Official Metroid Prime 2 Thread

My copy arrived on Saturday, which coincided with getting the Xbox back from Yod@ (finally allowing me to play Halo 2). My weekend (and my son's) has been split 50/50 between the two, and I'm hard pressed to say which I've enjoyed more. Probably Halo 2, but only by the narrowest of margins. They're both fantastic games.

9/10 each, I'd say.

Harder than the first one?

Well, MP was by far the hardest game I have ever played, so I'll be passing on this one.

What is it with the GC and difficulty level in games. I have only completed one game on the GC (Eternal Darkness), must have done 50 on the PS2 and Xbox combined.

Is the GC the "hardcore" console?

I really don't understand the difficylty people have with MP, I really don't, and I'm not some kind of uber-l33t gamer either, with the exception of certain bosses I thought it was a walk in the park.

Viewtiful Joe, Ikaruga and Halo legendary, those are hard games.

Yeah, but I couldn't get past the sodding Phazon Mines on Hard. Kept running out of energy when I hit those Yellow Pirates. Bastards! Normal though was a nice challenge, but nothing impossible.

.::: *huff puff* For your sakes I hope you've brushed up on Super Monkey Ball lately and know how to move a sphere. Retro kind of raped the usual stuff you do with the morph ball. In a good way. It gives you an uberfrustrating boss, but again, marvellous.

I'm at 63% with about 12 hours on the clock (although I did a lot of walking around to double check some texts I needed).

The following is a gameflow spoiler, which has been mentioned by a lot of other sources as well;

Click For Spoiler
You have three temples with each 3 keys to find, this is probably the biggest progress-lock in the game, although crucially picking each one up implies it's a Dark Key instead of a emple specific one, with a bit of luck this will allow for some awesome sequence-breakers.

After those 9 keys though, you need to collect another 9 keys for what is to be the final stretch (just like Prime's artifacts and Wind Waker's Triforce), I've already found two of them by accident but I think it's going to annoy some people.

Oh, I got the Echo Visor which makes me feel like a walking sub. :P

And Sanctuary Fortress is truly incredible... It's by far the most alien environment ever in a Metroid. I remember a friend/colleague once saying that he amrvelled at Prime's architecture because eveyrthing must have consciously placed in those rooms. Thinking back of that, Anctuary Fortress suddenly becomes a piece of art. Not everyone might like the colors but the architecture and looks of it is overwhelming to say the least.

Overall spoiler;

Fighting Dark Samus for the second time was terrific! It's such an intense one-on-one. And now I need to get me the most perverted attack in the history of videogames. Screw it baby!

And for some reason, I actually pity the Space Pirates. :unsure:

.::: Well they are just patterns. This is Metroid after all, not Generic FPS #12936. It's that the patterns you need to attack them are rather clever and very varied. I've only encountered 2 or 3 enemies which actually were color-coded like the Troopers in Prime and could switch that, and a few which could only be hit by a certain beam. There are some very fun ones amonst them.

But AI? About as much as the other Metroids have.

Well, I haven't really played Metroid Prime so I can't say anything about the difficulty, but I did play Ninja Gaiden and Halo (2) on legendary. They're pretty damn hard too :unsure:

I think every system has its easy and extremely difficult games. I don't think the GameCube has more difficult games than the PS2 and/or Xbox.

Watching the video of a Space Pirate being possessed by an Ing, you could feel sorry for it. It looks like it's in such pain. Still, it IS trying to kill you, so shove a Power Bomb up its arse and run.

.::: Just wait until you scan a certain log. :D I was laughing out loud at that and immediately felt sorry for them afterwards. :(

No such compassion for the Ing though. They ARE monsters.

Seems all good to me so far, i've had it on for about 2 and a half hours yet it says my time is only 1:00, it must be time walking around rather than looking at menus/having it paused etc etc.

I'm moving back to Paper Mario temporarily but looking forward to putting in some hours on this later in the week :o

Where you up to fella?

Not very far. Just met the luminoth. Already feels much darker in tone than Prime and the locales are just lovely. Oh, just got my first energy upgrade. I feel so vulnerable with only one lot of energy.

Yep, feels like exactly what I was wanting from it.

I'm just a little further on from you and yeah it's very atmospheric. the locations are wonderful. The first boss (if it was a boss) i found very easy. Believe me i'm no great games player. Maybe i was lucky but i almost did it first go and second time had about 80 energy. I expect it to get a lot harder mind, judging from people's comments. Anyway, so far it's very good, the only thing is my week is fully booked so i could be playing from 1 to 3 in the morning and having bleary eyes at work :lol:

.::: I'm fully tooled up, with only expansions to find. Almost ready for the final assault then.

I didn't think it was possible, but that one boss-fight I was talking about seems to have been surpassed... Holy mother of God... Samus' final pose after that fight EXACTLY describes how you feel at that moment. I actually cheered and celebrated the victory!

Thing is, it feels SO iunfair when you start that battle, and then it suddenly clicks and you actually get skilled in how to approach the boss. It's not luck, it's pure proficiency of the player. And damn does it feel good when you're winning.

I'm now VERY curious as to what EDGE got to play to give it an [8], indeed my objections as it being not a true sequel to the series still stands, but the mixture Retro concocted is still [9] worthy.

Something tells me EDGE got suckered into playing that same 16% demo I played earlier for review as well....

Screw Attack usage spoiler;

Click For Spoiler
For those fiddling with the Screw Attack; be sure to press B again IMMEDIATELY after pressing B for the third time. If you wait to long you'll automatically drop. And you don't want to drop in those areas. :lol:

For those with more Metroid experience, the Screw Attack uses the same timing as the Space Jump timing in Super Metroid, NOT those out of Fusion/Zero Mission (meaning you'll have to jump again a split-second after reaching your jump-apex).

Using it as a weapon seems very unlikely. Also you can't control direction with the Screw Attack, so, as predicted, you can only move forward and up/down with it.

Note to sequence-breakers; Screw Attacking ANY wall will result in a small walljump. Tempting...

Now to brace myself for the final stretch. I'll report back, when I'm done.

PS: Abbreviating the Kinetic Orb Cannon seems to be pretty rude, especially since you need to be a ball to use it. :D

PPS: My stats;

Samus 1 | Agon Wastes 74% | Elapsed 13:55 | Scans 81% | Items 74%

I haven't got the review to hand, but I don't remember Edge mentioning the screw attack or wall jumping at all.
