I think that co-op only really becomes such a requirement if the single player is lacking in the first place (Halo 2, R6 Vegas, Gears of War etc.)

I think the game is so comprehensive in terms of multiplayer content and such a big-budget-redefining-the-meaning-of-AAA game that it's omission would be criminal. I'd prefer they delay the game until it is certainly in.

I shall resolutely be playing it on single player prior to any multiplayer action. I don't want anyone, no matter how close to me they are, compromising my first Halo 3 campaign experience.

Me too.

Dark room, girlfriend out, phone off.

Actually that's bringing back depressing memories of Halo 2 disappointment.

I'm still doing it like that tho.

So I don't need online co-op delivering on launch day. I do however expect it at some point in some format, even if it's noticeably flawed.

Totally.

...but i can see it coming now. Trying to enjoy the single player in peace. With every man and his dog inviting you to a MP game. can see the immersion

being lost a bit with "Tasty Bellend wants to play" coming up every 3 seconds.

Doing the same as well.

I'm definately going to be playing this in coop first time around. My housemate and I have been planning this for ages, and now that system link coop has been confirmed, we're good to go. Crucially, I know I can rely on him not to screw around and ruin the experience :)

A choice extract from the lastest Weekly Update:

We didn’t start the fire, but a series of reports that spread from an unfortunate leak of an upcoming issue of U.S. enthusiast magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly spiraled out of control and suddenly reports on the Internet included salacious headlines like “Halo 3 Co-Op Heads Offline†and heads needed to be dipped in ice water in order to prevail.

All we confirmed to EGM for their sweet, mind-twitterpating Campaign reveal (and other massive feature reveal) regarding Cooperative Play in Halo 3’s Campaign is that System Link co-op will be included in Halo 3. Just like we told EGM, we’re aware that people want co-op online but the challenge of getting our complicated A.I. systems, huge game world, and gargantuan encounters neatly packaged and transferring across the Interwebz is a mythic undertaking. Nonetheless, like other elements of Halo 3, online co-op is a feature we’re wrestling with somewhere in a muddy and muggy Florida swamp against a ton-toothed Alligator, but, what we haven’t really talked about is how big the knife we brought to the wrasslin’ match is.

All that said, EGM doesn’t really know whether or not Halo 3 will ship with online co-op, only Bungie knows. The only thing they did know is that co-op was available for split-screen and System Link. As we approach the tail end of development, we will have a clearer picture of whether or not that online feature will be included. Assuming either way would be foolish at this time. We will say more when we feel it’s prudent. Because that’s how we roll.

And here's a real, functioning, honest-to-god Warthog. It was built by WETA for the 'Arms Race' short, which is the first in a series according to Frankie. Presumably we'll be seeing the rest of them in the run up to the game's release.

I'm hoping me and tbb will be able to do this too

...

Talkshowhost - what I meant when I said that it wasn't designed with co-op in mind from the off was that at the core it was a single player story. Obviously they wanted to get co-op (over live) in there from the off but I would imagine they'd focus on the single player first. If you get what I mean.

That warthog just looks like it's been photoshopped. Any other angles or is that the only one?

That's the only one, but there's a much larger version of the same image if you want to see it in greater detail:

I forgot to add this image of the Halo 3 headset. Strangely enough, the one that comes with the branded console will be wired, while a wireless version will be made available seperately.

Scroll down the discussion and you find this said by one of Bungie.net moderators (Achronos):

You guys do realize you're talking about an an out of context quote taken from a blurry picture of part of a stolen page of an article written during a visit made more than a month ago, right? Just checking.

Bungie has no comment on the status of online co-op in Halo 3 at this time. We'll let you know when we have something to say. In the meantime, I shall continue to enjoy watching the Internet spazz out over something some bloggers trolling for website hits wrote. The amount of debate you guys can go through with zero actual facts is quite amazing.

So they've had some time to try and get the damn thing included...

It might be for the best, the wireless headset isn't the best bit of kit ever.

Frank O'Connor said (somewhere, I can't find it now) that he's been testing the Halo 3 wireless headset, and had none of the drop-outs/volume/voice quality problems of the normal wireless headset. Hopefully this is the case, I would really like a working headset with no annoying cable.

damn. I didn't really consider that playing online games might ruin the campaign. But I can easily see people shouting out the ending or something online just to be spiteful. especially as they'll now be able to tell how far you've gotten.

But to be honest. I can't see myself staying away from Matchmaking for that long.

Everyone said that was going to happen before Halo 2 came out too, but no one ever tried to spoil the ending of that.

Oh wait.
