Qazimod

Recommended Posts

I think...it's close...but I think that having got this for my birthday it has beaten the previous holder of the "qazimod's most chilled-out album" (the wonderful Melody AM) to second place. However, lemonjelly.ky also manages to mix in an uptempo tune or two in there (see Homage to Patagonia and Page One) so there's a bit of variety.

All of the tunes are accessible and quite cool in my opinion, but standouts have to be His Majesty King Raam (it's so relaxing, and I love the little organ (organ?) bit in it), Page One (because it's quite powerful and because it was one of the first tunes I heard by Lemonjelly), and Come (if only for that sweet harmonica bit midway through). I was taping the album on the first time I listened to it, so now I have something to listen to on the bus that isn't so mad. My favourite EP? No idea...maybe Midnight, but I also quite like The Staunton Lick on the Yellow EP. However, this matters little; it's a great little collection of songs and I'm so glad I made the decision to get it (even if it was a somewhat risky decision, as I didn't ask for any opinion's on the album before getting it, and I had only heard the one track before getting it. But it was well worth it; if you're a fan of Melody AM, or the more calming works of FSOL and Leftfield, you'll like this. Well, I may be wrong, and that's where your opinions come in. So what do you think?

I love Melody AM but the only Lemon Jelly i've heard is Space Walk which seemed to be completely different to Royksopp's offerings. Is Space Walk a good example of Lemon Jelly's musical style?

Sort of. I wouldn't say they're like Royksop either, apart from the fact that a lot of their music is chillout-y. Download Page One, King Raam, and In The Bath. And then buy everything they've released.

Yes. Not only are almost all of the songs brilliant but they are really well packaged too. Also go and see them live, the two times I have seen them they have been very good. However I'm not so keen on their new single really, it doesn't seem to have that spark to it although I do like the Ramblin Band remix on the DVD single. A lot.

Staunton Lick is a great song, first heard that on the Spaced soundtrack.

I discovered lemonjelly through Spaced, there used to be a really good fansite, can't remember the url, that had a track list of every tune used in the series. found out the name and went and bought the album the next day.

I heard 'His Majesty King Raam' about four years ago- it was a free MP3 kicking around somewhere. And it sounded like nothing else. Ky is great, and 'lost horizons' is maybe more accessible because of a lesser use of samples. I recommend them to anyone who likes a chillout.

I think they are a lot closer to Bent than Röyksopp. Certainly more quirky

Lemonjelly are one of the few bands that as soon as I heard one of their tracks, I had to have the albums. One of my mates had Lost Horizons on repeat at a party, and I just had to have it - got ky as well and I was amazed at how good it was. When the Staunton Lick came on, I had one of those moments - you know when you hear something that you vaguely recognise from somewhere, god knows where you heard it but it's been lurking somewhere in your brain, a subconscious soundtrack almost, because it's so damn good but try as you might you can't quite remember it.... then suddenly it's coming out of your stereo. A joyous moment.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hmm...just as I thought. The inlay of Lemonjelly.ky has all the tracks in the order that they are in on the CD EXCEPT for the fact that "A Tune for Jack" and "Homage To Patagonia" are in the wrong places: when Winamp got the track information it revealed the correct order. Mind you, given that the first comprehensible word in track 3 is "Patagonia", this should have been obvious to me...

EDIT: unless Winamp got it wrong...

I've gone and bought their new album and that EP collection after reading this thread and downoading a few tracks, and they are indeed great. Are there any other similar bands out there? The fact they're under "Dance" in the record shops means buying them's taken me into a secton of the store I wouldn't usually touch with a ten foot clown pole, so don't want to risk anything unheard.

Well, I first heard of Lemonjelly as some "if you like this" recommendation when I went looking for Royksopp's Melody AM...personally I think the two are quite different in style, but then again they are both inclusive, accessible chillout albums. Royksopp were also classified as dance, and personally I think the two albums complement each other wonderfully in terms of style, but I know that many will disagree...
