Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but flamethrowers are in.

Wow, at last!

And flame grenades as well:

"It has a very similar level of damage as [the flamethrower]. It works pretty much the same way. It's very dangerous to get hit by one directly. It will explode and splash over you when it hits." So, you thought the spike grenade was cool, huh?

Just as gamers found interesting uses for the new grenades and gadgets introduced in the beta, the firebomb is good for more than just blowing up the opposition. The firebomb will be a useful tool in multiplayer games like CTF to cut off a flag-runner. "You can [create walls of flames]," O'Connor said. "You can block an exit by throwing down a couple of fire bombs. It will create a small wall of flames that it's not smart for someone to walk through."

isn't 4 grenade types a bit over the top?

i like the tactical stuff that the flame nades bring, but i don't really see the point of the spikey ones, they're pretty much identical to stickies. plus i reckon having to cycle through them all will be a pain in the arse, especially in the middle of a battle. cycling through 2 is pretty intuitive and you don't need to look to see which type you've got, but 4 could become a bit confusing.

If you can't be bothered to click through the grenades, just chuck what's highlighted at the time, they all cause damage.

If you want to be a bit more tactical you can choose before you chuck. It's just a bit more choice for those who want it.

Halo 3 and Cod 4 are going to be battling for my online shooter time that's for sure. (not a bad thing at all)

What a year.

The difference with spike grenades is that they stick to everything (except for energy shields), and the blast is limited to quite a precise cone. So if, for example, you're being chased through some corridors on High Ground, you could place a spike grenade at head height on a nearby wall, timing it so that it blows up in the face of the guy behind you as he runs past, leaving you relatively unharmed. Added to that, the spikes ricochet off the walls in more confined spaces, increasing the damage inflicted on the target.

Are the co-op characters going to be AI's when you're not playing co-op? And if so, will they be stupidly invulnerable?

Only the Arbiter is there for some of the time when you play solo, and he's not invulnerable.

So I can bloop him in the head if he gets on my tit end. :(

That doesn't mean the mission won't end when he dies though...

Nah, they're much more tactical. There were a couple of really ace places to use them in the beta and I'm sure hundreds more will be discovered when the game is out.

The best place I found was at territory 2 on High Ground, I just made this quick video which should show what the 'tactic' is towards the end:

Clicky

The wall's angled perfectly to kill anyone that happens to be trying to capture the territory, worked every time I tried it.

To be fair, it doesn't even say that he can die, just that he's not invulnerable. I take it as saying that he will have to fall back and take cover from time to time - you won't be able to sit back and let him play through the game for you. And I doubt you'll be able to kill him either.

You can't believe it in a bad way or a good way?

Bad way. I remember reading the Bungie forums not long after Halo 2 came out and there were loads of BUNGEY YOU SHULD PUT FLAMTHROWWS IN IT WOUD BE SO KWL.

I didn't think they ever would. Stinks of gimmick to me.

But saying that, I wasn't keen on the deployables but they just worked. So hey-ho!

That's exactly what I was going to post.

jon1 seems to be on a roll of misinformation in the last couple of pages.

The Spike Grenades are amazing.

If he's not invulnerable and he gets hit by a Fuel Rod gun I doubt he'll just 'fall back', I reckon he'll die horrible.

Fair point. I hadn't considered highly prejudicial explosive devices - so you think it would be checkpoint time? That seems a bit harsh. This could be a tricky one to balance.

Wasn't it in the PC version? Multiplayer at least.

Yeah, it was - and it was awesome Wolf :(

IIRC it works like the Plasma Rifle, but with changeable gas tanks for ammo. So if you just hold the trigger down it will overheat, but you don't need to reload it very often. It might not be like that in H3 though...

They pulled it from H1 because they said it didn't feel right when you couldn't set fire to things as you would expect, I wonder if they've managed to do that in this? Gearbox never bothered doing it for the PC version though.

Like Halo 2 co-op on Legendary I guess then... which could be a pain. Let's hope the AI is good enough.

Like setting fire to an enemy on Valhalla and knocking him into the Mancannon so he flies through the air landing on 4 of his mates and killing them all?

yeah, i'm just trying to find as many negatives as i can, so when it's launched and everything's brilliant i won't be disappointed!
