Retro Gamer Anthology - Due 2 December

I've gone off RG, partly because of the wasting of space, partly for the predictable opinions (however, they must be commended for daring to criticise Turrican 3), or for the way in which the first few issues couldn't be read without seeing something to do with Matthew Smith... mostly for the way in which it covers news I've read about in forums weeks before (and I don't want to charge £6 to read the same thing twice). But yes, those lists are a real nuisance: "let's take up a few pages with a top ten for this...but let's not stop there; let's include a top ten for this, this, this and..." Zzz.

You may be interested to hear that gamesTM also has a retro collection due out on the 3rd December.

As far as I'm aware its a plush bookazine and will weigh in at £9.99. There's 260 bumper filled pages, so you're bound to find something you like in there.

So we have a new issue of Games tm due 2 December & the 'Retro' special the following day. Nice. <_<

I'm a sucker for buying these collections, even though I've already read all the content.

Yeah we really spoil you lot :(

Just out of interest, does anyone remember the means machines bookazine that come out when it was still part of C+VG?

It had early looks at a few megadrive games like ghouls and ghots, had the latest details on the Konix and was a bloody good read. Wish I still had it

I hope there's snow on the cover, a la Crash circa 1980 something.

EDIT

How about starting a thread over at the Games tm forum pimping your new mag ? Or shall I do it ? :(

I'll do it mate. I've managed to turn this thread about our competitor into talking about our new mag, so my work here is done <_<

The Complete Guide to Consoles?

Those are some of the very few things in life I always regret I threw out.

Think I still have it (looks at two cupboards full of magazines, top to bottom) - Think I'll look another day!

I know I do have the 'Complete Guide to C64' one!

Certainly is. I'll have a look when I next see the old fella.

I'm pretty sure I've also got a C&VG Yearbook with a specially designed Dragon's Lair wrap-round cover (1985-ish?) lurking in a cupboard somewhere. It's a weird combination of reviews, articles and type-in-yourself BASIC code - really odd!

I do. The Complete Guide to Consoles series of magazines that were released bi-annuallly were the genesis of my console gaming hobbby. Back in 1990 there wre no dedicated console magazines at all apart from Club Nintendo a very biased sales magazine and S (The Sega Mag) that were only availible on subsription. My Master System didn't have the S subscription form so I didn't get to buy this until they decided to put the magazine on sale in WH Smiths (Issue 5)

The first issue of CGTC with the yellow cover was the most detailed coverage of consoles ever availible at the time and only a friend of mine at school had a copy of it. I used to borrow it over the weekend quite a lot.

The magazine really opened my eyes to the weath of games that were availible and I remember buying California Games for my Master System based on the review inside. One of the best games ever made as well. It was also the first magazine to show in detail anything about the PC Engine. When you have a Master System and everyone else had C64 or Spectum you were on your own. Buying a game that you had to save up for was a very daunting task. £25 wasted if you brought a dud. No 10 day returns or reviews to help you. Life was hard for the feotus hardcore gamer like mayself.

I only managed to get my own copy of this last year from Ebay for a seriously stupid amount of money. It was an auction with several other magazines that I told the seller to re-sell or bin as I only wanted my personal holy grail.

Issue 2 with the red cover is (bar my Master System) the oldest Item in my games collection. Putting reviwes of Golden Axe and Super Shinobi side by side convinced me that I wanted a Megadrive more than anything else. I was 15 and earned maybe £15 a week but I was sure going to get a Megadrive.

I picked up the third issue on a Holiday in Blackpool with my mum and found that it contained the very first official advert for the PAL Megadrive. Also lot's of Megadrive games that I had to buy.

CGTC is the secone stage in evlolution of Mean Machines. First Mean Machines was a section in C&VG and then stood on it's own as CGTC before becomeing a fully fledged Mean Machines magazine. It's a shame that issue 1 of Mean Machines was on the whole a reprint of reviews that were in CGTC.

By the time issue 3 and then Complete Guide to Sega were released the magazine had achived it's goal and there were a weath of console magazines released monthly to replace it.

If any of you come across the magazine during your travells I recomend you pick them up. They are the MAXIMUM of thier day and the pre-cursor to Mean Machines.

I've still got the second one (red cover). It's a great read as you remember - the enthusiasm surrounding the coming 16bit revolution was so infectious - almost arcade perfect PCEngine (which still looked liked it would see official release) and Megadrive games...the first tantalising shots of the Snes...

I mislaid the first one - the 98% review of Ghouls n' Ghosts is something I badly wanna read again (t'was my favouritest game of all time for many, many years).

Something I've been wondering, especially given the re-use of the crash cover on the GamesTM compilation; does Oli Frey get any fee (even nominal) for the re-use of his paintings or is it all just 'with kind permission'?

I'm not sure if he gets a fee. He used to work on crash with our managing editor, so as far as I know it's with kind permission and we're the only ones who can reprint them.

Is there any chance of a feature on the Atari 800XL in the coming future? This was my first computer.
