Hmm, just got the

Dark Beam after my first fight with Dark Samus. Excellent stuff.
Oh and I now have four energy tanks already. Most satisfying being the one in the circular morph ball room after doing the double bomb jump and the finding the hidden passage. Nice.

Really enjoying it so far.

Graphically, it's just stupendous. the level of detail in the background, that big room with the wind generators for the pirates in, the colours in that room before the big oval place with the Shriekbats in... It's all so fucking lovely. It's so much a step above Prime 1 that it hurts!

.::: A mate of mine dropped by yesterday, after demoing Echoes for sme time, we put up HALO 2. He remained silent for a while and then said... "HALO 2 really looks shit compared to Metroid eh?"

Design and graphicwise, Echoes really is miles ahead of anything else out there.

Finally got back off of holiday yesterday (i've never looked forward to coming home so much) and my copy was waiting for me.

1st impressions? Its fucking great and looks the sex. I can't wait to have a really long session with it over the weekend.

I agree with everyone about the menu system being shit though.

Gamecentral absolutely tore this to pieces this morning. they gave it a reasonable score but spent the whole review claiming it was little more than a poor copy of the original without actually telling us what was so wrong with it.

I expected this game to get something of a kicking in the review stakes. thankfully I can say with some confidence that reviews don't appear to reflect the quality of the game anymore and come tomorrow I'm going to be absolutely lovin' it based on what those who actually own and have played the retail game have said ;)

You're treading on dangerous ground there mate ;)

.::: Dangerous? Only for those with no eyes. Really, just like HALO was soulless compared to Prime, so HALO 2 is just a collection of LEGO-buildings in comparison to Echoes. The difference is just there.

Also that mate of mine is probably the biggest Xbox fan I know. ;)

Indeed, a bizarre review to be honest. To me the overall gist seemed to be: This game is rubbish because it is a lot like the last one, only a bit different. 8/10.

I'm not usually left feeling ill after a GC review, as they usually do a good job, but this morning I honestly had trouble understanding what it was they were trying to communicate. ;)

.::: It seems there really are two kind of reviews out there... I'm still polishing my own piece about it. But 'm stuck at which angle to take it, either from a Prime veteran or a Prime virgin...

Probably a bit of both in the end.

Why don't you try reviewing it from the "damn good game" perspective ;)

Graphically, Halo isn't *that* impressive. There are nice bits and, in general, it feels more "open" than Metroid... however, the attention to detail in Prime was stunning and, from all accounts, this one raises it even higher.

Don't think there's anything on the consoles to touch it tbh.

Errrr, right.

Coming from a huge Metroid Prime fan, you understand. But also a huge Halo fan. Why people constantly have to bemoan one while venerating the other is beyond me. They are both, and continue to be excellent games which are very far apart in their look and feel. Of course, its just an opnion I disagree with.

Hopefully that'll be the last time I feel the need to say that.

.::: Not criticising the game, mind. Just the graphics. But HALO's smooth surroundings in both parts do make it a lot more sterile in my experience. Both may have had the same amount of work in them, but the Primes are simply more alive.

Arguably, but Halo is a giant machine and Prime is a world. Logically Prime is more alive than Halo. My point was that they both do things the other does not, making both essential.

I find it interesting that you used the word ''souless'' to describe Halo's graphics. I found some of Halo's vistas and its general scale almost religious in their awe-inspiring effect. Got soul?

Anyway.

I'm a massive Metroid fan, and so far the only rubbish game is Metroid 2, which I couldnt complete as it wasnt really a Metroid game in my eyes. Halo and Halo 2 are FPS's, that also tell a cracking story. Metroid games are all about exploration, and obtaining new power ups. It may now look and act like a FPS, but its still a collect-em-up/exploration game. They are two very different game types.

Graphically, I'd say Metroid Prime+Echoes looks far prettier to the eye, but storywise, I'd have to say Halo 1 did a better job over Metroid Prime. I enjoyed them both immensely, and replayed both a lot, but Halo won out in the replayability stakes, due more than anything to co-op.

I hope Echoes plot is stronger than the first's, but I'll still play it to death as its a Metroid game at heart.

.::: Hmm, I've never experienced HALO in that light. It was all too bland for me... Sterile and soulless are words I've linked to the games from the start. Graphically. But hey we could go on forever about that I guess. :P

Replayability and story are arguably better in the HALOs, although I still replay Metroids for speed and completion rates (note that I'm not a sequence breaker, but heavily interested in the techniques possible).

The thing with MP/E's and Halo 1/2's graphics is that they are both trying to convey different things. Metroids are all about the small detail, the little things. It's all quite enclosed and thus more detail is spend on making that small area impressive. Halo's are done with much broader strokes. The massice wide open areas, the huge draw distances, the grand architectural designs etc. It's a completely different graphical style. It seems to me an odd thing to compare either game for either gameplay or grpahics when they are both trying to achieve different things.

This is probably the filthiest thing I've read all day. We all knew you loved Metroid, but not in that way.

Someone get the man a cold shower.

:)

PS I'll probably be working myself up into a frenzy with this game tomorrow myself. All inuendos nitendo'd*

There don't seem to be many at the moment though. :(

It's worse when you just want to explore for a bit.

.::: Don't you dare criticise respawning enemies later on! :)

But seriously, move on to following rooms and kill off more enemies, or hit the black knive-Ing pillars for more items. That should do the trick.

Mine was dispatched early this morning, so hopefully I'll be HAPPILY scanning the shit out of everything tomorrow.

Mine was despatched, too :) from Play.com though, so delivery tomorrow seems unlikely :(

And if anybody doesn't like the scanning- DON'T FUCKING SCAN THEN! A few things in the first game (switches etc) needed scanning every now and then, but you can get away with missing out scanning loads of other things. I never bothered scanning anything that wasn't necessary- I didn't want to, so why bother?
