Halo 3 - now coming to Xbox One. MC Collection.

Generally fine when I've played it. Although we did get a occasionally recurring bug the other day where one person would spawn as if they were lying on the floor and very drunk.

Except it only ever happened to me. :P

Is getting 4 player co-op and keeping track of 4 hyoomans and a few baddies just as difficult as 2 hyoomans and lots of baddies?

I appreciate it's probably difficult, but if they can't do it, they're going to look like plums (by me, some pleb on a forum)

If only it was as simple :P

Each NPC is essentially another playable character, so their location will have to be 'communicated' to all. This is where the sync issues arise. And any games networking coder will gladly inform you that sync issues are a royal pain in the ass to solve

So, if in Halo 3, you have two playable characters (you and your co-op buddy) and are about to trigger a battle with 8 Grunts, 4 Elites, a couple of Brutes and a number of vehicles (as vehicles add up too, and this could possible be a small battle if we are to believe the quotes) the numbers soon stack up.

And then if its not synched up correctly then you are both going to be claiming to have shot the same baddies, the same grenades exploding at different times on different screens, vehicles 'teleporting' e.t.c. e.t.c. e.t.c. a myriad of issues...

And all this down a 64kbps connection :(

So yes, it's hard to do

Isn't Xbox Live 1MB minimum?

I reckon it will be in, they mentioned that Campaign occurs through a lobby, even in singleplayer.

You could choose campaign mode in an online multiplayer lobby in Halo 2 though, yet the ability to actually start a campaign game with more than one player in the lobby was not there.

I'm not a games developer but two months to implement a feature that has been very popular on other titles just seems a bit last-minute.

As someone else pointed out, where do you get two months from? I'd be extremely surprised if the feature wasn't on the original design document they made over 3 years ago.

It was on the original design document of Halo 2. The betas had the option on, although it didn't do anything.

I am sorry if this has been asked before, but wasn't Halo 3 built with co-op in mind?
No it wasn't.

That, I meant, was ridiculous... Really, really ridiculous... Halo 3 should have been built with co-op in mind. They are having problems now because they are trying to add it as an afterthought. Which is ridiculous.

Like Yaw said further up, this was not added as an afterthought, this is a feature that has been in the design doc for ages, but they haven't managed to get working as well as they'd like (read my previous post)

And rather than give you, the Halo fan, a shit online experience (once again read my previous post), they have pulled it, and hope to include it in an update

These decisions are not taken lightly, and i'm positive they have done their best to get it working

I tell you what they could do... They could delay it for another 4 months just to get the online co-op aspect working if you like?

Why don't you mail them and suggest it

Regardless of what Xbox Live is, 64k is the cert standard

Well, I wouldn't mind if they delay it 4 months to add a good co-op experience. But that is not really their choice, is it?

On the other hand, having the co-op in the design documents from the beginning but not being able to incorporate it, doesn't that mean that the direction the game was taking through development was hurting online co-op? The decide to follow that direction instead of changing the game to incorporate live co-op. I just hope the decision is worth it.

You may not mind the delay, but at the end of the day MGS do. They have a portfolio of games to deliver and Halo 3 is the strategic pinnacle of that. They are not going to allow a 2007 holiday period without a killer app just for a feature that can't be made to function correctly AND provide a great gaming experience

How exactly could it hurt online co-op? Features get dropped from games all the time without you knowing about it. Does this harm your enjoyment of the game?

Essentially, if the SP is as epic as they make out, and MP delivers as much fun as 2 did then they have pretty much nailed it

If they add it as DLC like they hint at, what's the difference? Except you get to play it for those 4 months in the meantime.

I'll pay 800 points extra or whatever if it means getting the game now.

That would be great but it wouldn't be the same. I have a mate I'm playing the Halos with and experiencing the battles and story of Halo 3 in live co-op on release day is something we were looking forward to. It just won't be the same if we play it now and then again as co-op when it will be available.

I don't suppose you are suggesting waiting 4 months to play a released Halo 3?

Is this what everyone else wants to do, or would you play through the campaign by yourself first and then with friends later?

Playing through Halo 3 in co-op in whatever form on launch day will be a great experience but the lack of a live option would be a terrible loss. Then again the addition of 4 player link-up co-op will be a big plus

i'm doing it myself first. probably heroic then legendary, then i'll move onto online co-op (if it's there).

By now, you've already heard that Halo 3 has again hit the cover of EGM, but someone handling the issue's printing managed to scan some of the goods online. Consequently, a whole load of misinformation has made its way around the net, and while we'll be delivering the complete goods to you very soon, patience is needed.

Jeremy tagged along with the EGM crew and ended up penning half of the cover story you'll be reading shortly, so he's obviously frustrated over the whole mess, especially how the online co-op details have been so blown out of proportion -- Bungie's working on the feature, they just weren't ready to commit to it shipping in the box when we visited them a month or so ago. Don't fret, they're working on it.

Can the speculation die now?

PANIC! It's Not going to have co-op online!!! ;)

I shall resolutely be playing it on single player prior to any multiplayer action. I don't want anyone, no matter how close to me they are, compromising my first Halo 3 campaign experience.

So I don't need online co-op delivering on launch day. I do however expect it at some point in some format, even if it's noticeably flawed.

I just want to play co-op tbh, I get bored with fps games if I play them in single-player. Nowadays I don't have the time to sit around with friends to play games the whole day, everyday. Everybody is busy with their own life, and a lack of online co-op means that Halo 3 will not be played very often. It's a shame, but with all the other extremely promising games coming out in the second half of 2007, I'm seriously considering cancelling my pre-order. :)

Out of interest, what great co-op fps had made you tire of single player?

I always get bored with fps games, it's fun for awhile, but then the monotony gets to me. Playing Halo in co-op was unexpectedly brilliant fun; after playing it for one night at a friends house, I bought an xbox the very next day. That's why online co-op is so essential to me, but I know I'm in the minority in placing *such* importance on co-op.

It was playing co-op halo for an hour at an xbox PR event that made me switch my order for a US gamecube for a US xbox instead. Literally from barely no interest whatsoever in the ugly green microsoft box to instant purchase. In hindsight, a very good choice too.
