That wakeup Raging Demon was awesome!

Really sick use of the demon and the divekick, I'm tempted to start playing Akuma now ;)

Speaking of online play, I've just got word that there's a Kaillera-enabled version of the CPS-3-functional version of MAME, so now there are no excuses to get your multiplayer on.

Apart from lag.

Ah, sorry about that qazimod. I was on holiday that weekend - I'm definitely up for some though! Just send me a message on the 360 if you want a game and some easy wins.

Argh! Turns out organising the right files is as awkward as ever, and CPS-3 asks for a CD in the standard version, so you have to get a special version that skips all that malarkey and gets you straight into the game. Everything else is just like other Kaillera-enabled MAME releases; just choose to play a network game and the client will boot up and start populating the server list. I couldn't get into many since the slow ones were slow and the fast ones were occupied, but doubtless I'll try again some other time.

Current synopsis of CPS-3/Kaillera:

Lag hurts.

My Ibuki got destroyed by a proficient Genei juggler by the name of Jim Miles.

His Aegis traps are pretty painful too.

I was also humiliated by a proficient Tengu juggler from another community.

That said, I've had one or two online victories in the past...

Anyway, I was going to stick a few on my YouTube but the lag was already doing horrible things to the game. I mean, the slowdown caused by the lag isn't the problem since the game normally runs at a decent clip, but when lag does occur it destroys any chance you had of performing a certain combo, so my dash through>backflip over>kunai in the face "routine" was shot to pieces. Nevertheless, on a good server, it's not too bad...

Yeah, I had some fun games with Qazi. Playing in a laggy environment definitely rejigs the worth of certain moves and I think my main advantage came from realising this and adapting my play accordingly. Standing fierce with pretty much any character suddenly becomes a lot, lot better (just less time to react really - much more likely to connect or trade hits with weaker moves) and I made sure to keep to the most primitive Genei Jin and Aegis larks - even if you get the two hop kicks (Yun) or charge partitioned headbutt (Urien), the little gaps in between that the lag adds still mean the palm (Yun) or toe poke (Urien) won't connect and it's all been for nothing. Losing consistency on Yun's lp, lk, mp xx genei and Urien's chariot corner juggles was the main thing I noticed but adding the lpshoulder tackle into Yun's Genei set up eased it (though not enough to get more than 50% consistency in the super cancel) and settling for lk tackle with standing strong in the corner into a 50-50 or Aegis was a fair compromise for Urien. Also, random or comboed use of Urien's EX headbutt was largely unaffected by the kind of lag we were getting.

Online (and in arcades with bad sticks - something I've had a fair amount of experience with) it's all about adapting to sub optimal conditions and I think this was the edge I had as Qazi's Ibuki is really pretty good (lots of crossing up, tonnes of air time) but I could tell that none of his usual combos were coming out under the lag and I could rely on trading hits and simple combos to comfortably take the wins.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that Jim plays an awesome rush game, especially with Urien. I'm used to running circles around opponents with my Ibuki by hitting them a few times, flipping over them and dashing away - there have been times where I've literally left opponents standing. However, Jim's Urien can put a lot of pressure on me, usually when he uses his shoulder-barge to move around and quickly catch me in mid-air, and so most of the time when I landed I had to get out of the way again, rather than counter as usual.

Anyway, I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it was certainly one of the few online sessions I've had where I've been on a constant defensive, rather than a balance of counters, dodges and attacks.

Here's a fighting game related video I made yesterday. Looks like Qazi and I are the only ones still reading this thread, but he's not on MSN so this is one place I know he'll find it!

Anyone going to Retro North? Shendy, I, and - I think - Willei will be there and no doubt playing as many fighting games as we can get away with before being branded TV hogs (joke). 'Twould be jolly nice to meet some of the other fighting game fans on here, if any of you are going.

I had some great matches at Retro North with TheShend, Willei, and Willei's friend Dan. No videos sadly, so an in depth report will have to suffice:

First off, TheShend's Q is jolly good. I took several beatings in the first wave of matches from his uncanny ability to super at the right moment (after I tried to respond to blocked moves that granted him frame advantage, mostly) and command grab from deceptively far away, along with some tricky guessing games on wake up. Of course, Q is a vulnerable character in many ways and I exploited these mercilessly through careful spacing with Urien. I stayed at that distance where chucking out standing LP/MP/FP/MK and crouching LP/MK/RH beats out most of Q's attempts to move in while poking away at him, and I can dash forward unexpectedly at any time to attempt a throw. This means Q is pressured to retreat or jump in. Retreat leads to a corner and nowhere to run, which is particularly undesirable if Urien is packing super. The risk of being caught by an anti-air sphere or delayed crouching FP makes the jump-in another reluctant option and even careful midair parrying won't stop a throw attempt upon landing. I was able to set up a lot of Aegis 50-50s in the corner and even the odd anti-air sphere to four tackle juggle (I use the easiest: RH tackle, EX tackle, RH tackle, MK tackle) which does outrageous damage. It was an uphill struggle for Shend against my Urien but he still took a few, impressively.

