Evil Dead Remake!

Goose

Recommended Posts

Saw this the other night. Pacing felt a bit off. You'd get a real violent bit, then a quiet bit, then a violent bit etc. But it felt really regimented and uniform for some reason (the soundtrack was the same). I got no sense that things seemed to be escalating enough. It only came back to life for the ending, when...

Mia became non-deadite again and was running around the cabin etc. Her wide eyes and facial expressions at some points were very Ash-like.

Still, it could have been a lot worse. At least there was plenty of gore.

3/5

I was massively looking forward to this, I should really know better. It was only ever going to be one of two things, amazing or awful, unfortunately (and probably much less surprisingly) it was the latter. Following on from a movie which was the standout in its generation, its a shame that this is just to typical of bland modern horror, and as a result is instantly forgettable amongst the masses. Another of my most anticipated movies ends up being dire.

I found it awful too, the problem with making a 'serious' version is that it highlights all the goofiness which made the original funny and part of its charm.

Like for example if I found a book with covered in barb wire, made up of skin and then had pages covered in blood with evil carvings I would run a mile.

Really? I think most people would be tweeting pictures of it and stuff.

Well if the cast were teenagers then yeah but they were young adults. Regardless, its just reminds me how goofy the original and fun it was, this was just bleh.

I thought this was good. I'm a big fan of the original, this had a different tone, but was still a lot of fun and had some tense and scary sequences. One of the few films to use gore effectively without tipping over into offensiveness like so many modern horrors do.

Yeah, I was surprised by how gory it got by the end. It's been a long time since I've seen in a film in the cinema like that, felt like a (good) throwback to the days of video nasties. I liked it a lot- the characters maybe could have been a bit more memorable, but it felt like a good Evil Dead movie to me and I'm happy to see where they go next. I mean, it's an Evil Dead without Bruce Campbell (well, y'know what I mean..) so it was always going to be up against it, so I was pleasantly surprised and once or twice even felt like throwing up into my popcorn.

I didn't even think the original two where that great - granted I didn't watch them till the early 2000s but they certainly where never classics to me. I think they were a product of their time but can appreciate they were somewhat original back then.

I thought it was actually impossible to not like Evil Dead 2 it's the perfect comedy horror.

The film itself was alright I suppose, as in the set-pieces, effects and general nasty tone were well-judged. But I don't think I've ever seen a movie with such boring, bland, forgettable non-characters in all my life. Obviously the characterization in a gore-fest like this is usually minimal, but here it was fucking was non-existent. Like nothing. Not a single notable bit of dialogue or interaction. I don't know what I was expecting. Even their faces were boring. Apart from getting injured and killed in imaginative and joyously bloody ways, they didn't say or do anything exciting, funny, clever or memorable in at any way whatsoever.

To be fair you were probably expecting Evil Dead, which had a very memorable character and quotable dialogue.

I can agree with that. As much as I liked the movie, the characters were the blandest fucks on the planet.

Its been a while since I have seen. I remember Evil Dead 2 being more of a comedy, i just wasn't quite sure on the film. I also watched Army of the dead recently for the second time and although there were some funny bits, i just couldnt get into it. It didn't help i had drunk a lot of vodka before hand though..

AoD is good but Meh is right; it really hasn't aged well and some of the slapstick humour is wide of the mark when you remove those rose tinted glasses. Evil Dead 2 is all kinds of amaze, though.

Rob:[To Barry]Just come on. What would it mean to you, that sentence: I haven't seen Evil Dead II yet?

Barry: Well, to me it would mean that you're a liar. You've seen it twice. Once with Laura -oops- and once with me and Dick, remember? We had that conversation about the guy making Beretta shotgun ammo off-screen in the 14th century.

Rob: Right, all right. But let's just say that I hadn't seen it and I said to you, "I haven't seen Evil Dead II yet", what would you think?

Barry: I'd think that you're a cinematic idiot and I'd feel sorry for you.

Rob: All right. But from that one sentence, would you think that I was going to see it?

Barry: I'm sorry, Rob. I'm struggling here. You're asking me what would I think if you told me you hadn't seen a film that you have already seen. What am I supposed to say?

Rob: Just listen to me. If I said to you-

Barry: "I haven't seen Evil Dead II yet", yes.

Rob: Would you get the impression that I really wanted to see it?

Barry: Oh, uh, well you couldn't have been desperate to see it, otherwise you'd have already gone.

Rob: Right, I'm not gonna see that movie.

Barry:[pause] But the word "yet". Yeah, you know what? I'd get the impression that you wanted to see it otherwise you'd have said you didn't wanna go.

Rob: But in your opinion, would I definitely go?

Barry: How the fuck am I supposed to know?! Probably!

Rob: Why?

Barry: Because it's a brilliant film. It's so funny, and violent, and the soundtrack kicks fucking ass. I never thought I'd say this, but can I go work now?

Saw this over the weekend, it was pretty good, had a nice (ie horrible) atmosphere and was quite nicely paced. Some of the camerawork was totally Evil Dead. As for the post-credits scene, I've no idea what the point was.

That face when she's whispering shit like "... there is... something in the cabin... with us..." really freaked me the fuck out. Great casting.

Great casting as she seemed to become Brad Dourif for the scene.

I watched it again the other day and think it's easily the best remake/reboot of the recent 80s/90s remakes. I think if it was a new franchise and the originals didn't exist it would a really great horror film. I do think it's good but it's difficult to take me away from the love I have for the originals and BC. I do think they did a pretty good job of making it different enough though.

At least they went 18 with it and didn't hold back on the gore and blood.

My only gripe is that the Deadite (or Abomination as they call them in this) at the end wasn't demon enough. It just a normal girl with no lady parts and evil looking eyes. Kind of a bit meh for a final showdown.
