Mercenaries

Yep, everything I've read about this suggests we should be getting quietly excited.

Edge were rather disparaging of the code they played three issues ago, "As things stand, Mercenaries seems like a big mouth with rather ordinary trousers. We look forward to being proved wrong."

The new issue of OPS2 has a review (9) and playable demo (with no time out) of this game. Most impressive it is too. I think it's out February some time.

So that's anywhere from 6-9 in EDGE then, possibly.

It's a good sign, but OPS2 give out 8 and 9's to anything above average.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for this. Tell us a more detailed appraisal of your time with the demo.

The shooting looks to be well implemented (looks a lot like the Transformers engine to me), but the vehicles in the one vid I watched looked a bit stiff, especially the helicopter; it seemed to levitate perfectly still in the air. One to watch out for, mebbe.

Its not really a GTA game at all. Where did that come from?

Its a bloody war game.

I can only image that it comes from the fact that you can choose the missions, mercs and weapons yourself, and then proceed to complete the mission in any way you see fit.

Not saying that it's a good comparison, though.

i thought the xbox demo was good fun, shallow, but fun. the enemy AI seems to be of the 'stand and fight' variety (ie stays still and soaks up bullets) and in a combat orientated game, thats a big minus.

pandemic has definitely played Freedom Fighters: limited weapons load, Jesper Kyd a-like soundtrack, practically identical grenade throwing animation.

i dont really like the 'characterisation' they have given the main characters, they look pretty stupid and the Deck of Cards motiff is quite poor.

hopefully there will be an interesting multiplayer element to raise up the (expected average) single player game.

It's like GTA in the respect that the final game will have a fully featured world to explore. You'll make your way to your missions and perform them within the same world. Rather than just dumping you in front of your objective like the demo does, you'll have to go and get your missions assigned and then go and perform them.

In that respect, it's very much like GTA.

There's a flavour of it in the demo. You don't have to go straight into the base, you can instead go and wander around the nearby town, maiming innocents.

In that respect, it's also very much like GTA.

I enjoyed the demo. Lots of toys to play with, fun weapons. Looking forward to it.

Played the demo briefly today - was a little surprised at how this one is coming along. It's not a mind-blowing classic or anything, but it's definitely a solid shooter that's a lot of fun to play. The opening explosion which kicks off the level is one of the coolest sights I've seen in a while.

Anyone know if it uses the same engine as SW Battlefront? They feel very similar in the handling and the vehicles.

Well put that man. Although I still don't think it is the greatest comparison, if only for the reason that the world of GTA is a world without life or consequences. I'm taking it that the world of Mercenaries is most definitely a world of both, given that it will be more tightly governed.