Yun was a different story. We were trading hits all over the place (which is a very bad deal for Yun), and my Genei Jins were stopped dead with throws and supers much more than I am used to. Shend got an 8 win streak on my Yun, which is no mean feat for Q on Yun. After this I was determined our final match of the day should be Yun vs Q and I managed to take it just barely with some rather cheeky tactics of simply running away, building meter, activating GJ, doing some damage, and then repeating - I didn't even care if Q got his three taunts in, all I wanted was to make sure that whenever I touched Q, I was in Genei Jin.

The matches with Willei and Dan were less exciting by comparison, possibly because I've played Willei before and Dan was out of practice in a way that meant the aforementioned chariot rush juggles were very easy to force. Of the four of us, I was the one who stuck to my main characters the most closely, and the fact that Willei plays a wide range means no single one is good enough to beat me consistently, despite him taking at least one win with each of them throughout the day - if he specialised he'd probably be better than me.

It was a shame there wasn't a perfect setup for King of Fighters (98/2002) but I enjoyed what I played of 2002 with Willei, despite unfortunate 50Hz-age. Probably better I learn the game properly before playing him properly anyway. Next time!

Good games all.

Yeah, great matches Jim!

Against Genei Jin I have very little competitve experience and I was trying all sorts (and eating it when it failed) to pull you out of it. I tried to pick you up out of incoming shoulder with a command grab, ate it, hand slaps, ate it and also EX hand slaps but the start-up is to much and yes, I ate it. One thing I can rely on are the periods when you need to close the small gaps left when blocking the GJ, so insta-Supers like Q's SAII, Makoto's SAI and Yun's SAI. Even then though, Q's SAII traded with Yun's normal in GJ!?!? Yun is strong! But yeah, really impressed with your ability with Urien and Yun and the chance to play a better mon than me using them was top. I like Urien myself but the partition escapes me until I learn the stick.

I can't do GJ myself so when I picked Yun I opted for the big hitter You Hou (SAI) and was the character I could only really pin your Urien down to any degree. Although I tried with Ryu as well. Oh and that dash up throw after the blocked tackle xx Aegis ALWAYS got me :( Your Urien takes liberties with me and no mistake :(

Disappointed with my Oro and Ibuki, just to rusty and didn't trouble anybody but I'm amazed I worked in a slower version of the rapid-fire LOV with Remy in one match :( I'm quite fond of Remy.

One thing I did learn was that I jump in too much and get horribly punished for it >_< Anti-air sphere and it's over!

Great matches Jim, experience was worth the trip in my view :(

Edit: Some phuturs of the experience:

Jim imparts sage advice except how to beat his Urien.

I'm reading the thread, I just never have anything worthwhile to post.

Do you still play? I seem to recall playing a few games with you over Live back in April, and these days I can't find any Live friends willing to play (and I'm miles from an arcade, so offline competition is out of the question.)

The 3S Live thread is here btw. Anyone else in that thread want a few matches sometime? Nate? strawdonkey?

I can play, I got distracted a while ago, but I'm always up for a game (anyone) although I'm rubbish. Just chuck me an invite or message and I'll pop on over.

Well my youtube channel was the only 1 I was aware of that had the most videos of any channel, but it's been pipped by a fair margin by another guy, although to be fair, he is putting up any and all videos of any fighting game. His 3S stuff isn't to the same detail as moi's though

You also have lots of stuff that's only found at your channel, which is ace (and if ever you want exclusive qazi content, complete with dodgy editing, questionable music and too much Ibuki, you know where I am...)

Where do you do your 3S meets? London?

How do you find out when/where they're on?

Just noticed this post! We don't hate you Gwynster.

Two places you can visit 'ster, there's the 3rd Strike specific forum of ranking battles uk which is pretty much entirely London-centric.

The 2nd place is Neo Empire, check the forums for regular events across a variety of titles and again it's fairly London-centric but has healthy communities from the rest of the country.

Actually, I should've been in attendance at the 1st North West 3S RanBat but events conspired against me, still, if you want to see how that event went then check out this playlist on my channel: North West UK Ranking Battles

Following on from my last message, that guy's account has been suspended! I think I can claim my Number 1 spot again :(

Super vs Battle

Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th March there will be a gathering of folks to play lots of different fighting games. I'll be making the trip down on the Saturday with a few friends along with Willei and maybe Singho, anyone else making an appearance?

£10 per ticket plus an extra £5 for each and any tournament you want to enter yourself into, however you can turn up on the day but it'll be £15.

I know VF5 has its fair share of attention here, will folk be turning up?
