Question For The 'ip-'op Boys

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering the other day what the hardcore hip-hop and rap lot on here make of Eminem.

It was when he was on Radio 1 taking over one night and played the single about him being a soldier in a war and all that jazz, it made me wonder.

In terms of johnny casual, everyone thinks hes a rap genius and one of the best, but how is he considered in the hardcore circles?

Is he like FIFA?

I thought the radio show he did was pretty weak to be honest, but I do like him. 'The Slim Shady LP' and 'The Marshall Mathers LP' are both modern classics in my opinion, but I'm not feeling his new album at all, and much of 'The Eminem Show' hasn't stood up too well over time, but it still has some nice beats.

Most of the time I listen to his underground stuff. 'Infinite' is an album he made himself before the Dre signing, and on it he probably raps some of his greatest verses of all time. His flow is incredible, and some of the Skam songs ('3hree6ix5ive' in particular - when a rapper talks about going back in time to stop you from being born during a battle you know the guy has skill) are just insane.

To be honest I just dislike the people he has gotten himself involved with. Obie Trice, 50 Cent, DJ Green Lantern etc. they all have massive ego's and the radio show was just an obvious example of that. I don't know if he'll ever get back to being like he was before he acquired his entourage, but they definitely aren't doing him any favours.

In my opinion.

I've got a very rough bootleg of Eminem in full battle mode (I think it's called the Rap Olympics or something like that) and it's absolutely berserk. Goes on for about six minutes of 30 seconds bursts and by the end he's just screaming that he's gonna kill them.

However, Canibus remains the greatest lyricist especially in re: freestyles.

I've no issues with his rapping, but have major issues with his insistance on using the shitest beats he can get his hands on / produce under the illusion of having some production flair.

If only there was some meat or some vaguely classy sounds behind him could I possibly treat him as something other than an (occaisionally amusing) irritance.

I'm with most of the others on this (David Heath, ptwizzy especially)...great MC IMO, but the beats he rhymes over, especially on his last two albums, and all that D12 stuff, are very weak.

Shame. Anyone heard the track Any Man, from the Soundbombing 2 comp (I think)? Superb stuff....oh how good he could have been.

Never heard of it. Is it easy to track down? At college at the mo soo can't check.

Soundbombing 2

A quick search found it on Amazon. Highly recommended, full of bad ass tunes. I have it on tape, from when it first came out. I'm sure you can get it on CD though.

We better end this convo quick before we get told of for posting in the wrong thread

I'm pretty much with the other guys. His production is appaling and he seems to surround himself with very pedestrian proteges.

He's good but we're all pretty tired of him at this point. Especially as Encore and The Eminem Show seem to retread all the same themes he'd already covered perfectly well in the preceding records.

I must track down some of his battle raps. They sound rather good.

True. Before we do, I found it on Amazon.co.uk and it looks ace - so I'll order it when I can afford it, cheers!

Someone help me - I quite enjoy a lot of the stuff Eminem raps over. I would say a lot of the time now it's only the production that I get interested in.

Example - The Eminem Show - Soldier was an awesome beat, as was Say Goodbye Hollywood, Business, and more.

Not saying my opinion is right, but educate me - what is an example of a good hip hop beat, if they're not?

I don't know what those beats sound like but i'd imagine they're from Dre's studio right?

I'd suggest you try and listen to anything produced by Dj Premier for starters.

I can't link anything but try and find Krs-One's - Mc's Act Like They Don't Know if you can and we'll take it from there.

The first one is far better

Anyway, wrong thread…

The first one is also excellent, yes. Not sure if I'd say far better, but probably a bit better. Personally I don't think there are many duff tracks on either.

Oh, and I did already acknowledge that we were doing this in the wrong thread, but cheers for reminding us again :o

I really like Eminem. I just wish I could like his stuff. If you get what I mean.

Let me also repeat what Daimond said about 'Any Man.' It's amazing. Just battle-style rhymes and twisted imagination. Superb production from Da Beatminerz (I think), and a great scratch and cut intro from Babu and J-Rocc (Indeed, my copy of Soundbombing 2 is signed by J-Rocc B) ).

It's his crazy battle rhymes and humourous story-telling that I like about him. Like Isaacs, though, I also can't go his rhymes about celebritites that I have no interest in. I liked it better when he rapped about The Incredible Hulk and Inspector Gadget.
