Halo 2, without the licence could have passed for a poor imitator like so many that were doing the rounds at that time. The graphics were also gash, the increased textures and decreased levels made everything too muddy.

Which imitators of the first Halo are you talking about that are on the same level as Halo 2? :(

Now for the pedant in me to really come through but I really missed the particle effect that was present in the original when you fired plasma weapons against walls. I remember seeing that first time through and thinking OMFG!?!

This. Was it present in the Halo 3 beta ?

Bungie have a new Podcast up - this one is all about Forge. It does sound very intriguing, I like that they've designed the feature as a game, rather than just a map editor. Some of the game variants they talk about sound like great fun as well - Rocket Races, Infection etc.

I loved what they were saying about the new power up. There's the overshield and active camo as before, and then there's a third one whose parameters you can adjust yourself. The example given on the podcast was of a power up that gave the player lower gravity, faster run speed and active camo all at the same time.

And there were the teleporters too! On Snowbound, you can stick a teleport reciever out beyond the boundaries of the level within range of those automated turrets and then, as a monitor, fly around holding the teleporter and swipe it over other players, transporting them to instant death.

So much fun to be had :(

I'm very impressed by how much thought they've put into this but isn't it going to make joining random servers a complete nightmare with total arseholes endlessly screwing with the game? The situation you've dsecribed above sounds like it could be fun, but only if you're playing with good natured people, which is going to mean only people on your friends list on a custom game.

Perhaps they've explained it but I don't understand how they're going to implement forge with matchmaking, given that you don't set up a server in the traditional manner. Will it be the sole reserve of those with enough mates to set up a decent custom game?

Pretty much. If you're not willing to have randoms in your game then it will be just you and your friends. Forge-related stuff definatley won't be featuring in standard matchmaking, unless Bungie particularly like a game/map type the community has created and implement it in a playlist.

You'd be playing it with friends when you set it up, they call it 'honour rules', but then you can save it and apply the Custom Games settings to it and send it to your friends and play together without the random pissing about.

Halo 3 is GOLD

Bungie

Halo 3 for Xbox 360 has gone Gold! That means we delivered a final version to our internal certification group that passed all the tests and is now being whisked away to top secret manufacturing locations to be turned into retail versions of the game – and eventually packaged and sent to stores in various cases, tins and cat-helmets. We can’t wait to share it with you guys on September 25th and 26th, but we have to say thanks.

We have to say thanks to everyone at Bungie who worked so hard to make this the best game we've ever made. We have to say thanks to everyone at Microsoft who helped us make it the best game we ever made. We have to say thanks to our tireless team of artists, designers, engineers, musicians, technicians, writers, directors, producers, thinkers, administrators, ninjas, specialists, gorillas, webmasters and pimps. We’re a family and we made this game for you, our extended family. We hope you like it. Nobody deserves any more recognition than anyone else, but an extra special thanks goes out anyway, to the test team who got it to this stage, in a pool of their own sweat, tears and blood.

And of course, we wouldn't be here today without the tireless devotion of our fan community - we thank you all as well for supporting Bungie Studios in our never ending quest for World Domination and we look forward to sharing another billion+ hours together on Xbox Live when Halo 3 lands in just a few short weeks. The wait is almost over.

We Finished our Fight. Your fight begins in 27 days.

Are you ready?

Steady, now.

If it's better than Halo i'll chew both my legs off.

Woo, it's close! Who cares when it leaks? You'll only be able to play the campaign.

So, I don't know if I've missed the discussion about this but I was amazed and disappointed to see that there's not going to be any clan support. It hadn't really occurred to me that that was even a possibility and, well, it's fucking rubbish. If Live can't support it and it really can't just be done in game then MS are the wankers rather than Bungie, but whoever's responsible, it's a poor show.

:(
