really wasn't much on display, in that one at least.

You should watch it from the 1st episode. The 'classy' woman is simply a high class prostitute.

I intend to now, I just happened to catch one on TV and immediately knew what was happening, and immediately knew who everyone was because they were so blatantly stereotypical. The only thing I didn't pick up on was the classy woman being a prostitute, I seem to have the rest of the crew nailed. I'll lend the DVD off a mate and see if it's any different from the start, but I don't see how it can change whole 'probably ex-soldier, good hearted captain and his crew of assembled misfits trying to make a living in spaaaace' thing.

Been watching this lots over the last 2 weeks, after reading about it in the forum waay back and it's my new favourite TV series. :)

I had my doubts watching the first episode but after watching a few more I was hooked. Likeable characters, lots of memorable one-liners and some good entertaining action thrown into the mix, it's all good. And no sci-fi stuff at all. Yay.

The last episode I watched cracked me up loads. The bit where the captain is revived by his torturers, who then inform him that that he died for a bit and he responds with "well it seemed like the thing to do." :)

I downloaded the series but having seen it for about 30 euro on DVD, I'll certainly be picking this one up.

Loved Firefly, but can never get away from the Cowboy Bebop ripoffness of it all.

Roll on the movies!

Yeah, I started getting Cowboy Bebop deja-vu with some of the plotlines. Serenity ain't gonna be getting involved in dogfights tho and Firefly has loads more depth than Cowboy Bebop ever had.

I've watched the whole series now, can't believe it finishes like that with so much unresolved stuff, have to watch Serenity asap!

Also I never guessed that they were swearing in Chinese, it sounds all classy when they fire off randomn Chinese phrases, kinda like swearing in French.

£19.99 in HMV, or £17.99, can't remember.

Most of the boxes I saw on the floor were the plastic ones, with one that had the cardboard sleve.

I had some Xmas money banging about, so picked this up for £17.99 in HMV. Just randomly really, I knew a few people here liked it (and ppl at work), so I thought it was worth a punt. I was right.

Wicked stuff! Me and my friend watched it over 2 days, she was really really pissed off that it ended there. What a filthy mouth she has.

Right though, tis bloody fantastic. I'm gonna have to watch Serenity now.

I can't believe that it got canned. I mean there's so much stuff there unresolved. A real ARGH factor when watching the last episode.

Serenity resolves plenty. It's fucking excellent.
