I am about to watch the final episode of 'the return', and I am blown away. Some of the best imagery I've ever seen, superb off-beat humour, and a storyline that's right up my street. I can't believe how good it's been and how much I've enjoyed it. The kind of thing that has made me happy to be alive to have experienced it.

I think Lynch is a genius. And I don't throw that word around lightly.

Just realised, last night, that Carel Struycken played Lurch in the Addam's Family movies.  I've never connected the two before.

Dude I didn't realise it was Doc Brown playing Fester all this time. Staring right in my face.

Having just finished season 3 and reading through this thread, and finding this post which was made before the penultimate episode which featured the same line, I have to know what the original youtube video was! The link is now dead.

I've just finished the fifth episode of season one. So far I'm a bit bemused. Am I missing something? It's not nearly as odd as I've been led to believe, aside from the unusual, presumably intentionally stilted and awkward directorial choices.

It's not blowing my mind. I'm a bit disappointed. On paper it's the kind of thing that I'd love.

If you're five episodes in and not into it, i doubt it will get better for you. I can’t  tell you what youre missing, as for me its likely to be that you weren't a teenager watching Twin Peaks in 1990, so it wont ever be the same for you as it was for me.

Twin Peaks the Return is quite a different proposition so if you like Lynch’s films but hate the original tv show then that might just about be worth a go but otherwise no.

It gets odder as it progresses. Season one is fairly straightforward with an underlying sense of weirdness and menace. Season two brings in more supernatural elements. Fire Walk With Me is essentially a horror movie, and season three is absolutely batshit.

Did you at least watch the pilot episode before you started? It's not always made clear that you need to do this, but the show won't make a lot of sense without that.

If you're not invested in the characters or the mystery after five episodes, though, this show isn't going to do anything for you.

Speaking as someone who only got into Twin Peaks a decade or so ago, it may still be worth sticking with simply because it's not quite like anything else.

Season 1 is basically a 90s soap opera pastiche with an undercurrent of Lynch weirdness.

Season 2 continues this for a few episodes, then Lynch sods off for a bit and it turns into, well, a dodgy 90s soap opera before Lynch comes back for a pretty mindblowing ending. I do think it's worth watching the shit episodes, but I don't think you'd lose too much by skipping them. I'm sure there's a watchlist somewhere if you're after the essential ones.

Fire Walk With Me is horrific, in a good way.

Season 3 (The Return) is probably what you're looking for, and is the point where things go full weird. It's astonishingly good, but won't make any sense whatsoever without the grounding you get from the older seasons and the movie.

The Return is still the greatest piece of film or television I've ever seen. I still can't believe it got made. A month doesn't go by where I don't think about the ending.

I liked it a lot, but I do think that:

Spoiler

The absence of proper Cooper until the very end was a real misstep, considering that it's likely we're not going to get another season.

I remember watching Twin Peaks, especially the first episode which sticks in my mind.

The Returm is weird as heck. It's also very very slow for a large portion of the season. I guess i enjoyed most of the weirdness? But i'm not sure i would "return" to it myself in the future.
