The Beer Thread

I'm now comfortable enough with my own masculinity to only drink wine when out, so rarely have lager anymore. But if I do, it's either Asahi or Budvar. There's one Belgian bar in the centre of Melbourne that sells my favourite beer:

But generally, I like most Asian or (non-UK) European lagers. For a country that produces such great wines, your typical Aussie bloke would never touch the stuff, sticking to the local beer. Which, without exception, regardless of where it's from or how it's brewed, is disgusting. VB, Carlton, Fosters, Tooheys... all rank.

I've never tried it but I'm going to, just for that name alone.

I went to Belgo's some time ago and was baffled by the wide choice of beers I'd never heard of. The only way I managed to choose was to go for one with an interesting name.

It could only be - Slag pils.

Slaaaaaaaaaaaaag! Pretty decent, as I remember.

Super Bock from Portugal. Tesco's stock it, but not Super Bock green (lime) or Super Bock Tango (redcurrant). One of the finest lagers known to man.

Are you mental?

I go to Portugal every year on holiday, and I despise Super Bock. It's alright out of the tap, but in cans etc it's just rank...

Various drinks tried tonight.

Staropramen - Seen it in a few places but decided to try it today, nice !

Red Stripe - Never seen this on draught before today, ever.

Baltika - Russian, bit shit.

Zywiec - Polish, lovely !

Andechser Dunkles Weissbier - I was a bit wrecked at this point.

I'm in a beer thread and Carling is getting mentioned more than anything else?!! Thats not a joke, thats tragic!

My personal favourite top tipples would go like this......

Warsteiner - superb German beer.

Staroprammen - Although it really needs to be drunk in the Czech Rep. Tastes so much better.

Tsingtao - Have to have a couple when at a Chinese restaurant.

Amstel - AS someone said, good to see this around more. It was everywhere on holiday in Crete (Mythos is a nice Greek lager)

VB - lovely Oz beer

Speights - NZ beer - to be fair I like ALL beers over there (like a mix of Ale and Lager)

I must admit I'm disappointed when I walk in a new pub and see Kronenberg, Stella, Fosters, Carling etc. Its soooooo boring. Coors, Kirin, Budvar, Pilsner Urquell, Cobra are the types of beers I like to see.

I love Belgo's. I love how the beer menu is about three times the size of the food menu.

Mussels, chips and beer. :(

VB's rubbish. And an anomoly in an otherwise good list. I only spent three weeks in Oz but My favourite beers were Coopers Red and Green and James Boeg - a Tazmanian beer. Crown was also popular and better than VB.

I'm also amazed at the amount of love Coors gets in this thread. At least in the US all the beers are pissy and you get a choice of different types of Coors (Extra Gold being my favourite although I prefer a Schlitz) but over here there are so many other beers to drink there is little reason for coors to get a look in, unless it is a very very hot day.

Pah, rubbish - fool!

You knocked it right on the head with the Coors comment, great in the summer, fresh, crisp, clean taste. Its not my favourite beer but I do enjoy it many more times than I do Stella these days (which i've loved since i was 18)

Tell you one thing, try getting hold of Cotswold Premium Lager. Its a lager thats come from an Ale brewery (like Skinners Storm Lager). Its actually very nice and shows we are capable of breweing a decent lager - the british that is!

Yeah - Stella has palled for me in recent times. i prefer Kronenbourg but find it gives me a worse head the next day.

I'll look out for Cotswold premium.

Since discovering it Spring this year, myself and the missus are both really enjoying Brahma, its clean and crisp and decently priced. Brazillian lager apparently.

I like this, as well.

I find it hard to look further than Sol or Corona, though! I wish they were on offer more often.

Was out in Grenada in the Carribean over the Summer, where I discovered Carib - nicest lager I've ever had by a mile. Drank far too much of it while sitting out in the heat, but it was worth it :(

*edit* Also - whats the Russian lager that starts with a B? Comes in lots of different strengths, with numbers on the front saying which it is? My mate converted me to that with his tales of nights out in Moscow on the 12-rated stuff :(

Jesus, some people should be ashamed...

American beer? Go microbrewery....Sam Adams at least......

Asahi is rather good, and Budvar is better than the US namesake...Kingfisher is ok.....But really, unless you're going for something as dry as Asahi, or strong as Leffe......don't bother...

Try a pale ale instead, for something actually drinkable....Oakham Ales JHB is a nice first step from lager....or Badgers Champion Ale..... You're going to make me sound like an old man at this rate....but Coors? Carlsberg?....You might as well recommend McDonalds as great meat

Subtle pimping of your own goods there...!

I used to go to a West Indian restaurant that had this. Very nice but not earth shattering.

Couldn't agree more!
