Evil Dead Remake!

Evil Dead 2 was a loose remake of the original Evil Dead with more slapstick and elements of comedy typical of Raimi's output. Army of Darkness then goes further into comedy stylings and throws more action into the mix but the original Evil Dead is actually a lot closer to an out and out horror (To answer your original question!)

Ah. I guess I am thinking of ED2. Shame really. I'd love to see a proper horror-comedy again.

The next person who states Evil Dead was a comedy gets a slap with my chainsawed off stump. Anyway think I preferred the first trailer but cannot wait for this film.

There are smudges of comedy in the first one "we can't dismember Shelley, she's our friend" for example but when your 9yrs old the original is nightmare inducing unrelenting Terror.

Although Evil Dead is definitely more straight than Evil Dead 2, as the film progressed, you could see the seeds of it's comedy remake already forming. The camera angles get more wacky, and it does become less scary.

Looking forward to this now, I think, although I have no friends who seem to genuinely enjoy horror in the same way as me, so doubt I'll get to the pictures to see it (I hate going alone).

I think that must depend a lot on your sense of humour. At a special cinema screening about 5 years ago the room was filled with laughter much of the way through. I suppose maybe its less hahaha and more wh ha ha hooah.

I first watched it when I was thirteen, just before it got banned. It wasn't funny.

More balls in this poster than the one cassidy liked.

It's win win really. I can't imagine it cost much to make and it has the Evil Dead name to trade on. Not to mention the R rated trailer had enough gore for most horror fans. Even if it only has one good weekend, it's all it will need.

Plus, commisioning a script before a film is out shows the public that the studio think the film is good and will do well enough to already warrant getting underway on a sequel. If the film doesn't, they can quietly shelf the treatment/script, if they had one. They did similar with Oz the great and powerful - announced work on a sequel was underway on Thursday.

Might be worth giving it a miss - Harry Knowles loved it. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/61372

You know what to expect with his reviews. But what was refreshing to hear is that the film is mostly practical effects, no cgi blood or gore. Knowles' story about the screening and qa after, I could have done without. The same with the one sentence paragraphs and what not.

From Scott Mendelson's Review -

This film has some great work going on, it knows it, and it flaunts it every chance it gets. So many great prosthetics and genuine looking terror floods the film. For someone who loves stuff like that, it was greatly appreciated. There is unfortunately one brief use of noticeably poor CGI, but it’s early on. I’m actually looking forward to seeing the Unrated cut when it hits Blu-Ray. This film will put smiles on horror fans’ faces and keep the hands planted over the eyes of the casual filmgoer.

Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead delivers an eventful rendition on an original classic. The new Evil Dead gives more depth and takes the story to some new, welcome places. It’s definitely a worthy remake and a nice introduction for younger people to this legendary cult series. This is definitely a movie to see with a packed late night weekend crowd on opening weekend. Even if you’re desensitized to gore, you’ll appreciate the practical work done and squeamish cries from the people sitting in the row behind you. This film isn't ashamed of the genre its in and makes no apologies for it. Believe the chainsaw buzz, this film is bloody fun!

I saw this a few weeks ago, and it was really good - the start feels like it's going to be a bit generic modern horror remake-ey, but it rapidly becomes properly terrifyingly gory and intense. Bits of it made me feel genuinely a bit ill.

Did you stay until after the credits? There's that many conflicting reports about the after-credits scene, or if there even is one, I'm curious to what was at your showing.

Dunno, I did one as soon as it finished. I didn't see anyone hanging around for a post-credits scene, so maybe word hadn't gotten around then.

I've read in a number of place that there is an after scenes credit, a very short one.

MAJOR SPOILERS

During the end credits, audio is heard from the original film, of Professor Raymond Knowby telling about the Naturom Demonto and seeing dark shadows in the woods that he "resurrected" and are calling for him. Then, in a brief post-credits scene, an older Ash Williams recites his iconic line from the original films, "Groovy," and turns to the audience.

Which would make sense with what is being planned -

Two seperate sequels - an Evil Dead 2 and an Army of Darkness 2, with the idea that both timelines/characters will then merge into one Evil Dead3/Army of Darkness movie

Every time a trailer comes on TV i keep covering my ears and shouting like a mental to avoid spoilers. Is it Tuesday yet?? :)

I've got so much love for the originals and this looks wonderful, it's the most exited I've been about a trip to the cinema since "The Raid". Also the news that Raimi is writing Army of Darkness 2... LOVE IT!
