Hmmm, what's supposed to be so special about it then? Effects-wise it looks pretty average from that trailer... The blue dudes (which I presume are the avatars?) look worse than Gollum.

The na'vi's faces looked a bit cartoonish, and the monsters look like all CGI monsters - a bit silly and obviously CGI. I'm sure it'll still be a blast coming from Cameron, but I don't think we're going to get this big evolution in cinema that's being touted.

I like the trailer a lot, the environments especially and I'm a sucker for these nature versus technology kinda stories, but I agree that it isn't mind blowing footage. I'd love to compare it to the IMAX experience, the way it's meant to be seen, but I had no luck with my ticket. <_<

I don't think I can face another 3D film. The sooner that fad dies the better. The images is half as bright and just looks wrong in a head hurting\distracting way. I think the stereo is generally massively exaggerated which messes with any sense of scale. In real life you only really need stereo vision for fairly close up stuff.

Hey there.

Looks closer to the "photoreal" of the star wars prequels than it does the photo real of District 9. I'm sure 3d will add a lot. And let's face it. It's not that great a trailer is it? In regards to the construction of it.

But I still have faith.

It's James Cameron for fucks sake. I can't wait to see the guy do his thing on such an epic scale.

Despin out.

Looking at it again, the cgi doesn't even look as good as Jurassic Park, and that's years old.

As long as the story's decent I'll love it, but I can't say i'm in any way impressed by the visuals.

Star Wars came into my mind too. I don't think it looking like an animation is necessarily a problem (because that's exactly what it is by the looks of it). It just seems a little unexpected. I've only seen a cam version of District 9 but that definitely looked very real to me.

Everything I've ever seen about this picture looks like total shit. If James Cameron wasn't involved, I'm sure it would be laughed out of ShoWest etc. What's the hook? It doesn't seem to have one, outside of the fact that Cameron is directing and it took a lot of time and money to make. That paid off with Titanic but there's no way this will be a similar success, the film has been pitched totally wrong and will certainly bow out with less than Transformers 2's takings. The only people promoting it as a major event are the film makers and some shakey "journalists". I doubt very much this is going to hit very hard.

Are peope writing Cameron off again? I remember the same happening before Titanic and we all know how that ended up...

Not saying it will do that kind of business (no movie ever will perhaps), but I predict this will be pretty big nonetheless.

I really like the look of it. I agree that it's strongly reminiscent of a Final Fantasy cutscene and hard to describe as 'real'. Then again it's been said many times that you have to see it in 3D for it to be truly convincing so I'm reserving judgement.

The music is fantasic though and I love the way that dialogue is kept to a minimum.

Hey there.

Exactly.

In the last 20 years Cameron has made four movies that at the time were the most expensive movies in the history of cinema. Two of them made a bunch of money. One of them made more money than any other movie ever in the history of cinema.. By like twice as much almost.

This would be number 4.. Seems crazy to write him off so quickly.

Despin out.

lovely environments in the trailer, but it still looks like CG, especially the avatars - their faces and expressions look almost disney-like..

...I really don't like the avatars at all... in fact i'll go as far as to say the actual avatar characters look like some 3rd rate deviantart.com fantasy fanart brought to life.

Isn't the point though that your 'Avatar' is your computer generated self?

I'm just guessing, I've not really been following the prgress of this but it would explain why it all looks a bit, I dunno, Final Fantasy.

Ah right - so, the CG in the movie is so advanced that they had to downgrade the avatars to look like standard CG? makes sense now.

<_<

(that screenshot looks like a 3dsmax 8 tutorial book cover... :D )

I don't think so. I thought your 'Avatar' was an alien that you could thought control somehow. I think they're supposed to look real.

Correct. Worthington is a paralysed Marine who transfers his conciousness to an "Avatar" - a cloned Naa'vi alien body so that he can scamper about on their homeworld and get up BAD THINGS ON THE ORDER OF THE HUMANS. But he ends up being marked out as The Chosen One and learns to respect the native people yadda yadda yadda..

Devin at Chud called in Dances With Wolves in space and I trust his judgement.

Consider my eyeballs most definately not fucked this summer.
