James Cameron Returns with Avatar

Panasonic have had a stupidly long exclusivity period for the proper version, they didn't pump that much into the development for the film to justify the length of time they managed to stop people who don't want to buy Panasonic hardware from owning it, still, didn't stop the 2D versions becoming the biggest selling BD release :P

Avatar Director James Cameron Gives Update on Sequels

Much has happened in the world of blockbuster movies since James Cameron's pioneering sci-fi adventure Avatar was released at the end of 2009, including an unstoppable wave of superhero films, an entire Hobbit trilogy, and the rejuvenation of the Star Wars saga. But Avatar remains the biggest box office draw of all time, and the long-promised sequels will soon be on their way. Now Cameron has provided an update as to their status.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cameron explained that the decision to shoot no fewer than three sequels back-to-back had meant a lengthy pre-production process. "I'm in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now," he said. "Just refining. That's in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We've been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings, and creatures are all pretty much [set]."

When asked if it had been an easier process to bring the next film to the screen after the complexity of the first one, Cameron admitted it hadn't. "No, because you have to challenge yourself," he said. "Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn't just some big fluke the first time. So we've got to deliver. I've created a nice rod for my own back, so they say."

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled for a December 2017 release. The first film earned $2.7 billion worldwide, making it the most successful movie ever made in terms of box office spend, ahead of Titanic which was also directed by Cameron..

In October, it was announced that Cameron's adaptation of the classic manga Battle Angel: Alita was moving ahead, with Sin City's Robert Rodriguez directing from Cameron's script. The film has been in development for many years, but Cameron's decision to make more Avatar movies had meant giving it to another director. "This project is near and dear to me, and there's nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins," Cameron said. "We're looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic."

Some news at least? And I thought it was going to be Dec 2016 damnit. :(

I watched it again last year some time and I really enjoyed it. More so in 2D. The big thing that lets it down is the shit pantomime baddie at the end.

I love Quiddich or what his name is. He's such a total badass. Running outside shooting without a mask, the coffee cup tree bombing, running through an exploding ship to a mesh. Great stuff.

The main problem I had with the first film was the outsider becomes a native plot element is pretty tired. That shouldn't be a problem in the sequels.

You mean the Guile-looking dude? He's awesome! Not seen it for years though.

Yeah, you've got to wonder if anyone still cares about Avatar. It doesn't really seem to have caught on in popular culture.

I haven't even been bothered to watch it again since first time at cinema and I have a 3d TV now and still not fussed. How quick has time gone though!

Will anyone really be fussed 9 years later on from the first film? Let alone 3 more sequels.

I'm pretty sure that a number of people will still know about Avatar, the highest grossing film of all time, in 2017 and beyond.

I know what you mean, but I doubt it will be the highest grossing film of all time by early 2016 let alone 2017.

Considering the film that James Cameron made back in 1997 is still the 2nd highest grossing film of all time, I wouldn't be surprised if only James Cameron can beat James Cameron. It's not as if everybody else hasn't spent as much money or more as he did on making that film trying to replicate its success...

Its easy to assume Star Wars will beat it because, well, it's Star Wars. But then you look at the historical performance of Star Wars movies and that's not necessarily the case. And then you look at the other top grossing movies and realise there isn't really a formula.

The positions of both Age Of Ultron and Furious 7 are a little strange. Titanic ran at cinemas for about 10 years and got massive repeat business, bust was assumed to be a flop before it.

Movies are weird.

But, the core question of whether anyone would give a shit about Avatar so many years after release is kinda answered by Jurassic World. The answer is almost certainly a resounding yes.

It's really not that weird. When I went to see Titanic it was £3.70 to get in in the West End. When I went to see FF7 it was £14 with the glasses in my local flea pit.

For anybody thinking Star Wars has a chance to go for the GOAT in global box office, you might want to pray that JJ Abrams has done what George Lucas couldn't, make it into something with massive non-American appeal. It's the same problem Batman has and why it stalled barely pass the $1 Billion mark, twice.

I suppose it depends on how much Avatar's box office was driven by the super 3D hype and how much goodwill it actually retains?

Obviously it will look spectacular - but the Na'vi are no dinosaurs?

I've also not watched it in full since the original release – I didn't think there was much there that we haven't seen a hundred times over, just than some very lovely effects and typically Cameron futuristic industrial design. I'd still prefer to watch Dances with Wolves any day of the week, and don't really have any desire to see a sequel (or 3).

Like someone else said, I don't think it has had any cultural impact whatsoever? I've never seen any of my nieces or nephews with Avatar toys or anything like that. I wouldn't wager on a sequel earning any where near what the original did, but I'm probably wrong and people will just lap up some more nice visuals regardless of the dull husk of a story..

Those animatronics are breathtaking though – so I suppose some good has come of it all!
