The Beer Thread

Best bottled beer I've had recently is Sierra Navada, which is bizarrely from California. Had it in the states years ago, but you can pick it up in Safeway now.

Is slightly bitter and bottle conditioned. Nice alternative to minging euro-lagers.

This

Honourable mentions to the Sainsburys TTD Franconian Dark Lager and Cologne Style lager.

Bitter wise Shrimpers and Harveys probably my two favourites, got a soft spot for Youngs Special too.

Oh yeah and most of Samuel Smith's stuff is good

I've noticed recently that a lot of bottled beers seem to be getting stronger and stronger. My local Budgens only has a couple of beers under 5%. there are lots at 6-7%, which is too much for me really.

Is it just a weird local stocking policy or has anyone else noticed it?

Since discovering it Spring this year, myself and the missus are both really enjoying Brahma, its clean and crisp and decently priced. Brazillian lager apparently.

Brahma beer, a wonderful recent discovery. They had a Bogof in co-op recently and I quickly feel in love with it. Easily ranks near the top of my favourites. Sadly I went into my co-op the next day to get more but sadly the offer was gone because they had ran out of stock.

What is the 'special' ingredient in Belgian bottled lagers that makes them so fab? Abbey beers, I think they are more specifically called. I can't get enough of them, and usually I don't even like beer.

No special ingredient, they're just good beer, unlike the crap you get served in most pubs. You should try some good german lager as well, perfect for the nice weather, and won't get you shitfaced quite as quickly as the mental belgian stuff. (Rochefort 10, I'm looking at you)

Laithwaites now sells Cooper's. Decent Aussie beer.

red=sparkling ale

green=pale ale.

Both are lovely. Red is lethal; 5.9%

first of all, kudos for the avatar, glad to see another fan of The Chap on here.

secondly, Coopers is a cracking drink, i found a pub by battersea park where they even knew to hold the bottle upside down for 30 seconds before pouring to get the sediment moving.

+1 to the Brahma love.

It's all about the bottle shape. A hint of oval so that you can readily clasp it as you slump lazily and drift into an alcohol fuelled afternoon/evening.

Top drawer.

Mind you, it's no asahi black. No sir.

I had a good Wheat beer the other day. American one called Blue moon. Serve it with a slice of Orange, it's gorgeous on a summer day.

Sainsbo's charge an astronomical £1.99 a bottle, but I'd say it verges on being worth it.

Right!

Hoegarden is brilliant and fruity. Always good draught.

Leffe, obviously.

Bud draught is always nice for a change too. Shame more places don't do it.

But a couple of recent favourites. Kasteel Cru (usually found in waitrose and morrisons) is a brill bottle of biere. and La Trappe - Quadruppel (sp?) 10% of pure trapist goodness! A few bottles of them, and you're well on your way too!

Another beer I haven't had in a long while - Fosters AMBER. Used to serve it in our localish bowling arena. It had the taste of a beer, but the creamyness of a guiness. it was amazing. I was so sad when they stopped it. Has anyone else tried this???

Whenever I've had Singha in this country it's been foul but since I had some in Thailand I've discovered that it can actually be quite nice. They used to do it in the Chinese cash and carry down the road but since I've wanted to buy some they've stopped selling it.

Oh well. I'll have to settle for Tsingtao in the meantime.

Beer and orange? Are you serious?
