October Hip Hop Recommendations

Recommended Posts

Lets kick this off.

Previously......In Hip Hop Recommendations.

Cals been to Tokyo

Ben is MIA Again!!

Ashmatuk owns the best Hip Hop shop cambridge has seen. Etchalon Records

Ghostface is playing Live in my town this month!

You should all buy and listen to:

O.C - Word...Life

Been bumping this in the car all month since its re-release. Its really smooth, lycra tight lyrics, its not over-produced and swamped with samples.

Binary Star - Masters Of The Universe

JRISGOD sent me this, and as he said last month its ace. Lyricly its amazing.

It gets the Devil-Goh 'Cold Chillin' Stamp of freshness.

Just found out that kanye west is doing a few gigs at the end of the month, with support from talib kweli. Im tempted to go to the brixton academy gig but tickets, I think, are expensive at 25 squids.

Its all about the uk ish this month with albums coming from rodney p, Evil ed, tommy evans and the long awaited £10 bag 3.

Also check http://www.sonymusic.co.uk/nas/intro.html for the finalists form the uk.

Nice to see yungun and lowkey made it into the final.

im still trying to get hold of the OC album, which I think you said you were after :(

That was me and I managed to get hold of one, sorry.

You should do a website though dude, i'd definintely use it.

If anyones in the Brixton area on Saturday night they should come to this:

If Klash wasn't enough Dirtburg are one of the best live hip hop bands you'll ever see!

^^^^^^^^^^^^

That's worth seeing purely for the The Bug, heavy heavy bass matched with crazy dancehall. Off to nottingham at the weekend though to see Sixtoo, Blockhead and DJ Signify at The Social, Signify especially should be good as his album is easily one of the year's best.

Venomous Villain has finally shipped from Amazon after about 2 months of faffing, hopefully it will be half decent.

This should possibly go in Ask the Forum but I thought I'd through it open to the heads -

I spoke to my brother earlier who's currently at uni and he's djing at his Fresher's Ball on Monday for an hour or so. I'm going to stay with him for a couple of days and he says that I can help him, he wants me to play a bit of hiphop as his tastes are a bit more alterno-rock orientated. I was planning on playing some well known stuff but keeping it slightly left field, so far I've got:

Talib Kweli - Move Somethin'

Diverse - Explosive

Roots Manuva - Witness (One Hope)

DJ Shadow - Six Days (Soulwax Remix)

Couple of blends - stuff off the New York State of Mind mixtape/the grey album

Grandmaster Flash - White Lines

Tribe Called Quest - Scenario

It's quite hard choosing as my usual tastes wouldn't go down too well. I'm still compiling (it's going to be from cds), just wondered what always goes down well. Remember this is for students though so nothing too heavy or obscure

Pharoah Monch - Simon Says

Biggy - Juicy

Any Dre stuff

Any old school Snoop stuff

Anything that sounds remotely like DJ Shadow

Maybe some Ugly Duckling etc depending on where this university is. (God I hate students, apart from myself obviously  )

Cheers for those, hadn't though about Simon Says but that's deffo going to be on. I'll bring my best of Death Row compilation for those Snoop tracks.

I've been listening to VV2 most of today and it's good but not in spitting distance of Vaudeville Villain, I don't think any MF Doom fan will be disappointed though. The beats are incredibly inventive, a little too much in places as the tracks aren't as fluent as VV.

Doom's flow is as interesting to listen to as ever but Madvillain is still his high point.

Here's a track (first time I've ever done this so hope it works, apologies for the 96k bitrate too - I had to shrink it down for my 56k connection)

Viktor Vaughn - Fallback/Tittyfat

Wow, this is slow this month.

Bought some bargains in th HMV Sale this weekend.

Nas - Stillmatic

Only had it on MD, it was 6 quid. Its no 'Lost Tapes' but its still better than a lot of his stuff.

Big Boi And Dre Present - Outkast

A greatest hits album, well worth the 5 pounds fot 'The Whole World' alone.

I can funk dance like the ghost of James Brown to that shit!

Outkast - Southernplayalisticcaddillacmusic

Old school flows and how southcoast hip hop should be done, Its no ATLiens mind you.

And our local Hip Hop peddler Ashmatuk sorted me out with

Porn Theatre Ushers - Taxachusetts

Didnt know what to expect but was very plesently suprised, really good stuff.

I went to the London show on the Friday. I thought Blockhead was a bit dissapointing, a bloke standing behind a laptop playing background music does not a good show make but Signify and Sixtoo were dope.

What did you think jrisgod?

To be honest I spent most of the night dribbling over the equipment they we're using! And then attacking dj Signify with a finger puppet ;)

You got that in the HMV Sale?

I'm pretty sure I've never seen it in my local music selling establishments.

Might go and hunt it out later today, though.

Cool, glad you enjoyed it! What did you think of Dirtburg?

They were excellent, the MC's were good and the band were pretty tight, the bass player had a giant grin pasted on his face for the whole set, but hey that's bass players for ya. They played a new track which was pretty good too. Maybe they could have done with a few more melodic hooks, but thats not necessarily what a funk band is about so I can forgive that.

I missed Klashnekoff though, I left at 3am, so either he was there very early on or appeared after that.

Yeah, the Dirt are great live. I was chatting to them that night and apparently they just started the band for a laugh because they were all hip hop fans in rock bands but they have so much fun that they're just doing Dirtburg now!

Apparently Klashnekoff didn't turn up. Not for the first time.

On another note, here's a nice little Nas bootleggy remix thing thats eased me into Monday quite nicely:

One of my favourite albums of the year so far, but I always have been a massive Ushers fan anyway so I'm a tad biased! I posted up "I Dwarf You" from this album a few months back.

Can't wait for that Wu-Tang disc.

Anyone checked out 'Legacy Of Blood', yet?

The GZA collabo was hot, and I just downloaded 'Philosophy Of Horrors', which is fuckin' sick. Check out this verse:

[Vinnie Paz]

Fuck ya crucifix, your religion and its uselessness

Your propaganda is more wickeder than luciphers

Islamic scientists predicted the computer chips

I spit a rap at you to rock you like Medusa's lips

You fucking goons are sick, and y'all can see that

and y'all are my sons like Ebrahim and Eshak

So lets take a walk through the tivest town

I'm the diven science of the light and the sound

I'm the sublime giant with the right to the crown

I'm the divine tyrant and I'm striking you down

So I teach my kin to attack the beast

For trying to hide me from the 4th book of Makavis

You wack MC's catch a hook to the head

Cause y'all don't know about the tibetan book of the dead

You don't know about anything that's important

About the dead sea scrolls found in Jordan

About the way that you conduct yourself in Satan's wratch

But I don't fuck with you, you walking down the pagan's path

Yeah I've heard very good things so I will definitely get that in good time.

Downloaded, yo.

I'll listen to it on the way to work tomorrow. Well, i'll listen to about the first four tracks. I wish I worked more than 15mins away from home sometimes

If I didn't make it clear before - they really love the Xbox.

I mean are they getting paid off by Microsoft here or what?

It wasn't what I expected (havn't heard either AOI albs except the singles) and feels like a big shift away from any sort of sound De La had. I like it though, lots, but it could be anybody really.

Now looking forward to Mos Def - The New Danger immensely. Can't see it being very hip-hop though.
