Yup... It's coming according to Dark Horizons...

...in related Cage news Universal is currently in the process of remaking the Korean revenge flick "Old Boy" for American audiences with Director Justin Lin ("Better Luck Tomorrow") helming the tale of a newly released prisoner out on a rampage. So who's tipped to play the guy? Yep, Cage.

Could this be any good then?

there is nothing I can do or say to change hollywood's opinion and I have no clear reason why they should, or have anything more to add, except this rant:

WHY do they need to remake it, besides MONEY?

it's not like it's really old and dated, with poor acting and ropey effects. imo, it's a brilliantly stylish, well acted, imaginative and dark thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it's probably in my top 25 films ever.

I cannot see why they would remake it to 'appeal' to americans more. korean architecture and technology is similar, so no difference there. the theme of revenge is used in hollywood movies all the time.

oh yes, of course. the people are speaking a different language, thus the need for subtitles.

maybe I'm going too far but the only conclusion I can make about this is that hollywood are possibly racist, money grabbing c*nts.

they could at least just release it dubbed with Nic Cage's voice over the top.

Maybe I’m just not the precious type, but I don’t get why *most* posters round here are so dismissive towards remakes… I mean if I watched the remake and it was great, I’d certainly seek out the original like I did with The Thing and Invasion of The body Snatches -- two of my all time favorite movies!! And if its crap, oh well, I still have the original...

Don’t blame the exec that green lit the remake – blame the dumbass average Yanky cinemagoer that avoids “foreign muck” on principle…. Can you blame Hollywood for tailoring its products to said average cinemagoer's needs/wants???

you're missing the point. Old Boy is hardly aimed at the American market anyway. by remaking the film you are raising awareness of the original too. it's not about which version is better.

Whose missing the point?

Not ALL remakes are bad, granted.

Oldboy, 8.6 out of 10 and #115 in the top 250 films (IMDB).

Why do a remake of this? Why? WHY?

If there are up and coming actors/writers/directors why doesnt hollywood chase them down? I'm sure they would be happy to be promoted in that way.

Remakes (Adaptations) can be cool like A Fistful of Dollars, I just think this sucks.

;)

but seriously I don't see alot of point in a remake. there are two sides to the reasoning:

for:

- it may get some people to seek out the original and thus gain more audience for the original

- the korean writers probably get some money for it

against:

- most americans will not realise it's a remake because this probably won't be mentioned alot

- if americans do realise this then they probably won't care and stick with the remake because subtitles are 'gay' and american versions of everything are 'better'

- the remake could be bad and take the film in a totally wrong direction (such as the US Taxi remake - which I haven't seen but I would bet money is shit)

- shit remakes do tarnish the original's reputation

- watching the original after the remake will take away alot from the film

- it's only 2 years old, and is a good film, not a crap one, so again, why remake it?

and they are probably only doing it due to the current fashion of remaking foreign films for hollywood, because they don't have any new ideas of their own.

you know i was watching this the other day and i wondered why Hollywood hadn't remade it yet. I mean there's nothing wrong with it, the effects stand up to this day and are unique so why not do a remake.

I mean they're doing Assault on Precient 13 *Now with added plot*. So why not The Thing. I'm sure some souless CG creations would piss over the work done in the original.

Who cares? Really? There's some desperately precious attitudes in this thread. It's not like they're deleting the Korean version, forever replacing it with the US one. If the new one is crap, or you don't want to watch it - watch the original instead. It really is that simple.

Me.

Well, I look at it like this:

If I enjoy a film then I would not want to know of a remake.

If I watch a film and think meh (it's not bad, it's just OK), then it wont bother me

As I enjoy this film then I will moan about the remake, I wouldnt moan about a remake of say the city of lost children
