Chewylegs
I was just wondering whether anyone has been watching this for the last few weeks. I reckon it is a very good documentary about something that I'm not particularly interested in. The Muhammad Ali hour last night was a bit of an eye opener. I suggest anyone who has nothing better to do on a sunday night to check it out. Its very very good. Anybody watched it, any thoughts?

The Grand Pursuivant
I can't stand boxing normally, but these are so well done I'm compelled to watch then. The history behind Joe Lewis is fascinating. I used to think he was just some boxer.
Chewylegs
It's fucking brilliant, isn't it? Damn right. loved everyone so far. Sugar Ray Robinson was unbelievable fighter. His bouts with Jake Lamota were incredible. Boxing seems so mundane now compared to the 40s and 50s. I did like the fact they showed how it all started with Bare nuckle fighting in the late 1800s. Anything goes, fight till one of you can't go on. Shit, they were animals back then. Damn entertaining programme. Scarily i find myself watching Top Gear, The Fight, Have I got News For You and then Match of The Day 2. BBC2 all the way on a sunday!

ScouserInExile
After watching this Sunday's about the Thriller in Manilla, my opinion of Muhammed Ali has changed a bit. I was really surprised by the openly racist ways in which he talked about Joe Frazer. Not only did he keep calling him a gorilla, he also called him an Uncle Tom on a few occasions. No wonder Frazer was so wound up. And I was totally amazed that a guy who was blind in one eye and couldn't straighten his left arm could be heavyweight champion of the world... Badger
I watched everything up until the Muhammed Ali one...(Already got the film documentary about it). Sugar Ray and Joe Louis were very enlightening programmes... It still amazes me what people went through.....and how the Government was willing to set up a prominent black sportsman because he was a threat to their way of life.... hughes
His charisma, skill and tragedy ensure Ali is a legend, but IMO he's a bit of a gobshite. The NOI were basically a black KKK. Plus hearing on the programme that Frazer helped Ali on numerous occasions financially beforehand made him seem even more of a knobber. Also, see that guy getting hit 17 times in 5 seconds? Wooft that was fucking brutal.
Chewylegs
Also, see that guy getting hit 17 times in 5 seconds? Wooft that was fucking brutal. God yeah and the reasons why the ref wouldn't stop it made you think some people involved in the sport really don't give a toss about the people in the ring.! Scary shit....but a good series. ukdazs
Is it on again on Sunday? I really enjoyed last Sundays episode. I'd love to see one about Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard, Eubank and Benn or Tyson/Holyfield/Lewis. Probably not classics in the greater scheme of things but they certainly made an impression at the time.

I'd love to see one about Marvin Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard, Eubank and Benn or Tyson/Holyfield/Lewis. Probably not classics in the greater scheme of things but they certainly made an impression at the time. It's moe about events that have changed boxing, rather than just great fights / rivalries. The one about the first black heavyweight champion was really good as well. Also, see that guy getting hit 17 times in 5 seconds? Wooft that was fucking brutal. And fatal. the guy was pretty much dead on his feet from the first punch and was only proped up by the ropes. The guy who did the killing said that he didn't know he was hurt, otherwise he would have stopped. that seemed a bit like bullshit to me, you could see how bad he was straight away, the guy may as well have stamped on his head when he went down.
