James Cameron Returns with Avatar

The shot of the helicopter thing landing in the forest looked incredible, and it only looks CGI because we know it's CGI. The characters look much more solid than anything in the Star Wars prequels.

I think the best CGI blends in seamlessly with the real stuff, regardless of whether you know that it's CGI or not. The environments in this look great, and quite realistic to my eyes, which only makes the blue guys and other creatures stand out more. Not that they are terrible by any means, but I was expecting to be bowled over when, to me, it doesn't look any better than the best stuff that's already out there.

Either way, you can only really judge how good it is when you see the actual film. If it immerses you enough so you forget you're looking at something that isn't really there, then it's done its job. A 2-minute trailer can't really convey that.

I have just watched the 1080p trailer again a few times though, replaying sections over and over and it really does look incredible. The more I watch it, the more amazing it looks, and the more interested I'm getting. I truly believe this will be a huge step forward for CGI worlds. The movements of the characters were far more believable than any others I've seen, which all tend to be over-animated and a bit crap-looking. There were a few comical-looking sections in the trailer, but hopefully they'll look better in the context of the film (and some bits were in slow-motion, which wouldn't help). In general, they all looked very solid. Just check out this fella:

I'm so gutted I won't be seeing the preview tomorrow :D

I hope to god he hasn't but from the teaser, it looks like James Cameron has lost it. The CGI looks jarring, and not the super-seamless-you-cant-tell-it's-CGI we've been told it was, The Alien designs are fucking terrible. Compare District 9 to these Jar Jar relatives. Stan Winston will be rolling in his grave.... STILL, it is just a teaser, i hope the feature is good and the 3D is nice...but yeah, i think Cameron spent to much time making weird ass sea movies after Titanic when he should've got on with True Lies 2 :D

sorry i had my hype expectation on overload for this trailer which probably didn't help. But this guy made the Terminator! Aliens! True Lies! Holy shit!

Im confused still. Can anyone tell me which bits are CGI and which aren't. Obviously the Navi are CG, but are you guys saying the human characters are too?

The humans are not CGI, presumably they'll employ CGI doubles for them in some of the action scenes as per every blockbuster. Although that shot of Sam Worthington rolling down the ramp looks plain odd.

Yeah, that was the bit that made me think, they must be CGI at some points. HMMM.

The footage that Aint It Cool described out of Comic-Con was all CGI - they decscribed at lenght the human character with the scars that we see in the trailer and how impressive it was to see him walking, talking etc in a recognisable enviroment so I thought that the space ship bits were all CGI too - now some fucking smelly jobsworth in my office saying some of it's live action??

:)

Actually, I'm not bothered. The trailer looked shit at work but when I watche dit last night with the music and at 1080 it was pretty spectacular.

It's still Dances With Wolves in space though.

What's his face was talking about this on BBC news last night, he was saying the 3D is done well in the sense it isn't all things waving in your face and a bit more subtle.

It does look lovely, but so often labours of love by directors do turn out rubbish. We'll see.

I've uploaded a PS3-compatible 1080p version here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=D2VGTATW. It's much better in 1080p on a big screen.

Thanks for this.

Watched it earlier on the PS3 in 720p and it looks amazing, not sure if it's going to the ground breaking movie that many thought/said it would be...but it does look amazing and the story seems to be fairly interesting as well. (maybe I'm going mad, but wasn't there a movie with a similar storyline released earlier this year/last year? It was a full CG movie.)

Although I've only watched this trailer once (the Apple site worked fine for me yesterday), I think it looks fantastic. To say it doesn't look as good as Jurassic Park, as someone suggested earlier, seems ridiculous.

The movements of the characters were far more believable than any others I've seen, which all tend to be over-animated and a bit crap-looking.

For me, although CG effects these days generally look pretty much perfect in still frames (the problem of the CG elements looking washed out and shadow-less compared to the surrounding photographic elements happens much less often than it used to), it's usually the movement that lets CG people down, with motions too quick and smooth, like the animators are trying to cram in every storyboarded motion into as short a shot as possible.

But in this case, based on that one viewing the movements looked fine. Yes, you can tell the Na'avi are a special effect, but I think that's mainly because of their bright colour rather than their movements.
