Without a doubt, the most hilarious example of blatant product placement in any movie ever:

In Super Mario Bros. where Bob Hoskins sets the walking bomb at the end and it falls down and starts walking upside down...it has the Reebok logo on the bottom of it's feet, which the camera lingers on for 2 seconds before it explodes. Random as hell.

I think they changed it for some reason - either cos no-one in Europe knows what Taco Bell is, or for legal reasons. Did they paint over Taco Bell with Pizza hut on the DVD or something?

Whatever, I only really remember Taco Bell because of that film, and when I was in Sydney, I was tempted to get one! There was one near me about a decade ago, but not for long...

The irony being of course that Taco Bell doesn't exist in Sydney anymore.

No-one ate there.

For second place I'd nominate Superman II for bad taste (all the Marlboro advertising in the city fight with Zod).

That's the first one I thought of. And Zod gets thrown into an absolutely giant Coca Cola illuminated sign.

In Back to the Future II, aside from the Nike & Pepsi, there's Pizza Hut at the future McFly's home and the oven thing is Black and Decker IIRC.

I, Robot was shocking, it go tthe most obvious PP placement I've ever seen.

But one thing you might notice are the logo's on computers suddenly increasing in size. IBM got used in (I think) GoldenEye, and ever screen, laptop or server had a massive, and I mean massive IBM logo on them. The logo's in real life on these boxes are quite sutle - usually a tiny little logo in the bottom right, so they actually went to the expense of producing machines with stupid sized logos on as well.

I'm sure Dell's logo's have increased as well - and I certainly don't buy that Apples get put on set by accident - do you think they would actually pay Apple if they wanted 100 PC's to appear in a scene ?

It's obvious. Reebok supports terrorism.

I know its not a film, but the O.C manages to get its fair few references in.

They show Apple some love (Ryan & Chris working on school presentation - 'Why don't we just surf the net, and I'll download it onto my PowerBook?'), too many iPod flashes to count. Oh and can't forget the Tivo (I think in one episode Sandy metions it about 3 or 4 times!)

I still love the show tho'...

Mention simply has to go to Santa Claus: The Movie, in which a little girl sees poor freezing urchin on the street and takes him a plate of food and, of course, a can of Coke. The genius is not only does she linger in the doorway with it, but when she puts it down carfully in the snow, the word COKE is displayed to the camera. When the urchin comes to get it, the can has been rotated so the Coca-Cola side is now showing. And of course once the lad has just a sip of the heavenly beverage he collapses in some kind of drug like coma, oblivious to cold, poverty, everything but the can in his hand.

It's my new favourite.

A lot of Apple product placement in films isn't down to Apple. Their machines are picked by set dressers because they look good.

I also notice a lot un-Apple appearances on tv. I think both The Sopranos and Friends show characters using Ibooks which have had stickers placed over the Apple logo on the lid to hide the branding.

And Rockstar - that guy had a square poster with the logo on on his wall. I've never really noticed PP that much though.

That actually worked the other way.

Nintendo sold the film on the fact that it contained the very first footage anywhere of Super Mario Bros 3 and fans clamoured to see it just to get a glimpse of the new game.

The stand-out product placement film for me is The Lost World. Constant, close-up shots of Mercedes badges. Every time they drive around and have to stop suddenly, the camera is at just the right place to get their 4x4's grill in shot and a 15ft Mercedes logo up onto the screen.

I was watching Fight Club the other day and it's quite amusing how many Pepsi machines are in the movie, placed in truly bizzarre locations - In the middle of a hotel corridor, or in a dark alleyway by the back entrance of Raymond K Hessel's convenience store.

Plus you get the entire Spice Girls' Pepsi commercial playing on the soundtrack when the Space Monkeys are watching the news to see the report on Project Mayhem.

It's probably meant to be ironic, or something.

I was watching Fight Club the other day and it's quite amusing how many Pepsi machines are in the movie, placed in truly bizzarre locations - In the middle of a hotel corridor, or in a dark alleyway by the back entrance of Raymond K Hessel's convenience store.

Apparently, they were insert purposefully to impose a bad image on the Pepsi brand, what with the whole anti-capatalist theme the film holds.

Of course, it can go all go horribly wrong eventually. That happened when the game came out.

Yeah, but it's a film about phones. It would be pretty hard to make a film about mobile phones without showing the make of the phone in it. Or you could just cover up the logo, which would take you out the films 'zone'.

So, 'ease it', nig. It's not hilarious in the slightest. If anything it's a subtle social commentary on Nokia's leadership of the market.

I have that poster on my wall. Grand Theft Auto was also mentioned in the first episode and they're always playing on the playstation, but as the OC is set in the current times, I don't think it's much of a problem. What else would they be playing on?

Angel also had lots of Xbox product placement going on.
