Another thing:

Custom games are the single biggest blockage to the "average casual gamer". My partner loves Halo 2 when it's rumble pit and it's a simple "shoot stuff" gametype. Soon as things start becoming complicated, with hills and things, let alone, bombs and territories she will put the controller down.

The best possible solution for "average casuals" is a matchmade gametype that just keeps things as simple as possible. You have a gun, so does that guy, you've got to shoot him.

Regardless of if people like matchmaking or not, it's still very definately one of Halo's ISP's.

Surely you mean USP :P

I had no idea this was such a big deal. Is it really that bad when matchmaking? Do you always get shitty low-grav gametypes?

We have ISP's at my work. Anyway, the low grav thing might be an issue if all anyone is playing is custom games. That won't happen with MM.

While I enjoyed custom games with mates on the Beta, 50% of them were shit after 1 play, let alone the 20th.

I was kind of thinking this but didn't want to anger the people on here, most of the custom games that people on here created for the beta and thought were so amazing were in fact really shit. That goes for everyone.

and again i'll reiterate, how would someone joining one of these custom gametypes have any clue what to do? even with 5 minutes of explanation in the lobby, it takes plenty of play time to actually get to know the intricacies of most of the custom games i've played.

i reckon it'll be in there and so it should, but as soon as matchmaking starts to suffer get rid.

Are you just being obtuse or do I ACTUALLY have to explain this to you?

Wolf says "nobody needs a lobby browser for custom games! We can easily set up games on the forum!"

So I say "some people don't post on forums"

And he says "it's no use to any of us! At least not unless people want to join random rooms!"

And I say "some people want to join random rooms".

As you'll see from the context, by 'random rooms', we don't mean RANDOM GAMES, we mean rooms full of random players.

A lobby browser would let people who don't post on forums - which, by the way, is nine tenths of the people who play on Live - play games with rulesets they enjoy without needing to populate their friends lists with like-minded nerds. What the fuck is the problem with that?

I didn't think I was being particularly obtuse, to be honest, but I can explain it to you if you like.

If people want to join ROOMS OF RANDOM PEOPLE where they are not able to chose gametype/map etc, I see little distinction between whether the gametype/map is chosen by the game or by the host. Sure, they could ask the host to pick a particular thing, but most people won't, and, the Halo community being what it is, such requests are as likely to be met with abuse as they are to be accomodated. Indeed, it would often be the case that the veto system would give people more choice about what games they play than searchable customs.

I've played quite a few shooters on Live, and it's pretty obvious once you have done that matchmaking affects the game on a fundamental level. Halo works best in teams of people who talk to each other and know how to play together. Several other shooters would also flourish under such conditions, but in none of them is the game actually played properly in that way very often. Halo is played like that and it happens as a direct result of the way matchmaking is implemented. Being able to enter games as a team allows the game to be played properly. Try playing something like Gears of War or Xbox Counterstrike and it's immediately obvious that, whilst ostensibly team games, the way they are played is closer to a free for all than one which involves genuine teamwork.

I've played a fair bit with people who generally just played Halo 2. Whenever we play something else, people ask why this game doesn't have matchmaking, and bemoan the fact that we can't just play a game as a team against some other people. The reason no other games have it is because their online populations aren't big enough. The more people are in matchmaking the better it works, you can get matched faster, with better connections and with people of closer skill level. Anything that dilutes that wonderful online experience should be resisted.

Sticktacular was literally better than pretty much anything ever. You mong.

Yes 100%. No idea why people would want to play in random rooms with these mental rules that take time to understand and 87.6% of the time are poorly thought up game modes.

I refer you to the right honourable dizogg

It was bullshit.

and it was. In fact that's the game I had in mind when making my original comment.

Customs don't have to equal gametypes with weird rules. i just want to play some CTF Classic to 5 captures with Flag At Home To Score.

i can't believe that everyone also seems to associate custom games with newcomers.

Eventually, that will be exactly where the MLG crowd will call their home, so they can tailor their ruleset and set up matches between the top clans and that. You'll see.

That was a built-in gametype though wasn't it? It'll probably feature in matchmaking.

It was built in but on Halo 2 there were built in gametypes that didn't come up in matchmaking. Also, because of how it works, it's better to play with your mates despite it being a single player gametype so it would have to be in a rumble list, which I rarely play.

We tweaked the rules too ^_^

Yeah, and those MLG games were rubbish as well. I can't believe they set up a whole playlist to cater for those boring cunts.

"Boohoo, we don't like radars or SMGs!"

Don't play Halo 2 then you cunts.

Not to mention that it only works with about 5 players max. With 8 its just too hectic

In the new EGM there's a huge Halo 3 feature. Among other things they talk about co-op, and reveal they haven't got it working online yet :/ Whether it makes it in or not, split-screen and system link are still a go. They also say downloadable content may well add it later anyway. Apparently in co-op one player plays as MC, and the other the Arb. Although oddly, there seems to be hints 4 player may be in there too...

What the fuck? How hard can it be? Shitloads of games have done it to near perfection over the last few years, and Bungie are supposedly a highly talented dev team.

I call bullshit.

Check out the article. They say the reason is 'cos in Halo's open world, you can quite easily have someone miles away from his buddy, and that's proving hard to code in terms of lag and performance. It's not like Gears where you are always within 10 meters of each other.

But either way, they are still working on it so fingers crossed.

Ton of awesome information.

:)

:o:P:lol:

*Explodes*

"There's an encounter at the end of the second mission that you play that has more enemies and allies in it than the entire first mission of Halo...and that's not even the biggest encouter in the game"

If that's factually correct, then that deserves another

Tried to read it, but reading the blurry text was making me feel ill. Terrible quality scans/photos, it still baffles me how hard some people find it to take a picture without it turning out looking like a caffeined-up Parkinson's sufferer was holding the camera.

However, from what I could gain, there's an incredible amount of new features which come as a complete suprise to me. Would never have guessed that there were three more new vehicles and more new weapons being added into the mix. Still no word on the Shadow though! Strange.

i've been asuming the 2 player co-op would be online and hoping for a 4 player online. Serves me right for asuming.

Shit, I HOPE they can get 2 player co-op online in, that was my most look forwarded to feature.

:)
