I'm still hopeful the Sharquoi(?) will show up somewhere along the line. If they do, make sure you've got your running shoes on.

Are these some sort of new enemy mentioned in the Halo books or comics then? I never read Ghosts of Onyx but I have read the three first books. That doesn't ring any bells. Care to elaborate?

Halopedia seems to contain all the info available on the Sharquoi, which is to say, not very much.

In the Conversations from the Universe booklet found in Halo 2: Limited Collecter's Edition, an Elite refers to something called the Sharquoi. This has been assumed to be another Covenant race, although it is not known for sure. In a deleted scene, a mural can be seen showcasing the Covenant races, including a very large creature believed by some to be a Sharquoi. However, this creature could also be a Drinol, which had not yet been cut at that stage of development. There is no direct evidence, then, to state that the Sharquoi is the large creature, although it is difficult to think what else it could be. There is even a possibility that Sharquoi is the Covenant word for Drinol, although the name Drinol does not follow the same patterns of all the other human names. Also it has been seen in "Et tu Brute?" that brutes lead groups of grunts into battle and the players might not have recognized them with their new armor

From Bungie Weekly What's Update Nov 19:

Q: What's a Sharquoi?

A: Very freaking dangerous.

Frankie has talked about playing Halo 3, and fighting Grunts and "something larger than a Grunt," supporting the idea that the Sharquoi will be seen in Halo 3. KP also mentions fighting Grunts and a "CENSORED".

Those IGN impressions make for very exciting reading.

http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/813/813454p1.html

Tearing through the cave for the first time, we really got to appreciate the subtle graphical effects. The cave air is full of dusty atmosphere; cracks and fissures in the roof send glowing beams over high-resolution rock textures, showing off superb HDR lighting and very cool shadowing.
Watching them from afar, storming over hills and diving behind cover, you really do get the impression the AI is radically beyond most other games on the market. This is a bigger leap than the graphics, we think.

Speaking of which, despite what you might read elsewhere, Halo 3 still has a ton of jaggies in 720p, running on an LCD television. We're not deeply concerned, but it is definitely noticeable. On the upside, the framerate never dips below 30 frames per second - even with a lot of action and rampant chaos unfurling

There were a lot of little details that we've glossed over - squadrons of dozens of Banshees flying in formation off into the horizon, for instance; this is merely a taste of things to come. For now, rest assured that Bungie's promise of epic scope has tentatively been realised.

The game still feels almost identical to Halo - it hasn't lost that magic. But there's a lot more to the AI, the graphics are sharper and full of detail, and the encounters are never less than thrilling. We cannot wait for more.

By the way, regarding that EG ad, I don't think that indicates that MC dies at all. He could well do, but all that is saying that heros live on through the stories told about them and their actions - through legends.

I hardly think Bungie are going to approve an ad which gives away something as major as MC dying, personally.

I think they'd absolutely use an ad that makes it SEEM like he's going to die if the last level of the game is designed to make it appear as if you're on a suicide mission, though.

It's really no where near as bad as everyone loves to whine about.

It's just no Halo 1.

This is true. I was SO disappointed about the campaign in Halo 2 when it came out that I turned it off and sat crying in a dark room. Returning to it (and playing it on Heroic) proves that it really is a good game, just different (and yes a bit lacking) in comparison to the original.

My anticipatometer for the third installment is hitting maximum now, though.

i finally finished halo 2 on heroic last week (having got fed up at the entrance of gravemind back in 2004). There are bits I really like (such as the freedom to run up onto the roofs of New Mombasa which I didn't do the first time around, to snipe all the covenant at no cost to yourself), but coupled always with the arbiter stealth levels (which on heroic at least you can do without shooting anything, by simply cloaking at opportune times).

On the other hand, some of the later confrontations are pure halo - do I snipe that person at that point, then switch to that bullet weapon to take out elites two and three before throwing a grenade at four and then hitting him with the sword; or do I do something else?

Which is something that all other FPSes lack for me, when I play them.

Just out of curiosity, how would people be with an ending along the lines of the Chief activating the Halos to stop the Flood? Would you prefer some form of closure, even as bleak as that, over an wooly, more ambiguous finale that leaves things open or do you find the notion of killing off characters unappealing? See also the sorry state of Snake in Guns of the Patriots - given it looks quite likely he'll buy the farm in that, I've heard more than one person say they're already less enthusiastic about the game and may not buy it after all because they hate the thought of Snake getting old and dying.

I'd quite like a bleak ending. As long as isn't so bleak that it makes me want to slit my wrists.

Personally though I think they'll take the ending from Marathon, just like most other stuff.

Master Chief using Forerunner technology to go back in time to stop shit from happening. Or something.

Ohhhh, this is tempting me to get a 360 when I get paid.

On another Halo note, I got my modded xbox out today for the first time in almost a year, and Halo 2 keeps locking up in-game! NO! God knows why, I've tried it with the chip on and the chip off, but no luck. Other games seem to work fine, but how am I to finish Halo 2 now?! :(

I have to say this here but, for the first time since I apathetically knew that this was coming out, I'm kind of excited for it, if only for the semi-meta gaming possibilities of that multiplayer edit mode thing slightly detailed in the new Edge. But, I'm not interested at all in the story (fun to play in co-op, but a dull, cliche story I have complete and purposeful ignorance of), and I won't even consider a 360 until it gets fixed. Probably because of the burning hatred I have for Halo 2 after building up a lot of excitement (hell, I even started the RLLMUK Nubes club, fact fans!) and getting quickly turned off it by proxy.

I don't really care for the actual story, just the fun gun play and the funny little Grunts.

Stories in games dont do anything for me either, they tend to just wash over me and I forget about them in 5 minutes.

So just more shooty shooty fun would be good.

But I might be a bit strange as I hate games played just for high scores as well :(

Yeah, I've been playing Halo 2 as well. Really enjoying it, and so much better than the other console FPS out there.

Ditto.

Although on the 360 I tend to get an odd static, semi-transparent, silouette shadow image over the screen on certain levels. Is this an emulation glitch? Anyone else noticed it?

I never came round to finishing Halo 2, so I popped it in the 360 today to start all over again in preperation for Halo 3.

It's much better than I remembered and still looks the works.

Agreed. It's all about the combat dynamics. They're just so much better than other games. Even if they made some wrong decisions in Halo 2, it's still very good.

I've had that as well. I think it was only on the Arbiter levels, though.
